The new away shirt has gone down a storm with Arsenal fans — and even former Gunners star Perry Groves is a fan. FTK first revealed the distinctive yellow with maroon pinstripes shirt here at arsenalinsider.com — just as he did the new home top a week earlier. And I gauged opinion on the Nike shirt before the Premier League clash with Stoke City at the Britannia on Saturday.
Groves told me: “There is nothing wrong with a bit of retro and I like the shirts and am all for them. Arsenal are all about history and we should wear the colours that are generally associated with the club. I’m not so sure that some of our fans will think the yellow shirt stretched over a beer belly might not be the greatest look but at least the players will look the business.”
Emirates season-ticket holder Ian Nicholson said he was a fan of the return to yellow but wasn’t sure about maroon shorts. “To me Arsenal must always play in red and white at home and yellow away from home. I don’t mind the plum pinstripes but if that means the shorts are that colour I think it would look odd. I can see what they are getting at harking back to 2006 when we wore the plum home shirts to commemorate leaving Highbury. As I said, I like to shirt but reserve judgement on the kit until we know more.”
American Gooner Ed Button, from Texas, over for a three-week visit to England to take in three Arsenal games, said he approved too. “I love the strip and can understand why the club feel the need to go back to yellow. There has been a lot of glory for the boys in that colour and let’s pray there is more to come.”
Londoner Mark Richards, an Arsenal stalwart of many years standing, said he thought the maroon trim and possible maroon shirts would make us look like Bradford City from a few years back. “I remember Bradford having a similar colour scheme although it was ,more of a gold than yellow. I would prefer to secondary colour to be blue but arsenalinsider are known to have good info when it comes to revealing the kits so we’d better get used to it. Overall though I am glad we’ll at least be back in yellow.”
