How Do We Fill Those Empty Seats?/Danny Fiszman

emiratesempty

Following my Wednesday blog, here are some personal thoughts about filling the empty seats at the Grove.

My working assumption is that the club is being truthful in announcing almost universal sell-outs for our home matches. I can’t see what the benefit would be in telling little porkies, except for a possible long-term effect on season ticket sales. One of the reasons Gooners buy season tickets is how difficult it is to get tickets for the biggest games. If the word got out that tickets were easily obtainable match by match the demand for season tickets might slacken considerably.

It is only in recent times that tickets have been so hard to come by. We only sold out the occasional match right up to the ground going all-seater. During the rebuilding process the capacity was restricted to around 24,000 yet by no means every match was a sell-out, even though we were the reigning champions. When the ground completely re-opened at its final capacity of 38,000 there were a large number of games in the 1994/5 season that didn’t sell out.

We only reached regular full sell-outs in 1997/8.We haven’t looked back since in terms of attendance, reaching heights at the Grove that weren’t even scaled in the post Second World War football attendance boom. As recently as 1985/6 our average was as low as 23,824. We have almost twice that number of season ticket holders now.

Assuming the club is factually correct in announcing sell-outs on tickets sold, then the empty seats by definition are either season tickets not turning up and not passing their seats on informally or via the club Ticket Exchange (TX); or matchday ticket holders who can’t make it and don’t pass their tickets on informally. This will include officially recognised Arsenal supporters’ clubs who don’t sell all the tickets they request for a game.

We can all see that the problem is worse for less important games and/or games against less glamorous opponents. Chief executive Ivan Gazidis recognised the problem in answer to a question at the recent Arsenal Supporters’ Trust meeting. He said he sometimes felt embarrassed when a 60,000 plus crowd is announced when there are clearly a significant number of empty seats.

How can this be addressed? I think in a number of ways. Firstly supporters’ clubs. If they can’t move all their tickets to their members, they should be given a cut-off date by which they can notify the club electronically which seats they have that remain unsold. These can then be offered on the TX with the appropriate supporters’ club getting a refund if they’re sold on.

Those individuals holding matchday tickets also need to have access to the TX opened up to them. It should be easy enough to send the appropriate refund to them electronically. Remember also that not all home League matches in the last season sold out to silver and red members. This number will include a small number of tickets sold on a general sale.

Then there is the problem of those who can’t attend at very short notice for work, family or other reasons like illness. The club needs to do some thinking about how such seats can be effectively and efficiently re-cycled. One thing that would definitely help would be the ability to pass on such seats electronically to a friend or family member without having to pass on and retrieve the entry card. This would probably require the club to issue either a paper ticket or additional entry card(s) that could be electronically activated for particular matches. As a start platinum and gold members should be enabled to pass on their seat if they can’t use it for a particular match to a nominated silver or red member.

To incentivise platinum and gold members to re-cycle their seats when they can’t use them, the club might give some sort of enhanced priority to platinum/gold members for cup final tickets for a perfect attendance record, whether personally or via TX.

The whole issue of empty seats needs to be looked at in fine detail by the club in consultation with the Arsenal Football Supporters’ Club, Arsenal Independent Supporters’ Association and the provincial/overseas supporters’ clubs. I’m sure with a bit of ingenuity and drive we can do better than we are at the moment. What none of us want to do is help the ticket touts in any way so that has to be a consideration.

Memo to Arsenal: let’s talk.

Whilst I’m on the subject of attendances, in North American professional sports it’s pretty standard practice to announce both the tickets sold AND the actual attendance, sometimes by announcing the number of so-called “no shows”. Doing this at Arsenal would be good practice in terms of transparency and held span the current credibility gap.

Finally, Danny Fiszman. Word reaches me that his cancer may be far more life-threatening than was first thought when it was originally diagnosed. This adds another level of uncertainty to the already unclear future ownership of Arsenal. Simply on a human basis I wouldn’t wish cancer on my worst enemy. Whatever my doubts about Danny’s custodianship of the slice of Arsenal that he owns and his future plans for his stake, I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Keep the faith!

One of the problems with TX is that the fixture has to sell out before it becomes available to resell on the exchange. So the likes of Blackburn at home (or whatever) won’t even allow ST holders to put their tickets up for resale.

With regards to last minute activations, etc. I booked a ticket for Porto at home at about 2pm on the day of the match and my card activated fine – so can’t see why ticket sales can’t realistically continue online up until a few hours before kick-off.

