New Goalkeeper – Yes or No?

almunia

By GEORGE PEACE Arsenal want a goalkeeper. It’s common knowledge amongst fans and management alike. Critics and supporters will shout, until blue in the face, that this is the area of our squad that most needs strengthening (I’m sick of hearing people call into talk-shows and beginning with the sentence: “I just want to talk about the goalkeeping situation”). So, I’m not going to contradict any of these people by saying that, I too, would like a new goalkeeper to arrive.

What seems to ruffle a few feathers though, is my opinion that although I think a new goalkeeper would be a positive move, there are other areas of the field that are far more imperative to bolster. Can someone please tell me why, when we have four goalkeeping options, we need a new ‘keeper more than a new central defender? Excluding Nordveit, who is yet to start a Premiership game for us, we don’t even have two different defensive partnership options.

We can field Koscielny and Vermaelen, or Djourou and potentially Song (or some combination of those four). The latter I feel is wasted when moved into defence, because he fills his holding-midfield role so excellently. So is it not absolutely vital that we sort out the acquisition of a centre-back before we focus on who’s between the sticks? Yes, Almunia has cost us many-a-point last season and Fabianski looks like a baby bird trying to fly when crosses are floated in, but still, there are another two options on our books. Szczesny is looking more concrete every time I see him and Mannone had a brilliant (if not brief) run in the team last season.

Don’t get me wrong here, I would like a new goalkeeper to save us some vital points this season, to convert that draw into a win. But we need a new centre-back to even stand a chance of competing for the league title. A new ‘keeper might be appealing, but if we don’t have the required mettle in front of him, isn’t it all for nought? I can’t judge Koscielny fully yet, I’ve only watched him a few times, but even if he proves to be Vermaelen Mk.2, can we trust that both of these men will stay fit for a full season? Given our recent injury record, I doubt it!

This leads me to the crux of this article. Who do we want to see recruited into the heart of our defence? Various names have been thrown about all summer long, but only two have caused my ears to prick up and my ambition to start flowing. The first was Per Mertesacker, a defender I’ve admired before he was linked to Arsenal, who positively towers at 6ft 6 and went on to display some true class for Germany in the World Cup. However, whatever amount of it was paper-chat and whatever was true, I’ve accepted that we won’t be seeing Per in an Arsenal shirt.

Since then, two of the major names touted have been Emir Spahic and Sébastien Squillaci. Both are thirty-year-old, experienced defenders, and while I’m sure they’ll add something to our squad, I’m not overly excited by the prospect of either of these two. They remind of me of Campbell and Silvestre at the latter half of last season, but, like Koscielny, I don’t know either of them as well as some other defenders so my judgment is limited. And, in fairness to Squillaci, he has experience playing with Sagna and Clichy (he didn’t cover himself in glory in the World Cup, but then again, which Frenchman did?).

But the new name that has got me hopeful again, much like Mertesacker did, is Bordeaux’s Michael Ciani. At 6ft 2, he’s not massive (though he’s known for his heading ability – scoring in the Champions League last season), but the guy is built like a brick shithouse. He’s a powerful defender, as opposed to quick, springy defenders like Vermaelen and Koscielny. I can’t help but think that our defence would flourish with an injection of pure strength. Ciani, apparently, can play at right-back too, which cannot fail but to give us more options. Unfortunately, the media are saying he’ll command a £15M transfer fee and is only being lined up as a backup, should the Squillaci deal fall through.

Is it worth me questioning why a £15M, 26-year-old defender is backup for a £5M, 30-year-old defender? Shouldn’t that be the other way around? Well, I’m not a football manager, nor a banker, so what do I know? Anyway, it looks highly plausible that at least one defender will join our ranks before September 1st, and who knows, maybe a goalkeeper too. But if we do have to settle for just that one defender, who do you people want to see?

Looks like I’ll be eating my words as the Squillaci deal appears to be as close to being done as is possible before an official announcement.

Goodbye Ciani.. I just hope Seb can cut the cheese (I mean play well, before anyone makes a fart joke..)

The biggest Almunia problem is the lack of belief he imparts to the team. there is a lack of certainty which we all see. add in the fact he gets beaten to his near post too often and flapping at corners and you’ve defined someone that is almost good enough but alas not good enough for us.

To go to the next tier we need the guy people can be certain of plain and simple.

Papa Bouba Diop is also built like a brick sh1thouse. But he’s so malcoordinated he can barely put one foot in front of the other. Should we sign him too?

the reason we need a new goalkeeper even though we have four is quite simply, our two senior ones are completely out off their depth at this level and the other two are too young at the moment, what are you not clear on?

Yes we need a ‘keeper, without question, we need a ‘keeper, a keeper is what we need.

There is no point in signing either Schwarzer or Given as they are both currently injured, Schwarzer with a back problem and Given with the shoulder injury he sustained last season.

We cannot go into the season with just three centre backs, one of which has played just one Premiership game, another has been injured for the best part of a year and wasn’t that good anyway. Song is needed in midfield and can’t be spared from that role.

