Why Cesc has earned the right to join Barca

cesc
by JOSH BEDNASH Very soon the unthinkable may become reality. Our captain fantastic, talismanic heartbeat and outstanding performer may jump ship and head home to a land of sunbathing, tapas and silverware. His decision to allegedly ask for Arsenal to enter negotiations with the Spanish champions smacks of surrender, giving up and packing the North London trophy hunt in prematurely.
However if he does leave, and at this point I must reiterate that he hasn’t gone yet, when the ensuing dust settles all of us will realise that Cesc has been playing above the calibre of his peers for a number of years now and has earned the right to seek pastures new. If it pains us to watch Diaby stroll languidly around the edge of the penalty box, or Almunia flap at yet another routine shot, think about how that would get to Cesc who, in looking around to seek comfort, instead meets the blank, expressionless gaze of Mikael Silvestre.
Then, on flicking on Sky Sports that night he sees Barca, his boyhood club, Spanish, European and World champions, extending their lead at the top of the table, led by his national teammates, best friends, and managed by his lifelong idol. We love him, but who can blame him. Therefore, after consoling peers, throwing mobile phones at walls and whipping away tears, it will be time to look to the future, a Cesc-less future, but one we must face, and with hope.

I say this because despite his brilliance in every single way, Cesc is by no means irreplaceable. Vieira arguably proved to be irreplaceable, as holding midfielders have come and gone since without leaving any distinguishable mark. Bergkamp, and what he brings to any side also falls into that category yet with Cesc, finding a suitable replacement need not be an impossible task. In terms of what Cesc gives to the team with regards to creativity, imagination and flair, Nasri arguably possesses each of these attributes, though perhaps in a ‘lite’ version.

Watching Samir Nasri either leaves you unbelievably frustrated at his gradual isolation, or astounded at his subtlety and ingenuity. Both have been exemplified at times this season, but nothing has been more telling of his raw talent than when he picked his way through 3 Porto defenders to smash the ball past the bewildered keeper in this year’s Champions League Last 16. Although often operating from a wider position, he certainly has both the attributes and potential to step into Cesc’s shoes, a role he filled with mixed results towards the back-end of last season yet one which he could well make his own.

Aaron Ramsey is another potential alternative if his injury doesn’t hamper his rapid development. Prior to that horrific tackle, Ramsey was beginning to live up to his £5 million pound price-tag and was enjoying undoubtedly his best season in an Arsenal shirt. Nevertheless, Ramsey is a different player to Cesc, flourishing in a deeper role by enjoying the liberty of creating attacking moves from an archetypal central midfield position. Cesc was indeed once a player of this mould, yet his best seasons have been when he has been given far more attacking freedom, either backed up by Flamini or Song, and as a result scoring a fantastic amount of goals.
As of yet, it would seem Ramsey may not quite have the necessary qualities to be able to be such an offensive weapon, yet his development may mirror that of Cesc, and in three to four years he may even be the subject of a £50 million bid from Cardiff. Fran Merida is also worth a mention because, if he himself rejects the lure of Spain, he may be the best candidate for developing into a Cesc-type sort of player.
On joining Arsenal in 2005, ironically from Barcelona and even more ironically aided by Cesc’s agent, he was immediately being tipped as the next Fabregas. It is unlikely such widespread opinion would have been merely founded on a similarity in looks and origin, and judging by what we have seen of the Spaniard so far, such foresight may not be that far off. A brilliant goal against Liverpool in the Carling Cup and a more routine one at the Reebok gave us a taster of his potential, yet for this to be realised to the full with such immediacy may be a step too far.

External replacements are, however unlikely, also a viable option, and if Wenger does dip into the funds Ivan Gazidis has so explicitly revealed are available, he may now need to add Central Midfield dynamo to his shopping list of Goalkeeper and Centre-Half. If, as has been rumoured, Yaya Toure checks in as part of the Cesc deal, then his arrival may prove to be an apt replacement, although Toure is of a more Vieira-esque mould, of which we seem to have already found in Alex Song, and thus his arrival looks unlikely.

