Arsenal legend Ian Wright spoke to Premier League Productions on the aftermath of his former side’s defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.
The Gunners went into the game with confidence after winning their last two games against the Premier League champions. Liverpool, however, showed their class and were comfortably the better side as they picked up all three points against us.
Wright was frustrated with Arsenal’s performance at Anfield. We were two deep in our own half, and on the rare occasion when we managed to beat Liverpool’s press, we lacked the creativity in midfield to feed our front three.
Arsenal have been on the transfer market to solve that very issue, and Wright has urged Mikel Arteta to bring in one of his reported priority targets.
Wright wants Aouar at Arsenal
He told Premier League Productions via Goal: “It felt like a training game for Liverpool in respect of Arsenal were saying you can try and get out but we will press you. You can see that in Liverpool’s team everyone can move forward because Arsenal were starting so deep. But what was evident to me was that we didn’t have that person in midfield who was comfortable enough on the ball until Ceballos came on.”
“[They need] someone who they can pass the ball to, who is comfortable to receive it with someone on his back, who can pop it off, who can turn it around the corner. From there Arsenal can play but we can’t do that at the moment. That’s why it’s imperative we get Aouar from Lyon. He’s someone that can get on the ball and get the forwards going. You saw the chances that Ceballos made when he came on, that’s what Arsenal need.”
RMC Sport reported last week that Arsenal had tabled a £32 million for Lyon’s Houssem Aouar. The Frenchman is reportedly Arteta’s priority target in this window, and there is confidence in and around the Emirates that a deal can be completed soon.
Aouar would be a massive signing for us. The Frenchman fills the void we currently have in central midfield, and once he adjusts to the league, he has the quality to be an exceptional player for us.
Lyon are playing hardball over a potential deal. However, with an improved offer in the coming days, Arsenal should be able to wrap up the deal to sign Aouar before the window closes next week.
