Chelsea Give Us The Blues!!

Wallop! That was an exceedingly unpleasant crash-landing yesterday afternoon at the Grove. Like most in the Gooner Nation I’m still smarting from the very large and possibly fatal hole the Chelsea arrivistes (as Arsčne would say) have put in the side of our Premier League ambitions.

The first goal we can put down to our continued defensive frailties. The cross should have been cut out and Didier Drogba shouldn’t have been allowed to get between William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen. The second goal just before the break was one of those things. The last goal which really rubbed salt in the wound was a well-taken free kick. If I never see Didier Drogba again it will be too soon. You have to give credit where credit is due. He’s an excellent, complete forward. As a man and as a player he is deeply unattractive though, which makes his constant successes all the more hard to bear.

The final scoreline flattered Chelsea a little. It’s also hard to see what was wrong with our “goal” which was disallowed. That MIGHT have changed the course of the game. We also matched Chelsea blow for blow for much of the first half, and put a fair amount of pressure on them after half-time. Our old Achilles Heel of too much possession and not enough cutting edge came back to haunt us. We’re certainly missing Robin van Persie as much as I feared we might. One man doesn’t make a team but his excellent form up until his horrible injury on international duty has been fundamental to our resurgence as a goal-scoring force this season.

Much as we had our fair share of possession in the first half we lacked a cutting edge. Chelsea – who have reverted to a sort of Rolls Royce version of us under George Graham as they were under José Mourinho under the leadership of Carlo Ancelotti – have the experience and ruthless edge that we still lack. I still think we’re continuing to improve and are a better side than last season. It’s still early in the League campaign but the competition is now Chelsea’s to lose. All we can do is pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and keep on trying to pick up results.

I heard a lot of comments after the game yesterday about us needing to flash the cash in the January transfer window. Whilst I think we still need reinforcements I’m not so sure about this. It’s often difficult to get the players you want in the winter window. I wouldn’t spend unless it’s on a player who will add something to the team. We have to show continued patience I think. All the objective evidence points to the benefits of patience and stability.

Most of the first team will of course be rested for our visit to the City of Manchester Stadium on Wednesday night for our Carling Cup quarter-final tie against Manchester City. This is going to be a VERY difficult tie to win, especially away from home. Citeh battered Scunthorpe United in the last round, putting out pretty much their first-choice eleven. I expect them to do the same on Wednesday. If we’re in the draw for the semi-final we’ll definitely have earned it.

On another depressing note I hope that the club and the police can catch the zit who lobbed something at Frank Lampard whilst he was setting up to take a corner in the north-east corner lower tier yesterday afternoon. I couldn’t see what it was clearly. Whatever it was, lobbing stuff on the park simply isn’t on. It looked to me like it might have been a mobile phone but reports suggest it was possibly a camera. I also saw something thrown out of the north lower as Chelsea celebrated their second goal just before half-time yesterday. Putting that together with the objects thrown at United players in the Champions League semi-final second leg at the Grove last season I’m hoping we haven’t got the start of a worrying trend. Assuming the culprits can be identified I want them up the steps at the Magistrates’ Court.

I understand how emotional we all get at the game. There is NEVER any excuse for missile-throwing however. NEVER. We’re better than that. We’re The Arsenal. If you can’t show the class I expect from the club and its supporters I don’t want to be associated with you in any way. Stewards often get it in ear for being over-officious and oppressive. Some of this criticism is correct. I don’t like Day-glow Jobsworths either. On the other hand they sometimes get a dog’s abuse simply for doing their job. That’s not on either. There are ways to protest against unfair treatment. Gobbing at stewards or verbally abusing them isn’t one of them. On that note let me compliment the steward who caught somebody supping a pint in the stands at half-time yesterday. He politely pointed out that drinking alcohol in the stands wasn’t permitted and he’d have to return to the concourse to finish his pint. Well played to the steward. Sensible and proportionate. Problem solved.

