Mega-Fixture Run Starts Tonight At Villa Park

nicklas_bendtner

Personally, I’m still not over the disappointment of going out of the FA Cup on Sunday in the Potteries. Credit to Stoke City, they were full value for their win. I was very disappointed with our showing however.

I felt for Francis Coquelin, making his FA Cup debut at left-back. He gave a “startled rabbit in the headlights” performance at full-back (he more usually plays in midfield). Away at Stoke is not the ideal place to ease oneself into the first team.

I don’t criticise the team selection too much. Given the calls of the African Cup of Nations and our long injury list including the walking wounded like Bacary Sagna, there wasn’t much choice. I also advocated picking Lukasz Fabiański who had a fine games in the third round at Upton Park and in the ”dead” last Champions League group game in Athens against Olympiakos. Unfortunately he played a role in both the Potters’ first two goals, failing to be assertive enough from a Rory Delap long throw-in for their opener and not dealing too well with their second either, again a ball in the air from a cross.

The outfield players can’t escape blame for failing to assert themselves for too long either, although we did play ourselves back into the match as the first half either. Theo Walcott just never seemed to get any quality possession out on the wing, although Jay Emmanuel-Thomas did well up front I thought. I also thought Sol Campbell did very well for a man who before Sunday had played one game all season back at the start of the season for Notts County away at Morecambe in Football League Two. I think his short-term signing could turn out to be very astute.

With at least a replay in prospect, Le Boss tried to turn the game by making a triple substitution bringing on Aaron Ramsey, Andrey Arshavin and Eduardo for Theo Walcott, Francis Coquelin and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas with just over twenty minutes to go. Bringing on the heavy artillery from the bench is a tactic he’s employed with some success in the past in the FA Cup. This time it didn’t come off unfortunately. Around ten minutes after the substitutions Stoke went ahead and that was pretty much all she wrote.

We have to now put that disappointment firmly behind us. Nicklas Bendtner should play some part tonight. I’d imagine he’ll be selected as a substitute. With Cameroon and Ivory Coast both eliminated at the quarter-final stage from the African Cup of Nations both Emmanuel Eboué and Alex Song are on their way back from Angola. Both should be available for selection for Sunday’s game against Manchester United at the Grove, although Arsčne has said that Song looked “tired” in Cameroon’s three-one defeat by Egypt. So he did but I’m hoping he’ll have got enough kip in this week to be able to start against United. He’s been my player of the season so far by a short head from Cesc Fàbregas and Thomas Vermaelen (surely the best Premier League buy of the season).

I still don’t think we’ve got a big chance in the League this term. We’re a better side than we were last season but we’re still not the finished article. A mate of mine said at the start of the season that anybody who finishes above Chelsea this season will be champions. I agreed with him then and that’s still my opinion now. If we are going to win the League I think we need to take at least ten points from the next twelve and beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. I think that’s a really big ask but I wouldn’t rule it out ompletely.

As the old saying goes, “How do you eat an elephant?”, the answer being “very slowly, one bite at a time.” That’s the approach we need to take to the next four League fixtures, starting with tonight at Villa Park. Good luck to all those citizens of the Gooner Nation travelling up to Birmingham for the game tonight. I shall be listening with baited breath on the radio.

Keep the faith!

It’s always nice to read your articles, Vic. I’m also glad to hear that you still haven’t got over our exit from the FA Cup, because I certainly haven’t (whereas the likes of FTK are delighted that our beloved team is now out of the competition).

It’s a shame that Diaby isn’t fit for tonight’s game. We will miss his power and penetrating runs from the middle of the park (he also has a good goal scoring record against Villa), however we have an excellent replacement in Ramsey.

Defensively as a team, we need to be on top of our game, because Villa have a lot of pace and attacking talent of the likes of Milner (who is on top form for his club at present), Agbonlahor, Young and Downing as well as the threat of Dunne and Collins at set-pieces.

I really think it’s important that we achieve eight points or more from the next four games. If we can achieve this, then I really think we could win the Premiership. I just hope that we haven’t lost the great momentum we built up prior to our defeat to Stoke in the FA Cup.

I’m going for a 2-1 win to the Gooners!

Vic, I don’t know why you and FTK keep saying we need to beat Chelsea at the Bridge to win the league. WE DON’T.

We can get away with a draw, and even a loss as long as we do well with the other teams.

Anyway, there’s NO WAY we’ll beat Chelsea, not with Drogba back. I’m just hoping for a draw. This Arsenal team simply does not yet have the edge to beat a full strength Chelsea team, esp. at their home ground.

I don’t think we’ll win the league either and I’m not happy to have gone out of the FA cup. I don’t blame the boss for his team selection, he had no choice. If Sagna, Clichy and Gallas had played at Stoke, they wouldn’t play tonight because they were carrying knocks.

Agree about Campbell, he did well for a first outing.

And I don’t agree with the universal blame handed out to Fabianski for the first goal. He did have a part in it but Eastmond was more to blame than he was.

Hate to see Utd beat us to Smalling, tho I don’t think that deal is done and dusted yet, regardless of what the media are saying.

We dont need to beat Chelsea to win the league. We need 8 out of 12 points from the next 4 games to win the league. I will take a draw @ Villa & a draw @ chelsea…after these set of fixtures we really do not have any difficult games for the rest of the season in the league. So if we stay within 5 pints of the leagues of these set of games, we have a realistic chance of winning the title.

If we get 7 points out of these matches. That will mean (assuming the loss is to Chelsea as the most likely), we are still neck n neck with United for second (or 4 clear)and 6 back of Chelsea.
With our run of fixtures to the end, we just need to handle business and try to avoid dropping as many points as possible. It could still put pressure on Chelsea to continue winning, as they have a lot harder matches.
So I don’t think the title is so unrealistic, even with a loss to Chelsea.

The Stoke game is over and done with, we’re out of the FA Cup, we just need to get over it.

My last word on the subject :- Have any of the back four who started on Sunday ever played together in those positions?

Let’s look forward to beating The Villains tonight and then start to think about the next bite at the elephant.

The return of Song is massive. The scorer of Egypts goals should all be hailed as arsenal heroes. AW’s comments about Song perhaps being too tired to play on Sunday were absolutely ridiculous. He seems to become bizarrely defensive about random things does Arsene and this is of them. He seems upset about the press pointing out how much we have missed young Alex and wants the team to prove them wrong.

The problem is, the press are absolutely right on this one. We’ve missed him desperately. Denilson is alright playing alongside Song and Cesc but he’s no defensive midfielder. Song is the only player in the squad capabale of fulfilling that role in this squad. He should return to the starting eleven ASAP.

As it stands right now. we are ahead of Chelsea. They’re up on Birmingham 1-0, but they are behind us.
