Arsenal silence over Cesc shames our great club

crestclosup

By CARL ELDRIDGE Arsenal should hang their heads in shame today as we are left to feed on scraps concerning the possible move of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona. We as fans deserve at the very least a statement pointing out the current situation and the club’s stance on the impending move.

The first twist and turn of many to come in the will-he, won’t-he Fabregas transfer to Barca came about this morning when Peter Hill-Wood declared he is confident the Spanish ace will stay. Hill-Wood is an Old Etonian who I have always considered somewhat of a cigar-chomping Old School type who is a tad out of touch with the real world when it comes to the Arsenal. His comments are hardly an official line. But at least he has said something, unlike the club in an official statement or indeed AW. The silence is deafening and it does the club no favours by ignoring the fans who are desperate to know what is happening.

For the record, Hill-Wood refused to confirm a valuation of our wantaway skipper but insisted that no bid would be welcomed from Catalonia cherry-pickers, according to the latest reports. ‘The message has been given to them we don’t want to lose him and will do our damnedest to keep him,’ said Hill-Wood. ‘We haven’t had an official approach from them and have made it perfectly clear we don’t want to lose him. I don’t know if he will stay. I’ve really got little to say but we very much hope he stays with us and we’re confident he will.’

Instead of what we want to hear, the media and Press are spoon-fed a load of shite about Sol Campbell wanting more quality at the club for a push next season. You don’t say. Nothing against Sol, who has done a fine job since returning to the club but surely the powers that be can cobble together something so we have at least an idea of the position we are in with Cesc. I am starting to get more wound up by the lack of communication with the army of Arsenal fans than I am about the fact that Fabregas is on his bike…or could be anyway. We seem to be getting plenty of reminders and literature and messaging concerning renewing our season tickets.

Even Harry Redknapp has had his bleedin’ say on the deal, telling the Sun: ‘Let’s be honest, it’s a dream move for Fabregas and, as much as Arsene would love to keep him, once a player’s made up his mind it is very, very difficult to stop.

“That is one hell of a scrap to win, and I will be absolutely amazed if the lad doesn’t join Barcelona,” he added. “Let’s face it, he’s a Spanish lad, he grew up in the same youth team as half those established stars, his family is there and so are his mates. And that’s before we even get to the fact he’ll be joining the best club in the world – because after signing David Villa too, that’s how I rate them – with the chance of the biggest honours in club football every year. I know Arsenal aren’t exactly small fry but this is Barcelona we’re talking about, where major trophies are expected every year – and usually not too far from arriving either.”

Bloke takes the two-bob pikeys to fourth spot and now he has the temerity to talk about us!

It is said Barca would like Fabregas to publicly declare his plans but they are reluctant to spend more than £30million on a player they had as a youngster. Tough luck, up your bid. Nou Camp president Joan Laporta said: ‘We are not going to pay more than we think is normal and logical. You have to take into account what he has won and the needs of both clubs. There are various ways of coming to the right price for a player who was raised by Barcelona.’

It all comes down to the upcoming Barca president elections and it is said that outgoing supremo Laporta wants to complete a deal before he leaves on June 30, apparently. Speculation in Spain suggests that Fabregas will be unveiled as a Barca player on either June 4 or 9, the first of which is the first date when Spain’s World Cup squad arrive back from training in Austria, while June 9 is likely to be a day off for Vincente del Bosque’s players following a friendly against Poland in Murcia.

There doesn’t seem to be a lack of communication from Barca to their fans. The same can’t be said our end. Should we inundate the club’s communication office with phone calls, emails, carrier pigeons and other assorted forms of messages of disquiet one wonders? If you think we at arsenalinsider should launch a campaign to bombard them and get some answers do let us know…I’m up for it!

Cesc is not going to Barcelona this year
    I don’t think they have 50 £ for a player they don’t need.

