The Gooner Nation Turns On Itself

stadiumfront

The speculation over Cesc Fàbregas’ possible move back to Barcelona has taken the internal navel gazing amongst the Gooner Nation to a new level. Whether he will go or not is unclear. It is more likely than not I think, but it would appear that Highbury House is showing some determination to hang on to him.

First things first. I want him to stay. Big style. He’s one of the most gifted players in the world on his day. He also has a contract which has four more seasons to run. We all know however that contracts don’t mean nearly as much as they should in football. Cesc’s pay was beefed up in the last close season with a back-dated pay rise. His package is, according to the best information I can get – costing us well over £6 million a season with on-costs and agent’s fees.

One of the reasons for giving him a pay rise was the interest the club has in maintaining his sell-on value. The transfer fee for a player coming towards the end of his contract is far lower than a player with three or four seasons left. It wasn’t all open-handed generosity. I don’t have any information on Cesc’s personal professionalism or attitudes. I have no idea if he would sulk and throw moodies as Emmanuel Adebayor did in his last season, despite getting a big pay rise the previous summer. His attitude completely went down the toilet, having been excellent when he first arrived from AS Monaco. I was happy to see the back of him.

I’d like to think that Fàbregas has enough attachment to Arsenal having arrived as a sixteen year old to bury any disappointment if he doesn’t end up getting his apparent wish to return to Catalonia. If he is still with us come next season I want his head in the club and completely focussed on the field. There’s no point in keeping him if he’s going to swan about and sulk. I’m not in a position to know how he will react but my instinct tells me he’s professional enough to shut up and soldier. There are players who seem to understand that whatever they might want personally they have a responsibility to us, the people who pay their huge salaries, to give it their all.

The signs are that the club is going fight to keep Cesc. So they should. The history is that a player who wants to go goes however. Both Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry stayed longer than they wanted to, but only for an additional season. In our favour is Barcelona’s financial position. They aren’t skint but neither are they rolling in it.

They’re about to spend €250 million (just over £227 million) on a major re-vamp of the Nou Camp and have already agreed to lash out a reported €40 million (around £36.3 million) transfer fee to Valencia for David Villa, plus a no doubt extravagant salary package. Barcelona is a members’ club so no rich sugar daddy is around to fund transfer fees and salaries. The new UEFA financial fair play regulations are also on the horizon and the banks aren’t in the mood to lend money that they’re not completely convinced can be repaid in Spain. Aggregate club debt there has ballooned to Premier League levels at a total of €3.5 billion (£3.18 billion) according to a recent study by the University of Barcelona.

Barcelona continues to make a trading profit but there isn’t a lot of slack in their budget. That works for us. I’m sure that Cesc wants to go but we’re holding a decent hand in any negotiations. If he does stay it’ll only be for one more season though is precedent is anything to go by looking at Vieira and Henry. In those two cases I thought Arsčne got it right. We saw the best years of both those players. Neither has reached the personal heights they did with us with Juve, Inter or Barcelona, although Henry was a second-rank part of the Barça side that won everything in sight in 2008/9. Vieira also picked up three Serie A scudetti with Internazionale, although he only turned out for them in 67 Serie A games in three and a half seasons there.

Cesc is different however in that he is now approaching his peak years as a player. To lose him now would be a cruel blow to our hopes of constructing a third great team under Wenger. Some of the manager’s critics say he inherited the only good defence he’s had from George Graham. Not true. Wenger did have the brains to not fix what wasn’t broken after his arrival in October 1996. As the fabulous Wall That George Graham Built gradually wound down be built an excellent defence bringing in Jens Lehmann, Sol Campbell, Lauren and promoting Ashley Cole from the youth ranks. Before Cole he brought in Sylvinho who had to be shipped out sharpish after his EU dual nationality was questioned. It was that defence which played in The Invincibles side, winning the League in 2004. Contrary to opinion in some quarters Wenger can construct a defence. He needs to do it again if we’re going to get anywhere.

Within the Gooner Nation there’s an increasingly acrimonious debate with ultra-loyalists, caricatured as Arsčne FC supporters, on the one side and those who think Wenger is well past his time at the club on the other. I’m not instinctively somebody who looks for the middle of the road. It’s an excellent place to be run over. I’ve also blogged in the past about my suspicions that the board is in it for themselves rather than the greater glory of Arsenal FC.

In this case however, never mind what I and most Gooners care about which is success on the field and upholding the best of the club’s history and traditions, it makes no business sense to let Cesc go if we can possibly hang on to him. Part of the problem is that the board treated us like mushrooms, trying to keep us in the dark and feed us a lot of bullshit about the new ground. There were repeated statements that building the Grove wouldn’t affect the money available for the team. That was always complete bollocks. I supported the move despite what the board was saying rather than because of it.

