The Fabregas Saga…Part 235

Cesc-Fabregas_1673048

by GEORGE PEACE Some very interesting words from Arsčne Wenger have surfaced recently. Ever since the ‘news’ broke that our captain Cesc Fabregas had informed our manager that he ‘wanted to leave Arsenal’, the widely accepted belief is that he’ll be a Catalan by the time The Gunners kick off the 10/11 season.

Trying, as I do, to winch myself from the usual media maelstroms, and view the news as objectively as possible – I’ve always been of the opinion that Fabregas will be here for at least one more season before going back home.

There was never been any solid justification to the claims that Fabregas had asked to leave, nor did he hand in a transfer request. When first questioned publicly, Cesc said nothing that suggested he was trying to leave, simply telling us that he’d had a brilliant chat with Arsčne Wenger and was happily leaving everything in his manager’s hands. Then, an insultingly low offer was tabled by Barcelona – only to be met by the Arsenal board by the bureaucrat’s version of ‘bog off’.

Sorry for sounding like Rafa Benitez here, but those are the facts. In actuality there’s very little information that suggests a deal for Cesc is anywhere close to being done. Combine that with what Arsčne Wenger has said in his latest interview and the prospect of Fabregas remaining a Gunner (for the time-being at least) seems to become a plausible prospect.

So, here’s the reason why you probably clicked on this article, here is what Arsčne said when a Sky reporter asked the inevitable. Regarding Fabregas, Wenger said: “What’s important is that he comes back [from South Africa] to Arsenal, he has a great desire to do well for the club. We want to keep our best players, that is my huge determination. I’ve built this team for years; from 16 to 17 years of age for most of the players, and we want to continue to work with them because we feel we are very close [and want] to strengthen the team in a very strong way.”

That same report went on to say that Wenger believed the odds of Fabregas remaining at Arsenal to be around 80%.

Personally, I’m much more inclined to listen to what Arsčne Wenger says in a 60 second interview, than to what is being sensationalized by over-stimulated tabloids and under-paid bloggers. Am I going too far by ‘expecting’ Fabregas to still be leading the line next season?

I realise some cynics will lambaste me for listening to what Arsenal representatives have to say. There is ofcourse the possibility that all this ‘banter’ among Arsenal, Barça and Cesc, is indeed just a front to make fans think, that when Cesc inevitably leaves, we tried our damndest to hold onto the lad. The idea that a deal has already been put in place and everyone’s just playing out a publicity drama and chuckling when the camera’s off.

Either is arguably possible. But I happen to lean on the side of what our club is saying. I find it easier to believe that our club is unwilling to flog its captain, and that he’s still enjoying life in North London, than the idea that we’re a feeder club with purely financial motives.

At the risk of exuding a little more optimism than many Gunners feel comfortable with – I’ll end with the recent reports that quote the in-demand centre-half Laurent Koscielny as saying he “absolutely wants to join Arsenal”. We’ve supposedly already had an offer rejected by Lorient who are retorting by demanding a much more substantial fee.

A player reportedly wanting a move to a more successful club, but his current employers don’t want to sell him on yet? This scenario feels oddly familiar…

I too read the Wenger comments, although I don’t recall the 80% remark. I would like to believe Fabregas will remain at Arsenal, providing his heart and soul not just his body are in North London. If there is any doubt then the club should take anything over £40 million and move on.

We will see what Cesc’s true intentions are after the WC, so I will wait until then before thinking about it anymore.

Plus, if Yaya is sold to City for a good bit of cash, then we will see how deep Barca is willing to tempt us.

Following on from our mini debate yesterday there is still confusion surrounding Cesc, like what does he have to leave Arsene to decide on?

As I said yesterday, I hope too that he’s staying but I stand by what I said and JIN obviously feels the same that he has to want to be in London not Crapelona. I’m not shooting him down, the guy is magic and has always given more than 100% but this is now and AFC is more important than ANY player.

From the 9th to 17th July 2010, Campus II will be held in Tordera, a town not to far from Arenys de Mar, Catalonia. This will be the second campus Cesc has held for “tiki-taki” football. This Campus will be a gesture of solidarity with SOS Children’s Villages. The sister of Cesc, Carlota is an Assistant Director. About 20 British children will take part.
Looking into a crystal ball, under no circumstances will Cesc have this Campus II disturbed. By what, may you ask? Who wants a pack of raving, drunken and stupid British reporters lurking in the undergrowth and trees surrounding the venue. The photographers putting a large number of children at risk, from their stupid antics.
Cesc future will be decided before the 9th July 2010. The ages of the children are from 7 to 15 years of age.
The mission statement is “We want everybody to have a good time”

I saw those comments from AW.