Today Xavi has come out and said that cesc should join barca .
He has insulted arsenal by saying that we wont win anything and for cesc to win he needs to join barca..
Its time for cesc to come out and say something..he has to remember that it was Arsenal and wenger who made him not barca..im sure there will be lot of talented players in barca academy who are not making it big because of lack of opportunities and proper guidance

How on earth can you criticise the club for ‘silence’ then quote the bleeding Chairman who has said we’ve heard nothing from barca, the boy isn’t for sale and we haven’t even thought about a fee for someone we’re not selling?

Also how can the words of the Chairman not be ‘official’?

What the hell are you on about? Hill-Wood has come out and said that Cesc is not for sale and that no offer has been received from Barcelona? If he leaves we will get a good fee and move on as a club. Stop reacting to everything you read on newsnow, I imagine there are a lot of fans sitting there refreshing their newsnow browsers at work waiting for news and hanging off every word that gets written. Get a life!!! News is an industry so is football. This constant paranoia from Arsenal fans that the club is keeping them in the dark on everything is nonsense as are the constant stories that state we are going backwards as a club. Arsenal football club is run correctly as a business i.e it generates it’s own income and decides where to spend the profits. To compare us to Chelsea,Barcelona and even United and Liverpool(not to mention City) on this basis is pointless. The current English Champions are in debt to their owner to the tune of 750 million pounds. This is simple economics, get a grip . If we sel Cesc for 50 million or more for a player we picked up for next to nothing it will also be good business.

No, I don’t think the club should be saying anything. If they commented on every half-arsed piece of press speculation they’d have no time to run the club. Arsenal is bigger than any one player. If Cesc does go then Aresenal will go on, life will go on. It will not be the end of the world. As we have seen in the past if a player doesn’t want to stay there is no point in keeping him. Having said that, I don’t think he will go yet. It could be Cesc just putting a stake in the ground to say to Arsene, “if the squad doesn’t improve and start winning things then I’m off.” Whatever. I have faith in what the Prof is about. Let him get on with what he does better than any manager I’ve known in over 40 years of supporting the Gunners. He has taken us this far. Let’s see how far it goes.

Arsenal have never commented on speculation, ever in their history. Why should they now? . So no one will risk anything to compromise the outcome. People moan about our restrained business set up, but it has meant that we are never in a position where we need to sell. If Cesc speaks out and asks for a transfer he misses out on his 10% sign on fee; so if he’s uncertain then expect silence as well. Arsenal will say nothing so as not to encourage Barça. So it’s a case of who blinks first.

At this moment, there is a lot of “smoke and mirrors” to the story. There is clearly a desire on the part of Barcelona to get Fabregas. However, how much of this is has been formalised? Not a lot as far as I can see.

While things are still in the media; are “rumours”; and are informal, the only thing Arsenal can and should say is “As a policy Arsenal does not comment on rumours about its players who are under contract.”

Should Barcelona put in an offer, the the response should be be “Arsenal F.C. has received an offer for Fabregas and we are considering it (or he is not for sale, end of story).” That should be followed by either “It is unacceptable” or “Arsenal have accepted the offer. We are sad to see Fabregas leave but we wish him well.”

As perrygrovesworld correctly points out, if Fabregas asks for a transfer, he loses his 10% sign on fee which is a hefty amount of money that you can bet he will want Barcelona to cover. Also, if he puts in the request, his standing with Arsenal fans diminishes and he cannot say “it was not at my insitigation” despite everyone knowing that it is. I suspect that Arsenal are right now playing the waiting game to force him to make that transfer request.

Arsenal has always gone about its business quietly, without much fanfare. It has always been like this. The club does not respond to rumours, feed the rumours, or start any rumours. I personally like it this way – it separates us from the classless twats that behave like thugs. Like how Barca is behaving now. We don’t jump the gun, we don’t panic, we don’t feed our fans stuff that may all turn out to be just a load of well, nothing. If Barca puts in an offer and we accept/refuse them, I’m quite sure the official website would say we accepted/refused Barca’s offer. At this point of time, putting up an official statement only says we’re panicking. I this point of time, I think at this point, the folks at Barca would be thinking: “WTF? How do we make Arsenal fold. They’re not even flinching!” Arsenal – with the exception of PHW we have a bunch of serious poker player in our management team.

