Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has shared what Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told Martin Odegaard that convinced him to move to the Emirates.

The Gunners announced yesterday that the Norway international had joined the club on loan until the end of the season. Edu and Arteta worked really hard to lure him in, and his signing could make a massive difference this season.

Odegaard was very close to returning to Real Sociedad on loan. The Real Madrid man spent last season there and he was a star. Another spell in familiar surroundings would have been tempting, but a conversation with Arteta on the phone changed everything.

Romano said: “He (Odegaard) was really one step away from joining Sociedad and then Arsenal called him.”

“Arteta told him, ‘you can have some space, game time, new league. Joining the Premier League can also change your value, you can prove your skills in a top league as the Premier League’.”

“‘You will be playing for an important club with important players close to you. It’s better than going to Real Sociedad where you’ve been a star. But it’s a different league’.”

“‘Going back to your old club would be something not so good for the player, like saying I can be a star only at Real Sociedad’, Arteta told him this kind of thing and Odegaard was so happy.”

Arteta making the difference yet again

A lot was said when Arsenal appointed Arteta – he will struggle because of his lack of experience and he doesn’t have the pull that someone like Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola possess to bring in top players.

The Arsenal boss has proved everyone wrong.

Arteta played a massive role in bringing Thomas Partey to Arsenal in the summer. He played a big part in convincing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to stay as well, and now, he has lured Odegaard in.

The Spaniard deserves a ton of credit for everything he has done since he took over. He now has to get the best out of Odegaard, and if he can do that, we will almost certainly finish this season on a high.
