Former Manchester United star and Premier League legend Paul Scholes has had his say on Daniel Ek’s reported interest in buying Arsenal.

The Swedish billionaire, the founder of Spotify, has made it clear that he is very serious about buying the club. He claims that he has secured all the funds required and has urged Stan Kroenke to consider his ‘compelling offer’. (Read here)

The Kroenkes have categorically claimed that they will not entertain any offers for Arsenal. That has dampened the mood, but there still is some optimism that Ek can work his magic and takeover the club in the coming weeks.

However, Scholes doesn’t really believe that Ek will change anything at Arsenal. He has claimed that the Swede is only in it for the money, just like all the other owners are, which according to him is ‘the same old trick’.

He told BT Sport during their coverage of the Europa League games yesterday: “It’s the same thing. I don’t think Arsenal fans should celebrate. He’s getting interest by mentioning [Dennis] Bergkamp, [Patrick] Vieira, [Thierry] Henry, it’s the same old trick, it won’t be any different.

“You’ll just be a toy. He’s a money man, he’s a businessman, he wants to make money. This is what they’ll do. They will come to clubs like this, go to clubs like Arsenal and make lots of money.”

The Insider’s View:

The lack of understanding of some of these pundits really is baffling. Don’t get us wrong, Scholes has a point here, but some of his comments imply that an investor should only put in billions and not expect to take a penny back.

That’s not how business works, does it? If a businessman like Ek puts in £2 billion of his hard-earned money, he will view it as an investment and expect some kind of return. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

The only change we Arsenal fans are looking for is to have an owner who actually cares about the club and its ambitions. Stan Kroenke isn’t bothered about our success on the pitch, but it looks like Ek is, and that is his biggest selling point.

Scholes could well be proved right. Ek could turn out to be just like the Kroenkes, but at this moment in time, the Swede is our only hope of getting rid of Silent Stan and co, and that is why all Arsenal fans are backing him.
