Sad that we treat FA Cup with such contempt

soldier_sol
By STUART WATSON - Since my last words were spoken on this website, we’ve gone top of the league, been knocked back off it, seen Sol Campbell make his second debut for the club and been dumped out of the F.A Cup away at Stoke.

The F.A Cup defeat has sparked some argument within Arsenal fans, as to whether Arsene Wenger was right to field a weakened side to give first team players a rest ahead of a tough Premier League schedule which sees us play Aston Villa, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool in succession.

Some fans including myself are bitterly disappointed that the F.A Cup is being treated in this way.  I acknowledge that the cup is not what it used to be when it was the pinnacle of the season and unfortunately times have moved on with the need to either qualify for a European spot or stay in the league a much higher priority these days.

It is however sad that clubs would rather throw out a virtual reserve side with an attitude that says “if we get through with this side then great, but if we get knocked out then no big deal”

Sundays match didn’t just feature reserve players, it featured players that many Arsenal fans hadn’t heard of before and some others such as Fabianski and Silvestre that just aren’t up to scratch at the club.

In an age where some players are on more money per week than many people earn in 10 years and have the bodies of  athletes is it really that difficult to ask them to play twice in a week.

If the game against Aston Villa is of such high importance (which I believe it is) then why risk injury to Cesc Fabregas and Denilson by playing them three days before the game at Villa Park?

Another point that was raised by a friend of mine who is an Away Season Ticket member is that should Arsenal drop the rule for supporters on the scheme to automatically pay for away F.A Cup tickets like is done with the League Cup.

I wonder what many of the 5,000 fans who travelled up to the Potteries on Sunday thought of the side when it was announced.  I’m sure we all expected the odd change here and there, but the side that came out was misshaped and sub-standard.

Similarly I think Arsenal should take the route of doing the same with home season tickets, how many people would have been happy to see us stick out the reserves in a replay against Stoke City and then be charged £35 at minimum for the privilege?   I already know of several silver members who now don’t bother buying tickets for home F.A Cup ties as they know the team won’t be full strength.

Lots of Arsenal fans are screaming out for silverware, and I don’t know how long some of the more top players will stick around for if we keep throwing all our eggs into the Champions League basket with limited success, perhaps an F.A Cup success would rejuvenate the club and pave the way to more success.

On a more positive note we have now arrived at the make or break point for the club this season with the run of games mentioned above that will either see us mount a real title challenge or fight it out with teams like Villa and Spurs for the fourth Champions League berth.

Its absolutely imperative that we get three points tomorrow night, and I think a draw at worst is what we need from the home game against Manchester United on Sunday.

I can actually see us beating United well, they have been poor (by their standards) away from home this season, and Rooney aside look the shadow of the team they were last season with Ronaldo and Tevez spearheading their attack.

This really is it, you don’t often get a run of games like this, so for the next two weeks hold onto your seatbelts, because this is going to be some ride!

If we´d have had the likes of Ramsey, Nasri Bendtner available no one would have said we didn´t treat the FA Cup like it doesn´t matter. The problem is we had 10 players on the injury-list, all of who would be in contention for a start against Stoke.

We didn´t have much choice and deep down you know it too.

    retarded.

we didn’t have the players to win the game, so we didn’t win. had we had the players then we may have won.

the captain played, which shows a sign of the intent. but wenger had no choice.

i know where my priorities sit this season. yes the fa cup would have been nice but its not the league.

It’s sad that people take such a short-sighted view. Do you really think that a schedule of:-
    Jan 27th: Villa (A)
    Jan 31st: Man Utd (H)
Feb 3rd: Stoke (FA Cup Replay)
    Feb 7th: Chelsea (A)
    Feb 10th: Liverpool (H)
Feb 13th: Man City (A) FA Cup
    Feb 17th: Porto (A)

is one where we would coming out in a winning position. That is 7 seriously tough matches in 21 days. The chances of us getting 7 wins from that is smaller than our chances of signing Kaka and Messi together.