The situation was made worse by the arrival of Roman Abramovich at Chelsea. His massive spending, way above what Chelsea could afford from their own pocket, pushed up player costs for everybody. Great for the players and good luck to them, but no good for anybody else. A lot of the money that would otherwise have been available for quality additions in the transfer market has had to go on keeping up with the Jones just to hang on to players.

We now also face competition from the Abu Dhabi millions at Manchester City. To spit the dummy as some are doing and demand sweeties like tiresome, arrogant children is puerile. I support Arsenal because I’m an Arsenal supporter. I’ll criticise and demand change if I think it’s in the best interest of the club but the “what have you done for me lately?” attitude is getting very old. Yes, Wenger needs to show that he recognises the weaknesses we all see and is addressing them. To change managers now though would in all likelihood mean another period of re-building.

I would have more sympathy if we were going backwards, plummeting down the league. We aren’t. Our problem is that we’re stuck on a plateau and don’t appear to have worked out the route back to the summit of the game. That’s the challenge that faces us all. Let’s hope that Cesc is still with us next season for a renewed assault on the commanding heights. I believe it’s a slim hope but maybe, just maybe we can look forward to one more season with him at the controls. If we can get to the next level come May 2011, then who knows?

Keep the faith!

Vic, good blog and please ignore the low life first commentee who appears to have just graduated from Nursery School.

I was going to blog tomorrow on the distasteful way that the Club continues to treat die hard Arsenal fans which ever side of the coin their allegiance lies.
Unfortunately I cannot share your optimism and hope that Fabs will stay.
I see only a mad rush to try and push up the asking price and in so doing save reputations and produce face saving formulas with only one thing in mind.

NOT SUCCESS on the field, but success with SEASON TICKET RENEWALS…(call me a cynic!)

After my lows of yesterday, I have decided not to renew my season tickets until the Fabregas transfer issue is concluded.
I repeat… WHY SHOULD I INVEST IN THE FUTURE OF ARSENAL, IF THEY CANNOT BE BOTHERED THEMSELVES?
For me it is now crucial that Arsenal prove that they will no longer accept second best. Soon financial rules will come into play, which with the Home grown regulations will mean that the previously unfair Premier League playing field will have tilted once more in our direction. If Arsenal fail to make the key signings necessary in Goal and midfield then i shall become an armchair supporter, ready to buy the Tickets in two seasons time when the number of vacant seats will have quadrupled.
Arsenal Football Club is at a cross roads, and the next direction will indicate whether the ambition is to scale the final peak or wallow in the top four saloon drinking low alcohol beers….

If Fabregas wants to go and Barca want to pay around £35 million then he should be sold now.

Hanging on to him for another season doesn’t make sense. He is recovering from a broken leg, he could well have a crap season, as have others returning from serious injury, and his value would plummet.

Being without Fabregas may force Wenger into developing a plan B and will in any event make the team a little less predictable.

There is one England international who is reported to be less than happy at his present club. If, and it’s a big if, he has recovered from a long-term injury he would be an ideal signing. His name? Owen Hargreaves !!

    J.I.N
SAF will not sell Hargreaves to The Arsenal for anything other than silly money, He does not want to strengthen Arsenal and he has shown his intention in the same way that he has off loaded Ben Foster to Birmingham.
Wenger may well be persuaded to go in for Arteta of Everton who might be a decent buy.

    FTK,

I wish I had, could afford, a season ticket to not renew, if I had one I would join your protest. For too long the board have taken the paying punters for mugs.

It won’t be long before Wenger announces that the returning, fit again, Djourou will be like a new signing and that he has the potential to be a great centre back.

Have you got your new monika sorted FTK? How about Bendtner the Baron or Arshavin the Tsar?

Finally a sensible gunner blog, I hope we keep Cesc but I don’t blame him wanting to leave, trophy-wise, although I question how he feels he would fit into the Barca squad given their recent Villa addition, the presence of,and superior understanding between Xavi and Iniesta (who didnt even play much this season due to injuries), their need for a hard tackler beside those two and their use of Messi in a wide attacking position.

I hope this forces Wenger to get rid of the dead-weights we have in post, at the back, and in midfield (Denilson is a freaking squad player and nothing more) and invest strategically on actual, proven experience, and a larger squad, so we don’t have to fall back on excuses every time in order to convince Cesc that this isn’t an endless bridge to nowhere.

Excellent blog, Vic. Best I’ve read all week. Also agree completely with FTK’s sentiments – except that it’s not only DENILSON’s failed, it’s DIABY too. Everyone here always mentions Denilson yet everyone’s favorite Diaby is ignored: he’s older than Denilson, he has even less excuse for his inexcusable displays at the end of the season.

