90Min made a shock claim earlier this month that Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had spoken to Mikel Arteta, Edu and co about signing his compatriot Aaron Boupendza.

The 24-year-old attacker, who only joined Turkish side Hatayspor last summer, is having a splendid season. He has scored 18 goals in the Super Lig so far this term, and he showed his prowess in Gabon’s colours as well.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Boupendza started on the left yesterday against Conga and he scored a stunner just before half-time to give Gabon the lead. Have a look at his goal from last night – exactly 10 days after Aubameyang reportedly recommended him to Arsenal.

Boupendza is certainly making a very good name for himself. His goal record in Turkey is absolutely phenomenal this season, and if he can keep that up, he will soon find himself at a bigger club.

The report claimed that along with Arsenal, Premier League rivals Tottenham, Leicester, West Ham, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Wolves are all monitoring the Gabon attacker’s progress.

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, more clubs may well join the race to sign Boupendza, but should Arsenal be one of them?

The Insider’s View:

Aubameyang has watched his compatriot closely for a while now. The Arsenal skipper was just a few feet away from Boupendza yesterday when he smashed his goal in from a very difficult angle.

If the rumours about Auba recommending the 24-year-old to Arsenal are true, there will surely be more positive words after what happened last night. Arsenal may well have a look at him, but a deal is unlikely.

This is his first season in the top-flight of any league he has ever been in, and nobody knows how he will fare if he makes his way to England – the toughest league in world football.

Auba’s recommendation is huge but he will need a lot more than just that. If he can finish the season in a strong fashion, he may well end up on our shortlist, but it is very hard to imagine us going through with the deal this summer.