I happen to think that the regulation prohibiting the consumption of alcohol whilst in sight of the pitch is yet another unjustified indignity that we have to suffer as football supporters. Why can I sup and watch play at rugby union, rugby league, cricket and so on but not football. I know we have problems with irresponsible drinking as a society but why should I be penalised because some people don’t know when to stop? As it happens with the foul, bilious swills they sell at the Grove and the ludicrous prices charged I wouldn’t choose to sup and watch the game even if I could. I wouldn’t foist either John Smith’s or Foster’s on Spurs fans. We should however have the right so to do if we wish. Whilst the regulations exist the stewards are obliged to enforce them though. The over-the-top way that is done at some grounds is completely disproportionate, so “well-played” to the steward I witnessed yesterday.

Keep the faith!

Arsenal u akhbar!

I have never had such sleepless nights in a while. The pain just refuses to go away. All I can say is should Wenger fail to get in a new player(man and not child) come January, he deserves a sack for what feels like another trophyless season in the making. I’d rather we fought and remained trophyless than not even giving a fight at all.

    Hi Vic,

When a team is not used to keeping clean sheets (like us) then the kind of results that went against us yesterday is likely to happen.

Yesterday’s clean sheet by Chelski was their ninth obtained in fourteen Premiership games. An absolutely outstanding record IMO. Whereas we have only kept three clean sheets in thirteen Premiership games. Not good enough if we wish to challenge for the EPL.

Defensively as a team, we’re a joke at the moment. We have central defenders in Gallas and Vermaelen who like to bomb upfield at every opportunity, the likes of Nasri and Arshavin don’t offer enough protection to our full backs and we are lacking someone at the top who can defend from the front (i.e. Van Persie and Bendtner) because the likes of Eduardo, Vela and Walcott simply cannot provide a physical presence up front.

Wenger really needs to work on our defensive strategy and curb the attacking of our backline and urge them to concentrate on their normal jobs, which is to provide defensive stability for the team. We have the likes of Fabregas, Nasri, Denilson, Eduardo and Arshavin who can provide offensive opportunities for the team.

I know that as a team, we failed to function yesterday, but Walcott offered the team absolutely nothing when he came on. It’s surprising to see the amount of abuse that the likes of Diaby, Song, Eboue and Denilson have received from many Arsenal supporters, yet Walcott’s efforts have been ignored. He constantly loses the ball, he is always on the edge of games and he gets brushed off the ball far too easily for my liking. At least the aforementioned players have improved their games unlike Walcott.

I still have faith in this team, but they must improve on the defensive aspects of their play, otherwise we will come up short once again this season.

P.S new goalkeeper and a physical forward is an absolute MUST in the transfer window.

First of let me tell you I am hardcore chelsea fan. But I like arsenal for the way they play. It is possible only because of Arsene Wenger. The only flaw in this man is that he does not accept when he is wrong. If he buys some good players in Jan for his defense then Arsenal are good enough to challenge the title. These kids are gonna be great in future. Give them time and encouragement. If anything learn from Liverpool fans.Chelsea time last year at this time was in a very bad position with the same set of players. Now don’t tell me Arsene is as bad as Scolari. With the same set of players Guus Hiddink won FA cup and look at chelsea now. So all needs Arsene needs is to look at his approach and change it coz times have changed. These set of players are very very good. So please be patient and make sure no more players are sold.

That pretty much ends whatever belief I had left in this team and AW’s project. Abject abject performance and I won’t even consider any crap excuses about the ref and injuries. Fed up with constant humiliation after humiliation after humiliation season after season after season from Utd and Chelsea. That’s it for me.

We’ve had some humiliating days over the past few years (5-1 defeat against spurs, 4-0 against Utd in the FA Cup, the CL semis last year, losing 4-1 to Chelsea last year to name just a few) but yesterday was a new low. Not the match, but hearing fellow gooners scream for free kicks just because our players were bouncing off their opponents was too much for me to handle. The ultimate humiliation. Our lack of physicality has been mentioned as a problem ever since Paddy V left. It hasn’t been addressed. Yesterday we saw the consequences. Men against boys indeed.