“Contrary to opinion in some quarters Wenger can construct a defence.”

I’m not disagreeing with you but why the hell hasn’t he shown any ability to do that in the last 4 seasons?

Now in Spain they´re saying that they will sign a pre-agreement for Cesc to go to Barca at 2011 summer for 45 millions. The fee will be fixed even if Cesc plays better or worst.

Like the same deal that Real Madrid signed for Ronaldo one year before he arrived.

Apparently Arshavin will go to Barca this summer in exchange for Toure without any money.

And Arsene will have a year to find a replacement for Cesc or to see if someone on the team step up.

Anyone else think that the last 5 years have seen Wenger construct the team around a Cesc style of play? Lots of small, nimble close passing players. Could it be trying to make the team play in this style when some are clearly not suited that has caused our recent problems..I think Arhsavin, Walcott & Van Persie would benefit from a more powerful direct midfield, which Cesc is clearly not. Time to cash in and splash out on a genuine new vieria?

Barca its crazy if they let Toure join us. Arshavin is almost 30 and is a very good winger, but Toure is 27 and is probably the best player in his position.

If we are honest AW needs to sign 8 good players, that how bad it is.
Players who have got to go.
    Aluminium Very slow reaction
    Fabby A light weight flapper
Silvester is well past what he never had
Gallas is Breaking down and lost pace
    Denilson lacks quality production
Diaby has one good game in six
Rosicky is not as good as we thought
Bendner cant even trap a bag of cement
These are not 1st team players any fool can see that,

Completely agree. Rambo needs a season to get over his broken leg and hopefully the season after that he’ll be ready for a regular place in the first team. however he won’t be a like for like replacement for cesc. He will be more of a ‘complete’ midfielder like gerrard. Physically when he reaches 22 or 23 he will be far superior to cesc. He is better defensively as well but not as good at passing so i think he will be better suited to playing centre midfield in a 4-4-2 next to song. And we’ll never have any trouble with him being tired after summer international tournaments or him wanting to return to his ‘home club’ thank god.

    A few thoughts:
1.Cesc will fit quite nicely in the Barca team. Less you forget, it was Barca that developed his style of play at the same time they were honing Messi’s skills. Additionally he is friends with many of the players that came through their youth acad while he was there for several years.
2.He will settle in quickly and will play regularly
    3. The last thing that a club or coach wants is a player that doesn’t want to be there. Simply put he just won’t be productive.
    4.Cesc is a great player but he isn’t worth 60M, just isn’t.
    5. Real paid 80M for Ronaldo because they not only got a top player but they got a marketing machine who made them stupid money in merchandising. Cesc doesn’t provide that for Barca.
6.In the end, when a player wants to leave, they usually are allowed to do so.
In the end he is a product of Barca and the lure of winning major trophies; playing a style that fits him and one that Arsenal attempts but falls short of emulating; higher wages (Messi is on 210,000 a week and Cesc is at what, 1/2 of that and looses so much more through taxes); It’s home–again, it’s home, sunny Barca; It’s a massive club that dwarfs Arsenal in all aspects and so again, why would he not want to leave. It’s just a question of time and that time will be before the next season starts.

    1. His style of play was developed by Arsenal not Barcelona. Maybe you forget that he arrived here at 16 not 20.
    2. You say the same of point 1.
    3. Agree
4.If Xabi Alonso worth 35m at 27 years old and Barca paid 40 + Etoo for a 28 years old striker who didnt settle quickly and only scored 16 goals and 42m for Villa who is almost 29. So I think at least Cesc worths 55m considering that he´s only 23, captain of a top club, plays in a toughter league and will not have any problems of adaptation. Plus is more difficult to find a great creative midfielder than a striker, winger o defender.
    5. Not even close at the marketing level of CR9 but he has more marketing than Xavi or Iniesta just for give some example.

Great post – the first I have seen that really holds any weight! I feel UEFA or FIFA or whoever needs to step in and sort out the financial issues Football is now facing, it should have been stamped out when Chelsea first did it but thats a whole different kettle of fish. Maybe a salary cap is on the horizon and it will go the NHL route.

I hope Cesc stays but I can only seem him staying if Arsene strengthens the team – by strengthening I mean new GK, two new defenders and two new midfielders. I think we had a great season that was hampered by lack of squad depth which was shown once we have key players injured. With 4 weeks to go we were in a position to get the double, unfortunately we came away with nothing but thats life.

Thanks to the Spanish press (again) Cesc is now unsettled but looking at history, Wenger never let a player leave until he had his best playing years at Arsenal, which to me can only suggest he will only let cesc leave if he does a Adebarndoor – which I cant see him doing but we shall see.
