‘Outstanding’ Newcastle player could now help Arsenal sign Eberechi Eze

Arsenal still want to sign Eberechi Eze this summer, despite already adding six players to Mikel Arteta’s ranks.

The Gunners have been busy in this transfer window, bolstering several areas of their squad by spending big.

Viktor Gyokeres arrives from Sporting CP as the marquee addition, while the likes of Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke and Christian Norgaard have also joined the North Londoners.

However, Arteta and Andrea Berta feel they still need one more addition to complete their squad, and appear to have identified Eze as the man to fill this final piece of the jigsaw.

Arsenal are using Anthony Elanga to try and sign Eberechi Eze on a cheap deal

Arsenal aren’t satisfied with what they have and are eager to further strengthen Arteta’s squad.

The left-hand side of their attack was an issue last season, and the Gunners are convinced that they can find an upgrade on Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli.

Eze can be brought in if one of these two players leave, and it appears increasingly likely that Trossard may be on his way out, with interest from Borussia Dortmund emerging in recent days.

Arsenal can also land Eze if Crystal Palace are willing to accept an offer lower than his reported £68 million release clause, which expired at the end of July.

According to Ben Jacobs, the Gunners are looking to use Anthony Elanga’s recent £55 million switch to Newcastle as a marker in their negotiations with Palace for Eze.

“I think Arsenal are looking at Anthony Elanga, who moved, of course, to Newcastle from Nottingham Forest, and because Eze only has two years left on his deal, they think £55 million could be competitive should they choose to sell,” Jacobs told talkSPORT.

If Arsenal are able to negotiate a fee worth £55 million for Eze, then they’ll have certainly done excellently, and can consider the 27-year-old an astute piece of business.

Arsenal are right to use Anthony Elanga transfer as precedent for Eberechi Eze

Eze is a better player than Elanga, offering a wider range of skills than the new Newcastle signing.

That said, the Swede is four years younger than Eze and wasn’t in the same contractual situation as the Palace talisman.

For these reasons, Arsenal are right to use Elanga’s price tag as a precedent for negotiations over Eze.

Elanga, who has been described as ‘outstanding’ by football analyst Ben Mattinson, may have boasted similar output on the surface to Eze last season, but the underlying numbers suggest a different story.

The England international takes more shots, completes more take-ons and accumulates more expected goals and assists per 90 minutes than his Swedish counterpart.

That said, Arsenal can utilise the surface-level statistics as leverage, comparing the two players directly in their negotiations.