For me, it has been clear from the moment that Arsenal issued a public statement on the official site that the club had no intention to negotiate a deal for Cesc. So that has never been a question for me – that is, I have never doubted that Barca are exaggerating or flat out lying when they imply that a deal has supposedly already been done or that it’s just a matter of time.

Arsenal’s statement could not have been firmer or clearer on the matter. They have no intention of even considering any offers.

But those quotes from Arsene (and Cesc’s comments as well) IN NO WAY refute the original story that Cesc had a mtg with Arsene asking to leave. Or at least, broaching to AW the possibility of him leaving this season. That was also confirmed with his press conference the week before in which he said that he wanted his future sorted before the wc and the only club he’d go to would be Barca. Why, all of a sudden and out of the blue, would he say he wanted his future sorted unless something was going on? We all thought his future was already sorted, at least for now.

Cesc’s later comments — re his conversation with AW — sounded to me as
if he and AW came to some sort of understanding. Maybe it was something like either AW would deal with Barca for a damned good price (certainly higher than what they offered) or AW had asked Cesc to stay for one more season and promised he’d let him go next summer. Or something.

So right now I do believe Cesc will stay and the he will give his all for us because he loves Arsene and Arsenal. But I also believe he will be gone next summer.

The President-elect of FC Barcelona is now in South Africa. As a matter of courtesy the Alsatian “cuandopaso” will deign (not Darren Dein) to meet Sr. Rosall.
The language used by the Barça fans to describe Mr Wenger, is not for the faint-hearted.
The “seny” of Cesc must be addressed and resolved sooner tather than later.

One thing is certain, between now and the start of the season the news media and the Internet will be awash with speculation about Fabregas.

Arsenal could not have been clearer in their statement that he was not for sale. Unfortunately, Barcelona appear equally determined to pursue the matter despite that statement.

Perhaps now that a new president has been elected at Barcelona their intentions may be clarified.

Are Barcelona an honourable club? If so they should announce publicly that they accept and respect Arsenal’s decision not to sell the player and allow him to concentrate on Spain’s faltering World Cup bid.

I may be an old cynic so I’m not going to be holding my breath.

Sky reported that 80% remark, it wasn’t actually verbalised live by Wenger – so it’s worth taking with a pinch of salt!

I agree with you and John – if his heart’s not in it, then I wouldn’t want him playing here either. I know he wants to one-day go back to Barcelona & I wouldn’t want to deny him that; but my main point is that I believe he would be happy and committed to completing another season with us. After all, he’s not the sort of player who would amble around the pitch sulking like a certain dreadlocked ‘BBC pundit’. :-*

the thing that really makes me laugh over all this is barce’s stance….we want him he wants us there for he will come as we are barce and we get what we want and at a cheap price too…the way they have paraded this to the media and virtually conducted there negoiations through them is disgusting…i have heard every barce player say he has barce in his blood and they want him there..the coaches, board members, presidential candidates they’ve all had their say…when in actuality ours is fuck off! we won’t even listen to an offer…their playing a silly game all by themselves to impress the fans during election time and quite frankly the way they have conducted themselves and this whole affair makes my toes curl and my skin crawl….one question, who the fuck do you think you are! and another who the fuck do you think we are! how they have not landed in trouble with fifa for tapping up is beyond me, most blatant case of it in years and my opinion of barce which used to be quite high is now rock bottom, they have sunk even lower than madrid usually do….when will these spanish clubs stop looking at arsenal as a feeder club and have some bloody manners put on them by someone in high authority…oh wait i forgot everything is about money now right! hence the reason no club in the world apart from barce and madrid can get the kind of bank loans they need for their stupidly high transfers which are slowly killing the game….we’re not american football, basketball, or baseball, and our sport isn’t about merchandising for profit or turning your club into the right franchise machine….how long will we all put up with this crap which started in the 90′s….football is not business, players aren’t cash cows and neither are the fans!!! football needs a revolution and the weeds need pulling out of the game once and for all!! rant over….phew!

Football is not only business but big business.

Players may not be cash cows but the poor old football fan certainly is.

As an example fans are expected to fork out ridiculous sums of money for totally naff replica kits every season… and they do so!

The only difference this year, unlike previous years is that Fabregas has not made the statement “I am happy and committed at Arsenal and do not intend to leave”

And that is why I believe that regretfully he will not be here next year.

If he’s only going to stay for one more year is there any point in keeping him? We’ll get less money for him and delay rebuilding a team/style.