The money argument doesn’t work either. If we paid them £200k per week, we still couldn’t get quality performances out of them 7 days a week.

Without the FA Cup, that is still a tough schedule but let’s see how we do in that run first.

I agree with rogman, if we had fit players we would have mademore of agame with Stoke, but we didn’t have that luxury. Wenger had to make a decision and he chose ateam he thought could do it. unfortunately some of those players let him and themselves down.

We have massiveg amesto come which won’twin anyone the league but will place those teams willing to take the opportunity in the driving seat.

Managers have to make calls, and Wenger did just that. It’s up to the players now. Lets get behind him and the team.

what nonesense to suggest we treat the cup with contempt.

so with a squad riddled with injuries and 4 big league games in a short space of time what would you have us do.

we have no striker so do propose we risk arshavin in the cup. the cup doesnt even lead to CL footy. the league has to be priority.

would rather gallas or verma played and got injured?

    this argeuement is so ridiculous

If you don’t know who Craig Eastmond, Francis Coquelin and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas are by now, it would be utterly embarrassing to call yourself an Arsenal fan.

    ‘Nuff said.

Remember that we were drawing 1-1 with only 12 mins. to go. And that Stoke scored their last 2 goals while first teamers Eduardo, ARshavin and Ramsey were all on the pitch and those young players you’ve never heard off had been subbed.

wait a minute, those players you mentioned are also ARSENAL players and they deserve the same support like every first player. Requesting to be paid back your ticket for watching them play is nothing short of insult.

That should have read “many plastic Arsenal fans”. How could any gooner not know who those players were. I’ve seen ‘em all play before Stoke. Where’s the writer of this article been hiding?

Is it just me or do the vast majority of Arsenal blogs (like this one) have supporters being a cunt to one another as the norm?
The point of an article is always lost to the egotistical I’m more of a smartarse than you agenda.

Mike, where in the article did I request that people should be paid back your ticket money?

What I actually suggested is that the F.A Cup should be taken off from season tickets if Arsene is going to send out Carling Cup teams.

Such a big man to call me ‘retarded’

We need a trophy like the F.A Cup to get us going again, we’ve managed to battle on three fronts in the past – why not again?

We are not in a postition to say ‘yes the fa cup would have been nice’ When we’ve won sod all for five years.

There is a big differnce between rotating your squad and treating the FA Cup with contempt.

    Arsene had no choice.

A list of injuries as long as your arm and two tough games against Bolton…

What more of a reason does anyone want?

Ramsey was available as he came on as sub in the second half.

A much better side could have been put out against Stoke and seen us safely through into the next round.

Which brings us back to the argument that the squad is not good enough….Fabianski and Silvestre as I mentioned in the article shouldn’t be even at the club.

Stoke have a very good home record this season and there’s no guarantee that including the rested players would have resulted in a win. Had that been the case the moans would have been about us lacking squad strength. Yes, winning the FA Cup would have been nice but not at the price of taking us out of the title race at this stage. Tired players are at greater risk of picking up injuries and Wenger was right to take the longer view.

Eboue, Song and Nasri would have won us the game on Sunday, had they featured.

We have a fantastic squad – We just don’t have them available. It’s a very different argument.

great point Harper. we lost in the last 12 mins of the game. up until then, there wasn’t much between a Stoke first team and Arsenal 3rd/4th team. Trying to win the game was what cost us in the end. Not a lack of experience.

I went to the game and I knew we may put out a weakened team, but I am not going to moan about it.

I would love to go to Wembley and win the FA Cup, but we are out, so let’s stop moaning about it and support the team for the rest of the season.

If you are an Arsenal supporter, you support Arsenal. We were in the game for 78 minutes. Why should we pay less because Arsene rests the players? And just remember, Stoke set the prices, not Arsenal.