Another rumoured replacement is Mikel Arteta, a brilliantly creative player who I believe would flourish at the Emirates, or perhaps even Jimmy Bullard, looking for an escape from Hull, and possessing bags of quality, hunger and Englishness. Personally however I wouldn’t bank against Wenger looking after his rapidly growing transfer kitty by instead dedicating another 4 years to developing one of the afore mentioned gooners, a decision which would be a highly costly one.

Finally, dare we forget the fact that Cesc is of course our captain, and so inevitably Arsene will have to elect his 4th permanent captain in as many years. Cesc is the sort of captain who leads by example, and in being the longest serving and most important player at the club, he was a perfect choice to take over from Gallas in 2009. With this in mind, Robin Van-Persie seems to be the most suitable option to replace Cesc as official armband bearer. Robin, when free from injury, continues to show his astounding talent, whilst the Red and White of Arsenal now seems to be coursing through his veins as he is never found wanting when it comes to passion, desire or telling his teammates what’s what.

However, a potential spanner in the works could be Sol Campbell, who pledged his short-term future to Arsenal yesterday amid speculation regarding a possible move to Celtic. Sol personifies desire, leadership and influence, and his performances since returning to the side have pleasantly surprised even Arsene Wenger. Sol could help to re-galvanize a club which will be heavily hit by the crushing loss of one of the greatest players this division has ever seen. It certainly is a loss, an amendable one, but inescapably devastating.

It won’t happen for 30 million that is for sure, and I think to many are taking what the Spanish papers have said as Bible.

Barca think they can buy a player on a five yearcontract for 30 million is ridiculous. They have stated that that is all they are prepared to pay – so it won’t happen.

They have unsettled the player – but unless the math adds up – it won’t happen.

You don’t need inside info, you don’t need to speak to Wenger. All you need is the smallest of Brains which unfortunately most bloggers, paper reporters etc. don’t have. Oh and a hell of a lot of readers that can’t make up their own minds.

I can understand why he would want to go home. However, with Xavi and Ineista at Barca he would not have become the player he is today.

So he does not derserve the chance to go. He should honour us and what we have done for him.

That said, if he really wants to go, then we should let him.

    Wherever, Forever, Arsenal.

Gooner u must be day dreaming, nasri and ramsey to replace cesc? how many times was cesc injured and out this past season and did these mentioned players step up to fill his shoes, absolutely not! i wonder what kind of an illusion is this in comforting yourself that cesc will easily be replaced.these two are no doubt talented players but they simply dont have the vision, precision and the influence that cesc has on the arsenal team. get real man and realise that arsene has to buy quality players if wants to keep those he has already groomed.otherwise we will keep losing players just like that when they have just reached their peak, they need trophies to stay at arsenal.

Henry, Viera, Pires, Ljunberg, Edu, & many more left Arsenal with champion in hand & they are all proven Legend. Cristiano Ronaldo left MU with champions league champion +BPL champion +FA champion +World player of the year & many more.MU fans let him go with a smile. Fabregas only won charity shield & FA cup. If he is the best, win Champions League or at least BPL once for us. PROVE IT! After this Barca will chase Jack Wilshere, trust me. Arsenal is the source of the best.

Don’t agree with everything – but in a strange way it might give AW the kick up the arse he needs. But let’s face it, we never replaced Vieira, Henry and doubt if we will replace Cesc because we are tight. I f we were not we would have won the league twice in the past 5 seasons – just a bit of investment would have done it. I love Arsenal, but have to admit that we are not the force we once were, maybe because there is too much pressure on AW since Dein left?

Everyone is missing the point. Fabregas has a choice, stay at Arsenal or go to Barca. Fully appreciate all the points in the opening paragraph of the article but what can we offer as an incentive to stay? Bugger all, because the Board and Wenger have not invested in the team. We are nowhere near strong enough to win the league let alone the Champions league and we won’t win the FA Cup because Wenger is allowed to pretty much disregard it.

