Olympic gold medalist and Arsenal fan Mo Farah has backed Mikel Arteta to go on and emulate legendary Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Arteta has been at the end of some serious criticism over the last week. Arsenal crashed out of the Europa League to Unai Emery’s Villarreal and a section of our fan base called for his head immediately after the game.

A week after that result, Arsenal have won back to back games in the Premier League including a first victory at Chelsea in 17 years. That has calmed a few supporters down, but the question marks are still there.

However, Farah believes that Arteta has what it takes to succeed. He feels that the Arsenal boss is heading in the same direction as Ferguson, who won absolutely everything during his time at Old Trafford.

Mo Farah: Mikel Arteta can emulate Sir Alex Ferguson

Farah said on Presenting: “Mikel Arteta – I’ve met Mikel at the training ground at Arsenal. I think he’s a great human being. He has a lot of experience from Manchester City, played for Arsenal in the FA Cup, now won the FA Cup for Arsenal.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for him. His coaching is about understanding other players and he’s starting to understand them and respecting them and they’re respecting him.

“I can see him going further and further and who knows, he could be maybe like Alex Ferguson in what he did and I think it’s the same as you look back at Alex Ferguson and what he did with Manchester United, he controlled that team. I think he’s (Arteta) is going towards understanding a player and controlling them and letting them enjoy their game.”

The Insider’s View:

If Arteta can even achieve half of what Ferguson did at Manchester United, he will go down as an Arsenal great. However, he is still a long way off even being mentioned in the same breath as the legendary Scotsman.

Reports have claimed that the Gunners hierarchy will give Arteta more time to succeed. He will not be sacked this season, which just shows that they still trust him to get the club back to where it belongs.

However, we need our owners to trust him with transfer funds this summer, not just words. Arteta should be given all the resources he needs to succeed, but knowing how the Kroenkes have been over the years, Arsenal fans shouldn’t really get their hopes up.
