Feelings turn to Fear for Fabregas

fabregas01

By JAMES CURTIS How happy Cesc Fabregas looked on Monday, juggling a football with his knees during a light warm-up session among his team-mates. It was all fun and games in the Spanish camp and the cameras caught it nicely: Cesc was cheerful. He had a tan. This is where he wanted to be. The Barcelona players were making it as overly pleasant as possible. And it wouldn’t have surprised me if Xavi was behind the camera choreographing the finicky picture. While Gerard Pique calls for “take two, people”, an unsuspecting Fabregas wanders into frame.

The whispers on Cesc’s left shoulder inform him about the greatness that awaits him at Barcelona, as the righteous French voice on his right shoulder struggles to be properly heard. Fabregas is hearing Arsene Wenger, but he isn’t listening. It’s beginning to look a lot like the film 300 when Ephialtes is lead astray by The Persians with promises of women and riches. If Fabregas makes the switch to Barcelona, something tells me he will have made a similar blunder.

As the saga continues I fear for Cesc. The words of his Barcelona friends are becoming increasingly see-through, those of people who don’t necessarily have his best interests in mind. They appear to care but they don’t, because if they did they might say things like: “Cesc is intelligent and only he knows what is best for him.” All the while, Xavi, Pique and Carles Puyol say they don’t want to speculate on his future and it wouldn’t be right to do so, yet in the same sentence persist on talking about how great it would be to have Fabregas back in Catalonia.

At Barcelona it’s election season, and in the hunt to succeed Joan Laporta as club president are Sandro Rosell and Alfons Godall. Barcelona fans boast, and are proud of their club for its democratic ways, but all the while they vote for people who would lie through their teeth to get elected. Laporta promised he would take David Beckham to the club upon arrival. Indeed he made post although Goldenballs joined rivals Real Madrid instead.

For their players then, pantomime comes as second nature. After filmmaking school, Barcelona’s footballing cast attend a media propaganda course, and top of the class this season was Xavi who made Cesc Fabregas his senior year project. Having once held a soft spot for Barcelona, they are now becoming increasingly domineering. When Thierry Henry won the Champions League there I was happy for him. Pep Guardiola is a likeable guy. Really though, Laporta and his confederacy sit at the other end pulling their puppet strings and making smiley faces.

We have reached the point where Cesc’s name has been dragged through the mud. Barcelona want him but won’t pay the right amount. Cesc only turned 23-years-old this month and carries with him plenty of real estate for the future, so why do Barcelona undervalue him so much given the ludicrous sums thrown at less gifted players? Because of this, I fear for Cesc that if he leaves for Barcelona this summer it might not turn out to be how he envisioned.

Before long though Cesc will have read the Basque admission manuscript and shall probably begin using the same sly tricks. Already I see it working its medicine after his latest meeting with Wenger. “It was probably the greatest conversation I have had with someone in my life,” he said. “I respect him so much. He told me to concentrate on my football and the World Cup and he will deal with whatever happens in my future.”

Are the fans supposed to feel sorry for him, because he is chained to a contract worth millions that seems to be making his life a burden? No, the only sad face should be on the millions of Arsenal fans who probably feel pressured into giving Cesc a gratified send-off for his remarkable efforts while wearing the shirt. So often the supporters wave goodbye, say thanks and good luck, before said superstar drives off into the sunset, leaving behind the pollution of London and the dry blood of English football’s battleground.

Ok, I suppose that cozen pushover will be me again, eating duck soup while our captain splashes around in Barcelona’s giant communal bath. This time however, the reason for my blessings will be that things turn out well for Cesc. My advice for him though? Just remember to pack a long scrubbing brush, because those who might be massaging his every need now might not be there to scratch his back in the future.

Camera rolling … Arsenal attempt to win some more silverware, take six!

Has anybody seen a quote from Guardiola, saying that he wants Cesc this year?

    I haven’t and I believe he has other priorities than adding a Xavi/Iniesta look-alike.

I think this whole farce has been about Laporta making a farewell splash and if I was Cesc, I would be very wary of being a pawn in his game.

    It is the only point!