TO ALL THE IDIOTS WHO THINK THIS STORY IS JUST LIES:

Every time these stories come up, Cesc and the club have swiftly denied them in the press. Cesc always quickly issues official denials.

    NOT THIS TIME.

He and the club have had 3 days to deny the story about Cesc requesting a transfer.

    Their silence is deafening.

Ballague has regularly interviewed Cesc, he knows him personally, Cesc knows him. He has regular access to Cesc. Never in the past has Ballague come out and declared outright “Cesc has asked to leave.” In the past all he’s done is report on what Barca want, how Cesc loves Barca, and then he’d speculate on when or if he might return there.

HE HAS NEVER EVER REPORTED THAT CESC HAS ASKED TO LEAVE.

Do you really think he would jeopardize his regular access to Cesc for interviews by inventing such a story? He knows Cesc would be upset if he declared on national TV that Cesc flew to London to have a private meeting with Arsene where he asked for a transfer.

He would only report such a story if he HAD CESC’S PERMISSION.

    Get a clue, people.

Now, the issue is that Barca simply don’t have much cash to work with and Arsenal are playing hardball. They have no interest in Ibra or Toure. And this bullsh!t from Barca about Cesc being one of their own — as if that should factor into the price — is rightly ignored by Arsenal. Barca have poached 16 and 17 yr old players from other clubs too — do their former clubs have some kind of proprietary hold on them as well?

It was Cesc who alerted and surprised Barca in his press conference in Spain last week (when all this started) by saying he wants his future sorted out before the world cup, and that he’d only go to Barca. That was an obvious “come and get me now” plea. They were unprepared for it and they don’t have the money Arsenal will demand.

As to the club’s silence…I have to disagree with Eldo. I think silence is the best way to handle this. Barca talk too much and wind up irritating their fans, raising expectations and often disappointing them. Not telling them the full truth. Discussions are going on behind the scenes, probably. I think Arsenal will fight to keep him 1 more season and we’ll lose him next summer.

After the Stoke City game (1-3), if you are curious!, Cesc flew to Barcelona. His mother, Núria, by name, has a company called “Alter Ego”. She has paid €100,000 for a box at the Cicuit de Catalunya, for the whole season. “Alter Ego” provides services for house maintenance, child minding, complete leisure provision etc., etc. Cesc was there fpr a promotion do for his mother. Among the guests were Thiery Henry, persona non grata with FC Barcelona, and his close friend the former world champion and Arsenal supporter, Lewis Hamilton. THEY HAVE MADE STATMENTS BEFORE, FAB4 HAS COME OUT LOADS OF TIMES TO QUELL THESE BARAC RUMOURS. WHY NOT THIS TIME?[/quote]So why do you not believe what they say? All the statements from the club in the past have said Fab isnt for sale at the moment and if he was it would be a darn sight more tan the pittance they are offering (if Barca had the balls to actually make an offer). AFC cant and shouldnt respond to every fabricated story in the media.

You wont believe AFC but you will believe a flea bitten hack who probably doesnt know who he is writing about. Makes no sense to me.

I have to agree with you guildford. We are in the age of instant information and the age of pr and arsenal need to sort out their public relations.

A quick line on the website saying we haven’t recieved an offer and cesc isn’t for sale unless a really big offer comes in, wouldn’t be a bad thing. Not commenting on rumours makes them worse if, if by commenting on them you quash them.

The Club cannot comment, although Cesc wants to go, there has been no official bid or contact between the clubs which is what arsenal have said.

I would have thought that the price would be a compromise of around £38 million.

Barcelona do not need Cesc, and now, nor do we, as we would then have to rebuild at the end of next year, get rid of him and spend the £85 million total, and we will win the league and prove everyone wrong! Be positive fellow Gooners!