If Squillaci signs his experience will be invaluable and will allow both Djourou and Koscielny to settle into the squad.

the biggest issue I see in almunia is certainty. the players can’t be certain of him and what he will do. we have all seen the doubt whether he will come for a ball. add to that his apparent weakness on the near post and his flapping at crosses and you have defined a player albeit good yet not good enough for us as our starter. Because of our style, playing goal for AFC is probably one of the toughest jobs in football. He must be excellent at set plays and in breakaway situations. Teams must be extremely opportunistic when attacking us we don’t usually give sides the chance to force us to hunker down and withstand long periods of pressure. But we don’t protect our keeper very well. We permit other teams to stick someone on our keeper and either not really do something about it or not have a keeper to not be affected by this tactic. Why do teams not try this on Cech or VanDeSar? ans. cause they know it to be ineffective. So I would argue to get to the next level (PL champs and CL champs)… and stay there we need a keeper who can play the role this team needs, not just a shot stopper but an integral part of the defense, a monster at set plays, an offensive weapon after breaking up attacks.

It is clear we are looking to bring in a defender as more of a priority than a GK. You need to bear in mind though, we are looking at a CB as a backup and the GK will be a starter.

So that is why there maybe more fans asking for a Keeper than a defender.

As for saying Mannone had a brilliant spell, you must have seen a different set of games. He cost us a goal against West Ham and Birmingham with terrible keeping. The defence were nervous when he played and his one good game against Fulham involved routine saves that most keepers were expected to save.

We need an organiser of the defence, not necessarily a world beating goal keeper. As long as we get someone who is confident, commands their box and is able to organise the defence, I will be happy.

This is what Van Der Saar does to great effect.

Maybe we could get special permission from FIFA to play two ‘keepers, then they could share the blame for their cock-ups. ;-)

I really dont think we need a goalkeaper as much as most fans, I still have faith in Fabianski hes a great keaper but he seriously needs to gain more experiance. There’s no doutb hes are best shot stopper but hes decision making is his downfall, Again This is down to lack of experiance If AW gave him a good run in the team I have no doutb he will prove alot of people wrong. I dont no why fans are goning on so much about a new CB and GK I think are main priority right now should be should for a new world class DM, someone who can help close the game down when needed Ive preached on here many times before Song is not good enough. Hes not a big game player he couldnt even break into the Cameroon first team in the world cup and wat will we do if he gets injurd? and No we cant call on that waste of space Denilson AW Should have sold him to Hull City long time ago, this possition is where we are most short in my opinion.

We need a world class keeper not one that doesn’t even play for his country. PL winning teams usually have a number 1 international keeper. Alumnia aint never will be and definately needs to go home!

A keeper, a CB , but most importnatly of all a new defensive midfielder and a new shape to the team in tougher matches

Song is a fairly decent dfm, but he is the only protection for the back line and the problem is he gets caught infront of the ball regularly evry game.

We should play 4 2 3 1 in games against the bigger, better organised teams to stop them ripping us to shreds on the break( think Man Yoo, Chelsea and plenty of others last season)

Ciani in and play Verm infront of them alonside Song and we may finally have the bite through the centre we’ve lacked for 5 years

    I though we played 11 against 11?
I would agree with our injuries we should go for 10 a side. OR perhaps you do not count our goalkeepers as players?
Squillaci, if he comes, had an ankle injury in January 2010, which reduced his playing time. It seems he is robust but commits few fouls.

i’d prefer ciani but i’d settle for squillaci..they’re both good experienced defednders…
abt the goalkeeping situation i dont really think we need to do much abt it…i mean dont get me wrong..sometimes the goalkeepers just need some protection from the defenders..and in our case we lack that…period..
so what i feel is that it does not really matter to me if we dont sign a gk but a cb …thats the area i would really put more effort into…i remember the season when almunia first got the 1st team.in that season i would say he was pretty impressive to me…i know he is not the best..but he is good…just uncertanty thats all..this can be resolved if the backs can really give him some cover and make him feel a lil more comfortable, decisive and more confidence :-)
i hope i did not offend anyone with this post but this is what i think

WE ARE THE ARSENAL… ARSENAL FC … WE’RE BY FAR THE GREATEST TEAM THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN :D

If there is any truth in the Ajax story I would be quite happy to acquire the gk shelemberg (sp) and CB as a matched pair. I think they are pipe dream rumours but I have always been impressed with all players coming out of Ajax. they seem to best immediately fit into our system of play.

Sorry people but the facts are this… WE WILL NOT WIN ANOTHER LEAGUE TITLE UNTIL WE GET A CLASS KEEPER..
Its as plain and simple as that. Is Swartzer the answer? at 37????? We need someone who will stay between the sticks for a long time to come, the only thing i think that is going to happen is we will bring Szczesny through while swartzer keeps goal. We have the best chance in years to win this thing so please lets not muck it up over one position..

This Arsenal obsession with height in defence is ridiculous as it,s timing in the leap that counts ,not height alone ,but that,s typical English style mentality ,especialy when one looks at useless Dawson ,King ,Woodgate,at Spurs even worse Ferdinand and Brown at Trash .United ,Richards and Lescott at City and others, but it,s always the goalie,s fault when useless ballwatching over tall defenders turn their backs on the ball ,whether from free kicks or shots outside the box ,obscuring the goalies line of sight.