As the author says this whole affair is transparent.

CESC has been manipulated…..perhaps it took a call from Arsene to explain this to him.

Unless they offer £40m + he is not going. And I cannot see them throwing that sort of money at us this close season.

Nice blog mate, loved that last line! What worries me is the only thing Barca can say with certainty is that if there is a deal, its gonna be DELAYED. Just another excuse for Arsene not to find a replacement.

Dude, this article is too beautiful for words- great job putting words to what many Arsenal fans feel, sadly there are 2 unknown factors that make it terribly difficult to judge Cesc- the Board and Arsene Wenger.

    Questions:
    1) Has the board dedicated itself to deceiving everyone including our cap’n and best player about the availability of true transfer funds.

    2) Will Wenger decide that Barca will always have an allure to Cesc since a big reason why we fall is because he does not invest strategically in experienced heads who realistically may fail but will prevent us from using ‘age’ as an excuse.

=>again, great job with the article.

    Great piece, jimc.

For the first time this week, I am actually more hopeful that Cesc will stay — at least for another year. All week long I’ve been following the discussion of various journalists and Arsenal bloggers on Twitter (all discussing what they’re hearing from their contacts inside the club) and I’ve seen the general feeling go from negative (i.e., everything they’re hearing confirms Cesc really wants to go and that it will happen this summer) to last night’s most positive consensus. Today they’re all most positive about Cesc staying.

That’s because Arsenal are holding firm and telling Barca to go to hell, Cesc isn’t for sale. Barca have indeed contacted Arsenal but Arsenal are just not responding. They’re all also saying that Arsenal have come out looking very good in this entire situation precisely because of the club’s silence, while Barca have done quite the opposite.

John Cross has 2 good articles today, sourced from his contacts from inside the club:

“Arsenal tell Barcelona that Cesc Fabregas is not for sale at any price”

I am begining to get tired of this talk. is there nothing else to say about our club Arsenal? Infact the tension and heat we the fans are generating is even worst than the conduct of barca and all the haters of Arsenal. Though i like this write up, i think we should stop talking about fab because this is already causing division within the Arsenal world.

This one is disappointing if true:-

Bendtner said: My greatest ever dream is to play for the two biggest clubs in Spain…I think it is possible, and I know that I will go to the one that suits me the best.”

Bendtner added: “To be a fantastic player, one must prove that you can score goals. Not just over a season – but always.”

“I have not won anything yet, and I have not been top-scorer. But when I am people will be talking about myself in a different way.

“I hope that I will be a fantastic football player and that everyone will talk about me as one of the best strikers in the world.”

Berg, those quotes came from an interview he did with a Norwegian paper and yes, he said he wants to play for the 2 biggest clubs in Spain.

AW seems incapable if instilling any kind of loyalty to our club in these young players — quite the opposite of what he envisioned with this youth project.

Highlights of Holland v mexico and 2 goals from RvP. The second was brilliant. The first was a good pass from Van der Vaart who I would like to see in an Arsenal shirt, especially if Cesc leaves.

While we are in debt (which is looking quite healty now anyway) Arsenal will always use it I guess to keep figure such as transfer funds quiet. When you sell a player though I think the manager should have the right to spend that income. Firstly, because the board can never plan for a sale the next summer, so obviously they plan for paying off the Emirates with money from other sources.

I certainly think if Cesc wants to leave it’s about the quality around him at Arsenal as well as wanting to join his true love.

Cheers harper. I’m cant’ say I’m more positive about Cesc today. I just think he has been given some diazapam from Wenger to keep his mind focused at the World Cup.

But then I’ve always thought that’s a load of shit, that Cesc can’t focus on the WC because he doesn’t know about his club future. If you’re professional enough then you get on with the next task regardless. It’s just another way to make it seem as if the world in on his shoulders when it isn’t.

The thing is he hasn’t really proved himself yet, admittedly he scored a couple of goals that saved the season, but he does get paid to do that and to my reckoning he missed a lot more sitters although I haven’t got an issue with that, well not before I read that statement.