I really do understand the point(s) you are making but I don’t think it is necessary to launch any protest for now. My take for lack of communication from the arsenal hierach may be the fact that there is really nothing to say given they have had to deny fab leaving man 8) y many times and are now fed up this time.

Personnally, if fab wants to go then so be it and it will not be the end of arsenal as a club. Another star will rise again.

Absolute rubbish. The club is absolutely right to remain silent over a matter that has all the hallmarks of a Barca/Agent/Media generated rumour. IF discussions are taking place behind the scene with Barca or Cesc then then these should correctly take place confidentiality. If the club starts responding to every red-top or internet blog rumour then there would be something coming out every day. On the other hand if some fans need a daily fix of b*ullsh*t then try reading Ian Wright or Harry Redknapp, who are more than happy to oblige for a few quid.

Yeah don’t you think it’s funny how the Official website was all smug with their “Transfer rumours” section and all of a sudden we haven’t seen one for a few days since all there’s been is pages and pages about Cesc leaving!

They didn’t think about that did they!

This is a bit more than a “half arsed piece of press speculation”. This “rumour” is unsettling for the team, undermines the manager and the club. Everything we hear from the papers suggests that cesc is in control of the situation not the club and as you say arsenal is bigger than any one player so they should take control of the situation by making a statement to the effect of:
    1) Barca can f*ck off if they don’t come up with £60 million or more
    2) Cesc is under contract with Arsenal and is not for sale.

Why is the chairman, who doesn’t seem to have much say and we all know the main men at arsenal are Gazidis, Wenger, Fizman and now increasingly Kroenke, have to be the one to tow the line in a tabloid? Why isn’t gazidis saying it on the website.

P.S to those fans who feel ‘ashamed’ and ‘embarrassed’ because the club does not comment of anything and everything in the press about their club (or in the case of tax-crook Harry Redknapp, anybody else’s club) – just tell your critics that we are THE ARSENAL and don’t give a sh*t.

    Barndoor Bendtner, wake up.

This all started last week when Cesc was ON VIDEO in a press conference in Spain in which he said he wanted to sort out his future before the world cup, and saying he would only go to Barca.

Then the journo who has regular access to him, Guillem Ballague, reported the story that he’d flown to London to have a private meeting with AW to express his desire to leave.

John Cross, a gooner, from the Mirror and Graham Hunter, Spain-based journalist, all confirmed the story. None of these journalists ever come out with such a strong, firm claim like this if it’s not true. When they don’t have any firm info, all they do is speculate or talk about what Barca have told them or what Cesc has told them in interviews.

But they have all come out in the open saying firmly that this meeting happened. If it had not, Cesc would’ve come out swifly and denied it, as he always does.

Sorry, Marie, but the story that AW is not in london does not mean anything, as the timeline fits just fine. AW was in London when the mtg occurred, he then left London afterward.

To repeat, CESC SAID IN A TAPED PRESS CONFERENCE (shown on TV) that he wanted to sort out his future before the wc, and he’d only go to Barca. He said it.

And if all of this is a lie,

WHY HAS CESC NOT DENIED IT, AS HE ALWAYS DOES???

That hack is the journalist who has regular access to Cesc, has interviewed him personally a number of times, and whom Cesc knows personally. You really think Cesc wouldn’t be upset if this story were a lie? You really think he wouldn’t have denied it by now? Twit.

Arsenal don’t comment on transfer speculation when it suits them, you plum

And it suits them not to comment this side of June, because they are trying to get as many season ticket renewals in as possible.

And since when had a director of the current champions of Europe saying that they’ve contacted us and are awaiting an answer been speculation?

If there ever was a need for an announcement one way or another from the club, than that is it.

When Cesc is sold, sometime after the 1st June & before the World Cup, I fully expect you plums to eat some humble pie

    PLEASE CHILL OUT PEOPLE.

when Cesc signs for barcelona, arsenal.com will issue a statement confirming the transfer,

Cesc himself will record a goodbye message for the supporters explaining his reasons,

And you can be sure Arsene Wenger will have negotiated the maximum possible fee given that cesc wanted to leave the club.
