Do Arsenal fans care about England?

roney4

By JAMES CURTIS Another ball squirms away. Another poor piece of control. Rooney puffs his cheeks. Where have I seen that before? Think back to England’s World Cup warm up match against Mexico on May 25th, where you will recall Rooney blowing hot and rolling his eyes when Theo Walcott passed the ball too late. Rooney was offside and the chance was lost. Rooney didn’t look at Walcott, didn’t even acknowledge him. A week later Walcott was left out of the England squad. Nothing had changed last night, just on the occasion, Rooney shunted not one player but the whole team. And then the nation. But as Arsenal fans, do we really care?

Watching England last night was enough to turn a recovered heroin addict back to a life of drug-bent compulsion, the football was that frustrating. At the time I felt I needed some form of medication myself to ease the grappling irritation of such a grim performance. In the heat of the moment I cared. Verbal abuse was hurled at the television, then in the direction of our football illiterate female company, and then when there was nobody left to aim at, swear words of all kinds just filled the room at random.

Three St George’s flags flap outside our house, and to note, all were hoisted by the Arsenal side of the family, not the West Ham fraction. Born and bred in Barking and Dagenham, I know all about what it means to be a proud national. Nowhere flies the colours higher than Bobby Moore’s home town. At one stage in the first-half against Algeria Steven Gerrard sprayed a ball out left to Ashley Cole, who got free from his opponent and burst into the penalty area. Without knowing it I had cried out “Go on Ash”, as if this player who I insulted all season at Chelsea was now a personal friend of mine.

Today though it is quite amusing to wake up and hear the people’s castigation of England, knowing it had nothing to do with Arsenal. How funny to see Wayne Rooney change overnight from the Twenty-first Century St George into the anti-Christ of our national sport. Rooney will feel the backlash for his sarcastic criticism of those England fans who booed the team off the pitch inside Green Point Stadium. After all, nobody questions an English football fan. Rooney might have many privileges, immunities and exemptions, but that just isn’t one of them.

So do I care about England or not? In the heat of battle I did, I was red with rage; a ghastly beast of profanity far from the English gent those poor girls once thought I was. Maybe I was a bigger England fan supporting dreaded Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham players, than Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham fans themselves. I was equal at least. The bigger problem is that Arsenal fans might feel this tournament has nothing to do with them, as they are told by the superpatriot who takes pleasure in this reality. This could well be the reason for my own pleasure then when the superpatriot’s team does badly.

If I am to be this outsider though, well at least my vantage point allows me to see more clearly where things have gone wrong for England. Where the diehard might fall for the soppy ‘we believe in you England’ fairytale prattle, the Arsenal fan most likely doesn’t. Terry Venables singing things like “please let my dream come true” might work for the Tottenham fan, but to me it’s just sloppy Disney romance. Maybe this makes me unpatriotic. Maybe I don’t care.

And then there’s James Cordon, Fabio Capello’s happy-go-lucky disciple. Funny man of the people who shows us how to have a laugh while reminding everyone of the lighter side to football. And the nation sings and dances along to his made-up England hymns and World Cup wall chart, but when it comes down to the nitty-gritty and England lose, then it’s not all nursery rhymes and child games, its anger and destruction. Passing by a well-know devoted England pub today, police tape, a forensic tent and broken benches were the telling sings of fury that England had drawn with Algeria.

One thing the English are good at though is laughing off the bad times. No doubt we’ll soon be making fun of Emile Heskey tripping over the ball and thinking for a second he was Cristiano Ronaldo. I suspect you’ve all heard the joke about having Rob Green for a father being more embarrassing than a male prostitute. If England really want to win a World Cup then I suppose the country needs to be more serious. Stop with the silly shows, the fascination with Crouchy’s robot and somebody please take the microphone off El Tel.

Really though, as an Englishman I think we’d rather keep the gags and revel in another tragic World Cup. Show off the English stiff upper-lip and still turn out for games, win, lose or draw. Isn’t that what makes us the best fans around? My feeling is England like a sad story, and if there’s anything Arsenal fans know about, it’s a sad story. I guess then, we’re not so different me and you, Mr England fan.

Il admit i lost my passion for England, im an life long Gooner and ive found it hard to find my England spark. But can you blame me and my fellow gooners? Since the days of the great back four of Adams and co, we havent really had alot of English players, but when we do eventually start getting English plyers through liken Walcott, Gibbs, Wilshere Gilbert etc, then rest of world as usual catches the i hate arsenal bug and they treat our players like shit and never play them. Capello has made one of the biggest mistakes this year, when he left the man he owed one to and the fastest player in England btw at home. Id love to get the england passion back, but its hard for me when the whole team are nearly yids!

