Granit Xhaka is on the verge of signing a new long-term contract at Arsenal after rumours convinced all of us that he was on his way out.

The Swiss international has had his fair share of problems at the Emirates over the years. Right from his form taking a hit to having an outburst against the home supporters, he has gone through a lot, but Xhaka has bounced back every single time, which is very admirable.

However, a move away from Arsenal this summer made sense to all parties. He’ll soon turn 29, he has under two years left on his contract and with the Gunners in need of money through sales, moving him on seemed like a good idea.

Roma did everything they possibly could to sign him this summer, but they couldn’t match Edu’s asking price. As a result, Arsenal ended negotiations with the Italians and decided to offer Xhaka a new deal to keep him at the club.

How agent secured a new Arsenal contract for Xhaka

Swiss journalist Andreas Boni, Blick Sport’s Deputy Editor-in-Chief, spoke about Xhaka’s new deal yesterday. He has claimed that the Swiss international’s agent made a ‘clever move’, which forced the Gunners to give him a good pay-rise and extend his deal.

He said on Blick: “You have to put yourself in his shoes. He’s 29, has two years left on his contract at Arsenal. Then, Roma comes along, gives him a five-year contract, and Jose Mourinho tells him all day long what a great guy he is.

“Then came his adviser and used that cleverly. Xhaka’s adviser, Jose Nogueira, clearly laid the situation out. Arsenal came to study it because Granit has a very high standing in the club, although he had a lot of drama with the fans.

“The result: Granit signed for four years, much better paid than before; a clever move.”

It’s an agent’s job to take advantage of circumstances and Xhaka’s representative did exactly that.

He understood that Roma couldn’t afford him and also noticed that Arsenal were struggling to find a new central midfielder. So, he went to Edu and Arteta, worked his magic and got his client a new, improved contract. We must say, well done!
