Despite signing Viktor Gyokeres last year, Arsenal are still in the market for a new striker this summer.

Julian Alvarez has been linked to Arsenal, while Inter Milan’s Pio Esposito is an Arsenal target too.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United want to sign Esposito, and they are ready to make a serious play on this deal.

Indeed, speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano notes that Newcastle are ready to make a ‘serious bid’ for Esposito, claiming that the Magpies are planning to sign a top striker this summer after Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa have struggled to live up to expectations.

Romano shared an update on Esposito amid links with a Premier League move.

The journalist says Arsenal haven’t actually started to move on this deal yet, but Newcastle are waiting in the wings and ready to offer big money to get this one done.

“Arsenal haven’t started an Esposito deal. One club that would be ready, from what I understand, to make a serious bid for Esposito in terms of financial terms is Newcastle,” Romano said.

“Newcastle are planning to sign a top striker in the summer, more likely Esposito, he’s one of the names that have already been circulating within the club, he’s highly regarded by Newcastle.”

Pio Esposito’s stats this season

Newcastle are ready to spend big money on Esposito, and, in doing so, they may actually help Arsenal dodge something of a transfer bullet.

Indeed, while Esposito looks a promising talent, he’s far from what the Gunners need right now.

This is an Arsenal team that is ready to dominate – not one that needs to take on any more ‘project’ players.

A look at Esposito’s stats this season show that he’s simply not at the level right now.

Four league goals this season hardly screams ‘big-money move’ and Arsenal would be better off going for a player like Julian Alvarez who is proven at the very top level.
