According to a report from Sky Sports Germany, Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka fancies a return to the Bundesliga in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Swiss international joined us back in 2016 and has played over 200 games for us in all competitions. He has been a part of some controversy, but you would be lying if you don’t think he has been mostly brilliant under Mikel Arteta.
My Revenge On Ben Foster
Xhaka played a huge part in helping us win the FA Cup last season. He, like most other Arsenal players, had a bad start to this campaign, but he turned it around as he always does.
The Swiss international has been so good since Boxing Day that he has played every single game in every competition since that game against Chelsea. That shows that Arteta, who labelled him as ‘phenomenal’, really trusts him, but Xhaka still wants out.
The report claims that Hertha Berlin, who were heavily linked with a move for Xhaka in January last year, are still keen. They would be open to signing him and the Arsenal midfielder fancies a move as well.
Arsenal may have to depend on player sales to raise funds this summer – especially if we drop out of Europe. However, there are plenty of players who we should cash-in on before we even consider selling Xhaka.
The Insider’s View:
There is a good chance Arsenal will try to bolster a number of areas in the squad this summer. We are clearly short in central midfield already and selling Xhaka makes absolutely no sense at all – unless we receive an outrageous offer for him.
However, if Xhaka himself is pushing for a move away, there’s no point in forcing him to stay. Arsenal should try to get as much money as possible for the Swiss international and use that to bring in a top-quality replacement.
Yves Bissouma would be many fans’ number one choice to replace Xhaka, and the Brighton man would certainly be a magnificent signing in the upcoming summer transfer window.