Fabregas has a contract up to 2015 and just got a big raise in his salary well if he said that I don’t want to play for arsenal any more and I want to go back to barca then I would tell him return back the salary raise and let your friends in barca pay us 55M then you are free to go where ever you want

Situations like this would have been avoided if only AW replaced RVP when he was injured and also bought either a CD or a DM in the january transfer window. Seriosly speaking we would have been EPL champions now.If you go through the games will played from january till date, you will realise this is true. I wouldnt want to blame Fab for is decision(though still a rumour), is anyone here who doesnt like success or to be associated with success. Now is the time to quickly get in some quality signings and use that as a convincing tool for Fab staying at the club. Come to think of it, we have never been able to replace any quality player we sold in the past, who says we can achieve that now? The way forward is simple, buy quality players

As Gazidis stated in his Q&A the reason why Arsenal like to put players on long contracts is so they have high sell on values. That has become the new purpose of having contracts. I doubt that Arsenal would ever let cesc get to the end of his contract until he was over 30. They would offer him a new contract with a realistic buy out clause like marseilles did with Nasri before he signed for us.

I don’t think Rvp should be captain. As much as he is a brilliant player he can’t expect to be captain until he can prove he can stay fit for a whole season. Since he’s been first choice he hasn’t managed to be injured for less than 3 months every season.

2nd choice would be Verminator for captain.
    1st choice, Cesc.

Arsenal will stay Arsenal, we have players who can do the job, Nasri is the man, because of Fab presence he couldn’t, now that he will be the main man, things will change ofcourse. Arshavin can do it as well, it is either we get 50.000.000 for him or nothing, he can rot in the reserves, I totally agree with Bellend, Fab can go fuck himself. We are the mighty ARSENAL.

Every player has to respect his contract..it dont matter who comes calling…Cesc should know better..However if he feels this Arsenal side won’t achieve anything then might as well cough up the money for the remainder of his contract then he can go and score 10000000 goals in Barcelona for all I care…It dont matter if you are a good player or a great player..it’s the club and manager who made you that great and it is the fans who paid their money to cheer for you…if you cant respect that then atleast respect the contract given to you THAT YOU SIGNED with no pressure…

Of course Cesc deserves to go – he’s 23 and a world class player. He’s watching players of a similar age that are also world class — Cronaldo, Messi, Rooney — win all the big trophies and awards while he languishes with a team of lazy coasters and pathetic chokers.

However, Arsenal hold all the financial cards here. And Barca are in massive debt, they can’t pony up the kind of cash Arsenal are sure to demand. Arsenal don’t want Ibra or Toure — and Toure’s made it very clear he doesn’t want us. (Neither does Arteta). And those are the only 2 players they could offer.

Also, I’m sure Barca’s conduct have made the club even angrier than they’d normally be about a club unsettling a player, so that will just harden the club’s position.

However, Arsenal do risk keeping a player who doesn’t want to stay – but Cesc does love Arsenal and Arsene. And AW can be very persuasive when he needs to be.

So unless Barca come up with the cash that Arsenal will demand (and they’d have to dig deep, go further into debt to pay it), I think AW will persuade Cesc to stay 1 more season and we’ll lose him next summer.

Looking at the notes in FC Barcelona accounts for their 2009 financial year. audited by Dxxxxxte, it would appear that they still owe The Arsenal 12.000 milos de Euros (€) and €5.000 for Hleb!
There is also a note about a Mexican player of Tottenham, now loaned out or shipped out to Turkey!

Wenger is killing me! We need the exact same solutions at the start of 2010/11 as we did last season.

Fabregas is by no means irreplaceable but what worries me is if he does go will Wenger actually buy anyone?

I’m bored of these fucking lines: “I believe in the spirit and attitude of this team. We have a good squad with massive belief…”

Wenger has repeatedly failed to replace players, let alone replace quality with quality.

Has Chamakh actually signed yet? I’ve not seen anything on the club website.

It will be a sad day to Cesc leave – he’s been incredible for us – but we’ll cope, providing we actually IMPROVE our squad.