AW’s post-match comments don’t deserve to be dignified with any kind of comment. Apparently not conent with seeing his side utterly humiliated on the pitch, he decided to totally disgrace himself with his comments to try and distract attention away from our performance. I was embarrased for him.

He really is starting to cut quite a tragic figure these days. This team was meant to be his legacy. His final and most glorious contribution to Arsenal football club. A team truly moulded in his own image after years of hard work. As it turns out, it’s by far the worst team of his reign. That must be hard for him to accept. But he must. He brutally dismantled the Invincibles. Hopefully he’ll be as ruthless with this team starting next summer.

Denilson is just not good enogh to play for the Arrsenal, he is too weak for a central midfielder and shows little desire or passion when trying to tackle the opposition as it was clearly evident yesterday. It is because of players like him we havent won anything in 4 years, soon to be five years in a month. And how can you expect to be challenging for silverware when your goalkeeper gets beaten at his near post, not once but also in the cl semi final. Wenger should have broght Chamakh for as little as 7 million what good will he be if we buy him in January when he will be in Africa and ineligible for the Champions League. When Bendtner returms from injury I doubt his ability to be a destructive force infront of goal like RVP. As long as we finish in the top 2 OR 3 and win at the shit hole I wouldnt mind, but its the Champions League and the Fa cup we really need to push for, COME ON U ARSENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!

in my own opinion, wenger needs to put up or shut up with his embarrassing comments this time. we somehow seem to be following a cult led by wenger in some sort of way. fans cannot single out a player to blame; fans and management easily blame the coach for putting out a mediocre eleven. if AW knows he doesn’t have the depth especially in defence, why in the blade doesn’t he invest and reap in future? and you know what, we (and management) all listen to the same old fairy tale from a man of his quality. in a few words, the invincibles were never replaced and that is painfully eating him up endlessly. the nice soccer starts from the midfield and we certainly don’t lack that but we need the defenders “yesterday” and certainly the striker who will hold the ball for you and others to feed on. what happened to the over 20 goals in a season from ljunberg, 20 goals for pires, 30 goals for TH14, 10 goals for PV4, and the sublime passing of DB10? all that was never replaced and in whatever way we start the season, we won’t be up there until more reinforcements in defence are bought. does AW ever see what we see? its a pity we have dropped out of the race at an early date.

    Good post Vic.

Defensively we were poor again. We had the warning signs earlier in the season conceding against poor teams: Pompey, Brum, but it didn’t matter as we could knock in 2 more goals than them.

The back four for me are OK, I think the problem is behind them.

Almunia has instilled a lack of confidence in the centre backs. He does not come for crosses, and flaps regularly. The third goal was a case of poor positioning.

I can’t see what Denilson adds to the defensive midfield. He does not track runners, and gets knocked off the ball. Song has got much better in the role. In addition Cesc has to drop back to help Denilson out so cannot use his guile further up the pitch.

We’re missing Van Persie, and the players that have been given an opportunity haven’t risen to the occasion. Eduardo can’t lead the line. Vela looks a bit lost.

Bendtner is the obvious solution, but why not give Walcott a go at centre forward? He has the pace to trouble any defence.

Despite poor refereeing we were undone by our own poor defending. At the moment without Van Persie we could be looking at a long winter!

wow. some amazing comments here. i understand we’re all gutted, but lets put things in perspective. it wasnt our day. we had most of the possesion first half and made a mistake in allowing drogba too much space between the centre backs. then a freak goal wich you couldnt account for and bang, its all over. chelsea shut up shop and we’re done and dusted. i defy any team in the country to come back from 2 nil against chelsea. aint happening. they are the best defensive unit in the country. but lets not forget we we’re missing both strikers that could lead the line and our two regular left backs as well as diaby, who, whatever you say is a physical presence. yes i know the scoreline isnt great but did you really think that reflected the game? look, wenger could not have forseen the ridiculous injuries we have had and i am sure he will re-inforce in the january window if he has too. he brought arshavin in when needed, didnt he? it went against us this weekend, but we are stronger than last year and for the early part of the season we had a great bench and we’re scoring for fun. arsene has been the key to re-inventing our club and for creating several winning teams. he needs our support now more than ever. the worst thing would be for him to leave. i know we always say this, but the crop of players coming through is amazing and the potential is there. doesnt help when we get done like this, but i still believe that wenger can turn it around. we must get a better keeper though and an additional striker to hold the line. im not a fan of bednter but i’d have taken him yesterday, up front with eduardo. depressing result but we gotta stick by the manager and the club. where we go from here, i dont know, but lets start by smashing stoke