I want England to do well because we’re english but I hate the players so it’s hard to root for them.
You’ve got a bunch of dickheads… just to name a few:

Ashley Cole- does anyone like this piece of sh!t… even chelsea fans?!

John Terry- Scumbag from a scumbag chav family. Mum= thief, dad= drug dealer and then there’s John himself= made fun of 9/11, sell trips around training ground for 10k, his box at wembley for 10k, got a 17 year old to suck him off in his car after training, slept with his best mates childs mother all whilst being married with kids and earning 150k a week. scumbag.

    Carragher- rubbish and slow

    Johnson- can’t defend.

Lennon- actually quite like him but he’s been rubbsih so far. doesn’t seem to want to run and his man…not much point him being there if he’s not going to do that.

Lampard- Has he been selected for the WC?? Haven’t seen him yet.

Gerrard- diving talented player being played on the wing like scholes was because fat frank must start in CM?!!?

Rooney- been uber rubbish, pays 40 year old prostitutes for sex, been really really rubbish.

Heskey- how can he start for england but can’t get near the Villa starting XI??

The sooner Gibbs, Rodwell, Wilshere, A Johnson and Agbonlahor are put into the squad the better.

I only watch EPL because of Arsenal. Dont care about you English or your game. As far as I’m concerned Arsenal havent played the techniqueless, uncreative, hoof-ball shoulder-barging game in the past decade. If they were part of the Cypriot League I’d probably be watching that instead.

Theres a reason Wenger doesnt choose English players. I laugh everytime someone comments about why Wenger doesnt take Englishmen…sorry to say lads, but YOU GUYS ARENT ALL THAT GOOD! :D

But the only reason is so the Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Villa and Sp*rs players will be knackered for the upcoming season.

I’d still prefer Arsenal to win a pre-season friendly than England win the World Cup, though.

No I have no real passion for England

    I am a danish gooner

But I have no real passion for Denmark either

This has to do with lack of quality on the national team and the fact that in my eyes the most interesting games are in PrL and CHL… Nothing is above CHL in quality.

In the view of the majority of fervent Club supporters(if they are honest)the national side becomes a poor second when it comes to interest and/or support. I think this started with the advent of TV and later IT, by which means the Club and information about its people and business became intimately available to the supporter. Plus the fact that 11+ players in the national side of ANY country will NEVER gel the same as a Club side. It just aint possible.

i find it very hard to follow england, i come from mainly irish background and feel ireland just has more culture than england, don’t get me wrong i still support england spent my whole life here and hope they do well but as a gooner i have more passion for arsenal than eng

i have spurs, west ham man utd chelsea fans as friends and sick of people saying arsenal a disgrace having no english players, id rather pick a player on ability than nationality personally. and what english players can we buy? they are all overrated and over priced

but it is hard to support england i want them to do well but if they lose im not as upset as when arsenal lose. maybe its because no afc players in eng squad? and i spend all season hating these players at other clubs hard to fully back them

but i don’t feel arsenal anti english but at times i feel england anti arsenal, within arsenal i feel part of a community couldn’t care less where our players come from (and by the way we have good english players coming through) but if you were to ask me what i would rather england or arsenal to win a major throphy i would have to go with arsenal

At least Denmark have an arsenal player!

Agree that international football on the whole has got really boring and the champions league has the highest quality football. I think that maybe the world cup should have less teams in it so that the defensive rubbish teams who don’t try and win any games don’t spoil it.

As for England – I want them to do well because I’m english but I didn’t really celebrate when they scored against USA, i didn’t get angry or upset for very long after yesterdays performance (like I do when Arsenal don’t play brilliantly!) and the best word to describe my feelings is apathetic. I want England to do well but not enough to get worked up if they don’t.

I’m one of the very few people that contribute to this website who watched England win the World Cup in 1966 and I do care about my national teams performance.

The fact that there are no Arsenal players in the England squad doesn’t lessen my support for the team, nor does it lessen my outright horror at the appalling display put on England against Algeria last night.

I would never normally boo my own team but last night would have been an exception had I been present.

Every player has an off day from time to time, and can be forgiven for that but with the exception of James and Cole for the entire team and substitutes to be “off” on the the same day is unbelievable.

