Emirates Cup – Arsenal vs Celtic

emirates_cup

After making it to the Champions League qualifiers, where they lost to Arsenal, Celtic lost their way in the Scottish League and finished behind rivals Rangers.  After a poor start to the campaign, Neil Lennon replaced Tony Mowbray and was given the job of trying to rescue Celtic.  Celtic finished second to Rangers, 6 points behind, in the SPL in the end and they will be looking to set the record straight this season.

Neil Lennon will look to put last season to bed and concentrate on a good start.  Celtic’s squad has decent depth with some good quality players.  They have however lost keeper Artur Boruc to Fiorentina which will be a big loss.  The keeper has been a crucial member of the Celtic side for a few years and will be sorely missed.

At the back, they do have some former internationals in Andreas Hinkel and Glenn Loovens.  Both provide experience at the back and both their careers have included spells at decent European clubs.  Add to this the tenacity of Scott Brown in the middle of the park and the power of Marc-Antoine Fortune up front and one can see that Celtic have a decent spine to their team.

Lennon has brought in Joe Ledley on a free transfer which may prove to be a very shrewd bit of business.  The Welsh international has been a consistent performer in the Championship for many years and had been touted for a move to the Premiership before signing for Celtic.  He will add quality on the opposite wing to Aidan McGeady, the hugely talented winger who has also been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League.  These two will provide a big threat to many teams this season.

Our Champions League qualifier with Celtic was quite a tasty affair, especially after the hugely controversial penalty that was awarded to the recently departed Eduardo.  I do not expect a similar tough game due to pre season niceties but Celtic will no doubt be committed and hope to shake their position of underdog and come away with a win.  Football wise, they do not match up to the quality of Arsenal but they will look to sit deep and frustrate Arsenal before using their pace out wide to cause problems on the break.

An early goal would definitely force Celtic to come out and play which may leave space at the back to exploit.  Expect Wenger to mix and match his sides over the weekend and we may well see a weaker side take the field on Sunday, what with AC Milan on Saturday being the greater test for the squad.

I am anticipating a different type of game to the one on Saturday, but one that will be equally intriguing.  Celtic will provide a different type of test, one more similar to a few teams in the Premier League who will also come to the Emirates hoping to stifle Arsenal’s rhythm.  It will be a good test to see how we cope with a well organised and deep lying defence.

An excellent blog refreshingly free of arrogance and with a fair appraisal of Celtic. However I agree with 1888 Bhoy. We are at sixes and sevens in defence and for facing an explosively attacking team like Arsenal I may be watching this game between my fingers!

I think our attack is better than our defence.Thought we where unlucky not to beat lyon on sat if big fortune could just put it away i think we would have our self a player.Think arsenal will be a differant kettle of fish tho.

Wenger believes it is now up to Fabregas to put a stop to the Barcelona saga and can do so at the Members day on Thursday by coming out (though not, of course, in a gay way).

Will he do so? We’ll just have to wait and see!!

I’m looking forward to this evenings match in particular to see the side Arsene will put out. I can’t really see too many of yesterday’s starting eleven being picked today.

We really must not send Jack Wilshire out on loan again, I thought he was brilliant yesterday and we could do with his all action style in the first team squad where his presence will allow Aaron Ramsey the time to recover without the need to be rushed back too soon. (When fully fit he will be like a new signing) Now where have I heard that before? :-*

Marouane Chamakh could soon become a firm favourite, at The Emirates, his combination of ball skills and athleticism allied to his enthusiasm should place him above Bendtner in the pecking order.

I’ll reserve judgement on Laurent Koscielny for now, although he looks comfortable on the ball and has pace I think he may need to take a Charles Atlas body-building course or risk having sand kicked in his face at places like Bolton and Blackburn. For those of you too young to remember Charles Atlas just Google the name.

Celtic have a life and tough game this week to stay in the Champions League. Big, Big money if Celtic can cut the mustard against Braga.
So Arsenal Reserves (Underhill Stadium) against Celtic Reserves (Lennoxtown and any stadium south of Hadrian’s wall).
    Be warned.
JIN, Fabregas met with AW on last Friday. According to Cesc’s sister budding reporters’ splurge, the “seny” is still the “ying” and yang” for Cesc. JIN having been recently in China, please be free to correct my non-existent Mandarin.

    Notoverthehill,

Wouldn’t dream of correcting anybody’s Mandarin, having spent just a month in China all my attempts at speaking the language were frustrated by being addressed in perfect English by almost everyone I met, including hotel staff shop assistants and even the table clearer in MacDonalds in Beijing.

If they did meet on Friday maybe that explains why Wenger is so confident that Fabregas will stay.

I was very impressed by Frimpong and I don’t no why everyone keeps saying hes the next Song. This guy will be better than Song he already looks a all round better footballer, including being stronger and quicker I fully expect him to break into the first team this season. Chamakh looks very exciting seems like hes got all the ingredients to become a great Arsenal player but Wat will AW do with RVP? the system AW is playing is the wrong, hes been playing this system for sometime now are strikers will always struggle to score goals because there not even in the box when the ball crossed in.

I propose that Arsenal fans World wide post letters once a week for the next four weeks to UEFA & FIFA complaining about Barcelona FC’s ‘tapping up’ of Cesc Fabregas. Also post a letter just once to Arsenal FC requesting that they formally complain to UEFA & FIFA. I have drawn up 3 template letters that I will email to willing participants. All you need to do is type in your own Name & Address before printing off & posting. Momentum will be boosted by you forwarding the email to every one of your Arsenal FC fan family & friends, encouraging them to participate.
    Please see …. http://www.goonerettesonline.co.uk/452/other/an-overview-of-the-cesc-saga-time-for-the-fans-to-bite-back/#more-452