The re-buidling of Highbury was during 1992-93 (North Bank) and the first couple of months of 1993-94, we were reigning Champions neither time.

The season ticket waiting list is also huge.

The main problem is the club has already sold the ticket, been paid for the ticket, and only takes a cost handling fee to sell on the TX. Call me slow, but what’s in it for the club to put more effort in to selling the ticket for a second time. The more Silver and Red members that go to MORE matches, the more likely they are NOT to jump at tickes, when they become available.
Whilst those seats remain empty and paid for demand by Red and Silver members stays high, as tickets are difficult to come by. Not much of a reason for the club to start busting thier balls over this !!!!!

I have a novel idea – how about Arsenal try buying some proper ballers, you know some world class players who people would actually turn up to watch play? Or should I be priviledged that I pay a grand a year to watch the best paid collection of spineless lazy arrogant babies in the league?

From watching Henry, Bergkamp, Overmars, Pires, Vieira, Petit, etc to watching Bendtner, Eboue, Diaby, Denilson and Almunia.

The club is treating the fans like a bunch of suckers, using our loyalty and love for the club to serve up dross knowing we have no choice but to suffer it.

I will pray that this Summer is the summer Wenger puts this right, but I will not hold my breath.

If no proper ballers have come in by end of June, there will be some mad protests at the Emirates Cup – thats for damn sure.

Rodellaga LOL. So much for all the bullshit by the board and wenger years before the new stadium was built. They kept saying we need to move out of highbury so we can compete with Real madrid, man utc etc etc for the ebst players in the world. Now what? We getting free transfers, players wanting to leave, and being linked with shite strikers from wigan. Fucking hell wtf is exactly going on at Arsenal. Bunch of liars and thieves, lining their own pockets and boosting their share prices and then trying to sell for multi millions of pounds.

Fuck Wenger, and fuck the Board
    Give me highbury back.

I am sure voluntary bodies who work for the good of the fans and not the main shareholders, could step in here. If the voluntary body is advised in good time that a ticketholder cannot attend, then that seat could be passed on. I am assuming the voluntary body has a waiting list of “desparate” fans. An Estate Agent has a house for sale his/her waiting list is circularised.
Good on you Vic, keep up your free voluntary help. Ta gu guera The Arsenal! Think Aztec, think Inca, who is likely to complain!

    Arsenal have world class players.

We have 2 great full backs, both arguably in the top 10 in their position in the world.

We have a world class centre forward in Van Persie, a world class winger in Arshavin, a world class midfielder in Fabregas and (imo) Song and then a world clas CB in Verm.

Out of a starting line up of 11, with our strongest team, we can field 7 world class players, several growing in potential players and a few makeweights that aren’t amazing but do the job, and that has nearly always been the case.

You can happily stop paying that money, I’d be more than happy to take your place.

LOL @ Dan, you gotta be kidding me, the way you are spending like water, you will NEVER have a new stadium, you keep on chatting about it, but WHERE IS IT??!! oh and BTW you are more likely to follow portsmouth than Arsenal in financial terms with old droopy d at the helm, the guy is a tax evading assest killing criminal. suits your lot down to the ground!!

Good luck with your CL qualifying i think you might need it, and if you DO qualify i just KNOW that your EPL will suffer so you will not hit your “dizzying heights of 4th” again because once you lose the spot Mancity will take it off you and you will never get a hint of the big time ever again………..i reckon by the year 3000 (if you are still in business you might get a chance of the CL again who knows you might win the premiership maybe about 1 time in that 1000 years too LOLOLOLOLOLOL PATHETIC!!

i look through arsenal blogs alot… mainly hearing all the crap that comes with buying players but Brett’s comment was one of those one in a million that gives me hope for the future of arsenal.

Instead of moaning you support the club! we all know that there are some things that we dont agree with but all this constant doom mongering isnt gonna do anyone any good!

plus Henry, Pires, Bergkamp and even Viera came from obscurity! Arsene and Arsenal made them whether you like it or not! they were given a chance to play and they stepped up!
listing our best players from a golden age against arguably our worst in a time where weve struggled with debt is hardly fair.

although somethings got to be done about players wanting out… i would like to see wenger finally put his foot down!

