Wenger Ready To Splash The Cash

ArseneWenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, criticised by fans after his young side failed to win a trophy since 2005, is to splash out £30million on building a squad to end the drought.

Wenger will make the club’s biggest impact on the summer transfer market for more than a decade, with Everton defender Phil Jagielka the latest target, along with Chelsea’s England midfielder Joe Cole, Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer and Lorient defender Laurent Koscielny.

Wenger is finally ready to make major signings after almost 10 years of being constrained by the club’s move to the Emirates Stadium.

Driving force: Arsene Wenger wants Everton’s Phil Jagielka to steer his Arsenal defence next season

And Everton centre-half Jagielka, controversially left out of Fabio Capello’s 30-man preparation squad for the World Cup finals, is the latest player to be targeted by the Frenchman, although Everton manager David Moyes will fight to keep the 27-year-old defender at Goodison Park.

But Arsenal now appear to be confident of adding Cole and Schwarzer to the squad after the World Cup finals, even though negotiations with Cole’s representatives have yet to reach a conclusion.

Safe hands: Wenger wants Australia keeper Mark Schwarzer

Fulham have rejected an initial inquiry for Schwarzer, but the Australian goalkeeper has only one year left on his contract at Craven Cottage and, at the age of 37, he will want to seize his last chance to play Champions League football.

Arsenal remain in talks for centre-half Koscielny but, with William Gallas out of contract and leaving the club, they are committed to signing another experienced Premier League defender.

Jagielka is their first choice and Wenger has been cleared to spend, with around £30m at his disposal plus any more he receives if Cesc Fabregas leaves for Barcelona.

Arsenal have rarely been major players in the summer transfer market since committing to building the Emirates Stadium 10 years ago, a project completed in 2006 at the cost of £380m.

But the club made £45.5m profit last year, making them one of the few in the Premier League to enjoy a substantial return.

Their financial outlook is much brighter than Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea, with more profits expected this year as stadium debts fall.

we need trophies wether we buy top quality proven players or the cheap unknown gem which wenger normally finds , we needs experience, we need defenders , we need a class keeper and top class midfielders ,what dont we need? wenger may need 2 spend more than 30m this summer

Wenger simply needs to buy this summer and need to buy smart.4 centre backs have already left n its gettin worser for gunners as far as defence is concerned. We need to buy class CB’s and a goal keeper.I doubt wenger would even think of buying a mid fielder, specially if we actually have signed Joe Cole.

    Talk is cheap with Wenger.

When he presents the players with their names on a shirt, that’s when we’ll believe that he has bought players.

Almost every arsenal fan bleats about the lack of signings which is fair, at the same time though they should look at the terrific new stadium their team plays in and maybe try to understand the costs involved in building something like that. With investment comes constraint on other departments. So long as the long term future of arsenal looks bright and the potential to win trophies is there im more than happy to continue supporting my team.

£30m would more-or-less secure a very bright future. Last season we just missed out through lack of depth.

Whether Arsene spends that is another story. One thing is for sure, the current squad just isn’t strong enough to compete in all the major competitions.

Sooner or later he’ll have to drop his “Pound Stretchers” mentality if he’s to achieve the Champion’s League and league double. (FA would be nice too.)

Thomas Vermaelen for captain, anyone? I think Cesc has lost that privilege… if he stays.

Is this REALLY the same blog that, only last week, reported the ‘exlusive’ that Cole had signed and that it was a done deal (according to ‘trusted sources’)?? How can a blog be commendable if different stories have contrasting ‘facts’ from seemingly so little information? How about stop writing this rubbish and come up with something with a bit of substance that will get people talking and spark debate – if it’s hits that you are after.

What are the contrasting facts? Insider said Cole would sign and nothing in this blog says differently.

But spot on that it’s hits the site is after, that’s half the point right?

As for substance there are plenty of writers on Insider. A member of the supporter trust, season ticket holders running back to the 70s and young writers with new opinions.

What more substance is needed than telling you Joe Cole WILL sign? Where is your source telling you he isn’t? Therefore, where is YOUR substance?

In fairness the Cole deal is virtually “done”.The quality of transfer reporting in the media is pathetic and several papers were running stories last week that arsenal were about to challenge Spurs. It appears that things have moved way beyond this.
Wenger needs around 5 quality signings but judge him by the start of the season or the end of the window.Joe Cole is at the World Cup.Little will happen until England return home

Why should I need substance or a source? If I had that, I would not be reading the blogs to find this information, would I? All I’m saying is a little consistency wouldn’t go amiss.

“But Arsenal now appear to be confident of adding Cole…”

Appear to be confident? That’s a bit different to saying he is definitely signing.

And yes, I do agree there are often some really good pieces on here, so I take back any generalisation :)

A distinction should be made between Arsenal Holdings and Arsenal FC. A distinction should be made between Arsenal FC and Arsenal Jersey.
Sloppy reporting can only mislead readers of blogs like this.
The facts are as stated in the Annual Report 2009 for Arsenal Holdings. The 2010 Report is eagerly awaited.

To be fair, I think I’d rather stick with Almunia… just about…

In my opinion, all those prospects are rubbish.

Jagielka is good but the same height of Vermaelen so we will have two similar defeners liks Gallas/Vermaelen that all the big strikers will kill in the air.

Koscielny, exactly the same reasons than Jagielka.

Schwarzer is not so much better than Almunia and if the reason to buy him is because Arsene wants a good keeper until Scezny is ready, does he will be ready in 2 years?

Im only agree with Joe Cole.

We need a defender who can compliment T.V. someone very tall, someone who stays in his area instead of someone very combative like T.V. Someone like Mertesacker.

We need a very very good keeper who is already better than our 2 keepers together.

And finally we need a DM/CD, someone to fight with Song for that position but that also can play in Central Defence without a problem. Someone like Toulalan, Mbia, Westermann etc etc

Bur Arsene knows best and if he bring someone that I never heard before, Im sure he/they will be good like last season with T.V.

Van Persie. Vermaelen however is vice-captain for sure. Too early in his Arsenal career to be captain.

Fuck off back to Barca Cesc.

Arsenal are only linked with two players so far today, Gregory Van de Wiel and Jan Vertonghan, both “young” defenders from Ajax.

    Cheap options?

    Wenger’s next gems?

I want Cesc to stay because we will struggle to replace him this year. Agree a new captain would be good (if Cesc does stay) and Vermaelen would be my pick although RVP is a contender. but his injury record is so poor that he can’t expect to be captain until he goes a full season without being injured for more than a few games.
