Martin Keown has claimed that he would’ve liked former Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard at Arsenal.

The Gunners splashed big money on Ben White last month, but Friday’s result against Brentford showed we may still need another central defender.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Vestergaard was on the market this summer and Keown feels he would’ve been a great signing for Arsenal. However, Leicester City jumped ahead of everyone and completed a £15 million deal to sign the 6ft 6in Danish defender. (Mail)

Keown: I would’ve liked Vestergaard at Arsenal

Asked about the Saints selling Vestergaard, Keown said on TalkSport (Friday, 11.20 am): “Stunned by that. I really can’t believe it. To go for £15 million…

“He’s rock-solid, passes it beautifully, he’s one of the first names on the team-sheet, strong, a real man in the team. They’re (Southampton) not in a good shape and now they’re getting rid of one of their best players.

“(Vestergaard) is definitely a player I’d have liked at Arsenal. That’s really good business, £15 million. That’s a giveaway.”

Vestergaard at Arsenal?

The Dane is really underrated. Vestergaard is good with the ball, is comfortable on both feet, is absolutely fantastic in the air, and at 29, he is in the absolute prime of his professional career.

At just £15 million, Leicester have snapped up a fantastic player, but he was never really an option for Arsenal.

Our new signings Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Ben White are all under the age of 24. Almost all the players we’ve been linked with are also of a similar age group, which just shows that we were never even going to look at someone like Vestergaard, even though he’s a fantastic defender.
