Wilshere says Arsenal player labelled 'bang average' is the 'toughest' he's played against

Every Arsenal player who featured yesterday came under some serious criticism from fans, pundits and the media. The Gunners were simply not good enough, and Villarreal deservedly went through at our expense.

Of all the players who received criticism last night, Thomas Partey arguably got most of it. The Ghanaian has had a difficult debut season in the Premier League, and his performance last night summed his campaign up.

He looked nothing like the player we all saw at Atletico Madrid and pundits have been extremely critical of him. One such pundit is ESPN’s Steve Nicol.

The former Liverpool man labelled Partey as ‘bang average’ after his performance last night. He accused the Ghanaian of having ‘no guts’ and ‘no drive’, which really is a bit harsh, even though he was really poor yesterday.

Arsenal fans are not happy with Partey’s performance either. The Ghanaian received a ton of stick on social media last night, but an ex-Gooner who has played against him has jumped into his defence.

Jack Wilshere said on TalkSport today: “They’re good players. Thomas Partey is a top, top player. I played against him in the semi-final of the Europa League and he was one of the toughest I played against.”

The Insider’s View:

Thomas Partey has had a shocking debut campaign at the Emirates. He has shown his class in flashes, but he has lacked consistency. Injuries have played a huge part, but he has been fit for a while now, and last night’s display was simply not good enough.

However, that does not make Partey a bad player. He is still one of the best midfielders in the country, and with time and some support from the players around him, he will turn out to be the player we all hoped he’d be.

Arsenal have to bring in a player who would complement Partey in the middle of the park. We have nobody at the moment who is a perfect fit for the Ghanaian, and that is one of the biggest reasons why he has struggled.
