Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has sent a message to Edu Gaspar and Mikel Arteta about the Gunners’ recruitment policy ahead of potential signings in this transfer window.
The money Arsenal have invested in transfers in recent years is nothing compared to clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City, but we can’t really say that we’ve had no money to spend, can we?
Since Arsene Wenger left, Arsenal have spent a staggering £293 million on new signings. That is a lot of money, but we’ve only gone backwards with respect our league finishes in the same period.
Something’s not right here and Petit believes that Arsenal’s recruitment team is at fault. He has claimed that the ‘profile of some of our current players is all wrong’, and he has begged Edu and Arteta to not repeat the same mistakes again this summer.
Emmanuel Petit: I don’t recognise Arsenal anymore
He told The Online Gooner: “I don’t recognise this club anymore. They are at the end of the street. Please, please stop making mistakes in the transfer market. The profile of some of our current players is all wrong.
“Please, please, please stop, this is my only request.
“Arsenal need to renew the contact with their blood, with their history. We used to take so much pleasure on the pitch and I don’t believe they have that feeling of pleasure anymore because they don’t play the football they should.
“We need to get proper players out wide that can make a difference – that have the personality and character to take on one, two, three defenders. We need personality in midfield and defence. We miss characters like Tony Adams”
The Insider’s View:
If Arsenal earned a penny every time someone claimed that we need another player like Tony Adams, we’d have enough money to buy Kylian Mbappe now. Sadly, it doesn’t work that way.
Arsenal’s recruitment in recent years really has been questionable. One can surely make an argument that our signings over the last few years is the reason why we’ve fallen so far down in the Premier League table.
However, a lot of other factors have played a big part as well. There has been a ton of changes at the club over the last two years and that, combined with impact of the pandemic, has made things extremely difficult for Arsenal.
That, however, is no excuse for our poor recruitment. Signing someone like Willian last summer is a big example of how poor our transfer strategy has been at times. Edu and Arteta simply cannot make mistakes like that one again in the coming weeks. If they do, we can kiss our chances of any success next season goodbye.
