Speaking on the All to Play for podcast, former Premier League stars Joe Cole and Jermaine Pennant have slammed Mikel Arteta for his decision to leave Mesut Ozil out of his squad.

The Gunners boss has been clear that the German playmaker is not in his plans. Ozil is not a part of the Premier League or the Europa League squads, and with a little over six months left on his contract, it looks like his Arsenal career is over.

Arteta’s decision has divided the opinion among Arsenal supporters. Some feel that he is right to leave the former Real Madrid man out, while many others think our creativity problems would not exist if Ozil was a part of the squad.

Leaving Ozil out is ‘a crime on football

Pennant and Cole truly believe that Arteta has made a huge mistake by leaving Ozil out. The duo slammed the Arsenal boss, with latter calling his decision ‘a crime on football’.

“Arsenal last year were spearheaded by Aubameyang, they had more creativity but what they were lacking was defensive, Pennant said.

“Now that they’ve sorted out their defence, I think they’ve taken away their creativity. Aubameyang isn’t scoring his goals like he was last season. You’ve got Mesut Ozil, which to me if you’ve got no creativity in your team, that’s what he does. It’s a sin.”

Cole backed the former Arsenal man’s assessment of the situation: “It is a sin, it’s a crime on football.”

The Ozil saga at Arsenal will go on as long as the German is at the club. He has divided opinion ever since he stepped foot at Arsenal, and he will continue to do so for the next six months.

Would Ozil solve Arsenal’s creativity issues? Yes. However, Arteta won the FA Cup and the Community Shield without him, and it’s only right that we trust our boss’ decision despite the poor run we’re currently on.