The reason that Arsenal record/announce the number of sales of tickets rather than bums on seats at the game is (believe it or not) purely down to advertising revenue! The club can charge more money to any advertiser by selling the audience as 60,000 rather than 55,000 (over 20 home games that is an increased market of 100,000 people theoretically). When compared to Chelsea or Spurs that increase in audience catchment of 70%! So if our rates were 25% higher than Chelsea or Spurs…where would you place YOUR advert?

You are very delusional if you think Spuds are going to finish in the top 4 again this century. That was a total one off and I can’t see it happening again. When you build a new stdium you will not be able to fill it anyway, you advertise premiership matches in the standard and thats in a shit stadium thatdoesn’t even hold 40,000.Anyway Spuds would be the first team that Arry has been involved with that hasn’t gone bust well not until the stadium debt takes you over.Tottenham shit area shit team.Out of CL qualifying 1st time as well.

the whole thing is a mess. i have been on the season ticket waiting list for god knows how long and can’t get one. i have already been offered the use of 3 season tickets by holders that either dont want to go or cant afford it any more. all the people i go with are on borrowed season tickets. the club needs to find a system to deal with this so the people that want season tickets and want to go can get them. maybe a combination of putting pictures on the season tickets and checking them on the way in, plus maybe a season ticket holiday for those who cant make it any one season??

i have a feeling this situation could get a lot worse next season as i know many season ticket holders who are refusing to renew. i love these people that come on blogs and say “i’ll have your ticket”
well im not renewing my 4 tickets and have offered them on this site for 2 weeks now. has anybody come back to me? why is that? maybe when push comes to shove and they have to fork out £1200 they realise they cant afford it and it isnt value for money.

good on you. if you refuse to renew and there aren’t enough people like me to take them up then maybe the club will have a rethink and knock the prices down. renewing unwanted tickets then passing them on is just holding the prices up and creating this huge waiting list that the club can hold us to ransom with.

While I feel sorry for people on waiting list, it is a myth that you cannot give your season tickets to anyone else. Putting photo id would prove it wasn’t you gaining entry, it wouldn’t prove that money had passed hands to get the ticket. I have two season tickets in my name, I couldn’t sit in both seats !!!
I have never left an empty seat in my 15 years as a season ticket holder. What kind of person leaves £50 empty. There are 2 seats in front of me that are regulary empty. Have these people got too much money ?

i just wanted to give somebody the chance to jump the queue. i have had a season ticket for 35 years and have to be honest – it aint the same these days – at highbury i felt like a fan, here i feel like a customer who is taken for granted.
im also fed up with lining the boards pockets, our money should be invested in the team not clearing the whole debt so quickly so that they can sell their shares for a increased value.
another gripe is if the club now deem the FA cup as irrelevant why should they be included in the season ticket. they should be as the carling cup tickets are, damned if im gonna pay £50 to watch when the club dont take it seriously

Anyway,i found myself in the position of trying to give my ticket away at ‘face’ at very short notice. I did, shall we say thru a friend of a friend and all i can say is that he got carried away and got booted out. The rest is history .. i got correspondence from arsenal asking for the explanation and name of 3rd party. I had no reasonable answer and hoped the matter would be dropped as i couldn’t bring myself to dob.It did not go away- I psychologically begged, borrowed and stole to keep as i was then written to be told my ticket would be cancelled forthwith.

My goodwill expired from that day onwards. However, to have the opportunity to pass my ticket on to another person officially at short notice bearing in mind how much technology we have these days would be satisfying. I have a season ticket but i am of the mind that i have no ownership except the opportunity to attend. However, I am not keen on experiencing thos wrath again as I was told in no uncertain terms that if i did not play ball it was end of.. and with ten or games left on my ticket, i’v heard better news. My work takes me all around England and i have stayed many a B & B. Thanks for the more lucid comments. I shall pass over the deranged ones!

To respond to some of the points. I confess I hadn’t thought about the advertising point, but I would have thought that the advertisers are more sophisticated and clued up these days that just looking for mere “eye-balls” although there’s no point in advertising to nobody of course!

I think the club does have a vested interest in filling the seats they’ve already sold. Aside from anything else more bodies generates more revenue in sales of programmes, swag in the shops, pies, beer, etc.

I’m not so convinced that the waiting list is quite as long as its made out to be. I’m sue it’s still there but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a bigger “churn rate” of season ticket holders this close season than last (about 2,500 gave up last season).

I also don’t know what the rewnewal rate for centre block Club has been (renewal for Club is much earler than for general admission).