when wenger arrived we had one off our best keepers ever,we had our best defense ever,a very strong midfield and a brilliant attack,he has had the pleasure off working with 95% off the greatest players too ever play for us,some off which he bought,we had a beautiful home where everyone came early and stayed late,we had David Dein and trophys were demanded. thirteen years later we have no keeper,a poor defense,a weak midfield and a light attack, the laziest, gutless, smallest players with no ambition too ever play for us,a glorious stadium were people come late and leave early, something is not right,Arsene Wenger is a great coach,a real hard working lovable man,a very decent man,it would be impossible not too like him,but i think he has lost his way a bit,i personally think it goes back to Dein,i dont know the guy,im not taking sides, but Dein wanted success on the pitch for Arsenal, from what i can see this board want success in the business side off things, they know we are gonna keep coming, keep spending our hard earned money on the club,we are easy and they know it,Arsene has bought into this because he has lost his focus, any man that can say these are the best players he has ever worked with is losing something, its make our break time for the club, are we it this to win or just to balance the books.we deserve to know.

Chelsea don’t dish out easy goals and very rarely make mistakes. We have a habit of making them and it costs us when we play the top teams.

Last year against United in the Champs league: Almunia let a 40 yard free kick in from CR.

Against Chelsea in the FA Cup: Sylvestre bundled out of it by Drogba who scored.

Against Man Utd this year: Almunia took out Rooney unneccesarily.

Against City: Gallas left Adebayor on his own unmarked.

Against Chelsea: Gallas was at fault for first 2 goals. Almunia let in free-kick from Drogba when he was on that side.

If you make mistakes against the top teams you will be punished. we can make them against Blackburn or Portsmouth as we can then outscore them. We cannot do that in the big games.

These mistakes are being made by our most senior players so you cannot pin it on youth.

We need a dominant centre half to play alongside TV5 and we are crying out for a decent goalkeeper, preferably English.

  • Fuck off u spurs

Players like Senderos, silvestre, bentdner, eboue, denilson and out of form eduardo do not win you titles and champions leagues. Again our bench was poor we only had wallcott and rosicky who could have potentially changed the game but compared to the bench of chelsea thay had Ballack, zhirkov, fereira, deco and molouda out strenthing us in every position. Our second choice striker is Vela who is only 20 showing the inexperience and lack of depth in our squad. But theres no point dwelling over this over and over again because the bottom line is wenger wont buy anyone in yhe next transfer window. And if he actually does it will just be a player like Chamakh who would be ineligible to play in the champions league. Until wenger makes drastic changes next summer where not winning the title for some time to come.

The defeat is hard to take but it is the same mistakes that dogged us last year, and the year before and the year before! We can all see where the frailities lie and so can all our rivals.

I respect Wenger for what he has achieved and i hope he continues to lead Arsenal for many years to come. But he needs to not change his approach but tweek it to get the best out of players.

The 4-3-3 we play is nice to watch but is it making best use of the players we have? I saw one comment about Walcott not having the ability. I disagree. I think as with some other players he is not playing his strongest position.

GK i think is definatley up for grabs and none have impressed me so far this year. About time we spent some money on an established international, world class keeper.

BTW, Vic, just exactly HOW are we better than last season?

    Here are the facts:

Our last 3 games against the big clubs at home have resulted in 3-1, 4-1 and 3-0 defeats.

End of November 2008: Played 15, Won 8, Drawn 2, Lost 5, conceded 19 goals

End of November 2009: Played 13, Won 8, Drawn 1, Lost 4, conceded 18 goals