At his after-match interview Capello looked like a bewildered old drunk who had got off the bus in the wrong town, he had no explanation for the teams utter failure or for his own inadequacies or inability to alter either the pattern of play or the attitude of the players.

For this manager the honeymoon is well and truly over and divorce looms large upon the horizon.

Totally depends on whether there are any Arsenal players in the team or not. Lost interest in England for this when they dropped Walcott fro the squad. Euro 96 for example, I was well into them. Went to every game and was as partisan as anyone…that was thanks to having Tone as captain and Seaman the goal-keeping national hero. I couldn’t help thinking England would’ve won it had Sheringham and Anderton not been playing though! I also supported the Dutch in that tournament, thanks to our DB10! Basically, I support the country that has the most gooners playing for them. Since Euro 96, I’ve seen and supported France & Holland in the flesh much more than England. Once Gibbs, Wilshere, Walcott, Lansbury, Aneke, Bartley etc etc form the bulk of the team at the next World Cup I’ll be all over ‘em again! :-)

I have been an Arsenal fan for almost 40 years. I am not English and don’t really care about your national side.

Those who claim Arsenal do not have any English players don’t really follow the club very well. In the Reserves and youth teams, talented English players are plentiful. AW said several years ago that we had to be patient because a crop of English players will be coming up through the youth set up. If we look at those between 16 – 20 years who have either just been introduced to first team football or are about to, in 5 – 6 years, Arsenal will have a large influx of “home-grown” players. Wilshere anyone?

Too bad Platini’s rule doesn’t already apply. Reading about the doping of ManCity makes me sick. I have criticized ManU for paying over the odds but at least they earned the money.

The fact im not enlglish probably helps to. However i am always really really really excited about my own nationatl team. Even though there rarley are any players from my home favourit club in it. It does not matter. Then again the players on our team are nice lads that knows how to behave. not Terry and Cole types.

Not really rooting for England esp after 2 lacklustre performances. I am leaning towards the South American teams (Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay) + Holland at this WC. (I am English btw)

The big ? over England, why Joe Cole has been omitted from the starting line-up for both matches?

Last match, to get that win, (4-1-3-2) formation:

    D.James
    Johnson-Terry-Upson-A.Cole
    Barry
    Lampard-J.Cole-Gerrard
    Rooney-Crouch

    ========================================
    Off topic:
IMO what Arsenal could need in new season 2010/2011:

    GK:
(if from UK) Jaaskelainen (Bolton) – 12 yrs? @ Bolton, sound GK, settled down in UK, retired from international football thus giving his all for club football till our 2 young GKs (Mannone and Szczesny) are ready for No.1

(if overseas) Stekelenburg (Ajax)- good at club level and recently for Holland at WC2010.

    CD/FB/DMC:
(if from UK) S.Taylor (Newcastle) – versatile, can play centre, rightback. age 24yrs – future candidate for England senior team.

(if from overseas) H.Westermann (Schalke 04) – versatile, captain of club, can play CB, DMC, fullbacks. All round abilties includes scoring.

(^^ I would have like both to come)

    Luxury player:
(if from UK) J.Cole (free agent) – creative AMC/winger. Walcott, Vela, Wilshere can learn from his wing play and trickery with ball. The missing spark that could have ignite England at the present WC.

(if from overseas) E.Hazard (Lille) – prized possession for Lille and Belgium national team.

Season 2010/2011 Preferred formation with current team: (4-2-3-1)

    GK: Szczesny
    DEF: Sagna-Djourou-Vermaelen-Clichy
    CM: Song-Fabregas
    AM: Nasri
    Winger/For: van Persie-Arshavin
    ST: Chamakh

Subs: Mannone, Vela, Gibbs, Walcott, Eastmond, Bendtner, Ramsey.

It’s hard to suddenly flip a switch when these low-lifes have been so instrumental in epitomizing everything un-Arsenal – it’s like having half-a-dozen Phil Browns out there.

It makes me cringe that we cannot keep posession. It makes me cringe that Emile Heskey is rated in our Best 11 players. And it makes me cringe that Capello seems to have lost the plot.

I watched the game on Friday and was urging Ashley Cole on, urging Aaron Lennon on, John Terry etc. Players I despise for the way they are at their clubs.

Part of me is glad no Arsenal players are in the squad, as the level is embarrassing. But then I look at the French and see the same thing and they have 4 of our players.