I’m not sure whether to be pissed at Fabregas for not truly loving Arsenal Football Club or whether to blame Wenger for lack of ambition in the transfer market.

I’ve actually lost count of how many times Fabregas has carried us over the finish line. How many times has he played through injury to get us a point or three. Unfortunately the players around him have not been good enough to stand besides him.

At the end of each season what do we get? “I believe in the spirit of the team. They have great character. We have what we need and do not necessarily need to buy…” Same bullshit Wengerisms. And then we sell our best player.

If Fab goes to Barcelona then fine. I don’t agree with his decision but let’s take good money and bring in a replacement. Quality for quality.

I think its impossible to have great players who are also fans of the club. That will be only in an ideal world.

Walcott loves Liverpool, Cesc and Arshavin Barca, Denilson and Vela Real Madrid and now this tool saying that in the worst moment possible.

Thats why I like Chamakh a lot, in the interviews he sounds like he loves Arsenal so much. Why I could want in Arsenal one of the best strikers in the world, Dzeko, if after two great years he will be crying to let him go to Milan.

I think we all should be ashamed of ourselves drawing conclusions on cesc’s loyalty to arsenal.
The boy played with a broken leg in the first leg for us against Barca. He single handedly beat the Spurs in our first encounter this season. Beating Milan at the San Siro, making a mockery out of Madrid’s midfield in 2006, that was all cesc.

It is a total embarrassment how we seem to forget all his wonders over the years over some transfer rumor. Until the transfer is confirmed, we should all stop crying and moaning and support our club captain rather than be giving a “good riddance”.

Also, I am sick of how we ship our heros like trash when they start under-performing or start even considering other pastures. If they go, give them a hero’s send off. At least Man United has the decency to retire them in their colors.

Henry,Freddie,Viera,Pires,Kolo,Silva,Lauren, Jens, we practically shipped the entire Invincibles squad besides Bergkamp. And then we want players to be loyal to our club?

And then we give captain’s armbands to players who transfer from Chelsea and even Man U for certain games? Is this a joke?

If Cesc goes, can all of us please stop pretending like its the first time as we have sent players like Anelka at tender ages away before.

I know how to keep cesc for the next 4 years

It just occurred to me, that why dont arsenal offer cesc a loan deal for a year to 6 months, with a view to buying him for £40 million. I think cesc would see that the grass is not always greener on the otherside 6 months of bench warming would make him miss arsenal so much and make him fall out of love with barca and then he can save face because if we seel him there is no way he can come back he has too much pride for that , I have a feeling moving to barca will be a big mistake for cesc

I hear you goonergooner, and I’ve not been to hard on Cesc. I was talking more about how I fear for him that going to Barca this year might not be the right move for him. Gab Marcotti wrote a good piece in The Times about it.

But still, this frustration over Cesc for me is signing a long contract and then clearly wanting out. Or should we praise him for signing it so when Barca do come knocking, they should be expected to pay hard cash? I don’t believe in either. Both are false and misleading which is worse than getting no money for the player.

I have not forgotten his heroics this season and in other season though, and so we shouldn’t

Talk about the way forward for Arsenal football and the supporters. Assume he is gone and discuss ways we can rebuild the team for next season. Remember in another two weeks worldcup commence and shortly after the worldcup, a new season starts knocking at the door. Therefore i suggest we address solutions and not problems.

Agreed, but if any player should know the plans for our future/ the plans for rebuilding the squad in terms of numbers, ‘maybe’ ages of possible targets, and ‘maybe’ their positions, it should be Cesc.

I clearly remember him in January asking for additional help because of our injuries but someone up there (Wenger, the Board, who knows…) decided that we were great as we were (ULTIMATELY WRONG AND A DEVASTATING DECISION FOR THE SEASON – just being frank).

If Cesc doesn’t believe in the reassurances, its hard for me to believe too because even with all thats happening, I thinks he’s a bit too smart to accept a probable ‘second-fiddle’, 3rd, 4th or 5th dominance (in terms of attacking hub => Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, ‘Alves’, ‘Pedro”, ‘Ibrahimovic’…) unless he’s absolutely lost confidence in the project!
