'Loyalty is hard to come by': Mesut Ozil hits out at Arsenal after PL snub

The Mesut Ozil saga at Arsenal looks like it’s not going to end any time soon. Mikel Arteta has left the German out of his Premier League and Europa League squads for the first half of this season, and that has upset many fans across the world.

The former Real Madrid man is technically our best player. Ozil’s vision and ability to pick a pass is up there with the very best players of this generation. The World Cup winner would have been a very good option for us considering that we are struggling for creativity in the final third of the pitch.

However, for reasons unknown, Arteta no longer deems him necessary, and that has ‘deeply disappointed’ the German. Ozil released a statement on Twitter today where he slammed the club’s treatment of him since after the lockdown.

Ozil’s statement

He said: “This is a difficult message to write to the Arsenal fans that I’ve played for over the past few years. I’m really deeply disappointed by the fact that I have not been registered for the Premier League season for the time being. Upon signing my new contract in 2018, I pledged my loyalty and allegiance to the club that I love, Arsenal, and it saddens me that this has not been reciprocated.”

“As I have just found out, loyalty is hard to come by nowadays. I’ve always tried to remain positive from week to week that there’s maybe a chance to get back in the squad soon again. That’s why I kept silent so far. Before the coronavirus break, I was really happy with the development under our new coach, Mikel Arteta – we’ve been on a positive way and I would say my performances were on a really good level.”

“But then, things changed, again, and I was no longer allowed to play football for Arsenal. What else can I say? London still feels like home, I still have many good friends in this team, and I still feel a strong connection with fans of this club. No matter what, I will keep fighting for my chance and not let my eighth season at Arsenal end like this.”

“I can promise you that this hard decision won’t change anything in my mindset – I will continue to train as best as I can and wherever possible use my voice against inhumanity and for justice.”

Arsenal owe an explanation to the fans

The situation has now become irreparable. Arsenal clearly want Ozil gone and the club have shown that they are prepared to keep him away from the side to achieve that. However, the German seems to be adamant that he will see out of his contract, even if it means that he won’t play for us ever again.

As Arsene Wenger claimed recently, not playing a player of Ozil’s quality is a waste. The reasons behind his omission from the squad are clearly not football related which makes it a real shame for the player as well as the fans who have been given no explanation about the situation whatsoever.
