Arsenal Come Good Up North

andriarshavin

By TONY MABERT Arsenal continued their unbeaten start to the Premier League with an entertaining 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Theo Walcott and Mame Biram Diouf both scored in the opening half-hour to follow hat-tricks they both scored in their previous matches, against Blackpool and Norwich City respectively. Andrei Arshavin then restored the Gunners’ lead early in the second half to avenge their defeat by the same scoreline in the penultimate match of last season.

Arshavin found Robin van Persie in the centre on 20 minutes, and the Dutchman turned and played the ball into the path of Walcott, who drilled a clinical low strike into the far bottom corner. The shot was a genuine netbuster, fierce enough to break open a small hole in the side-netting, the repairing of which caused a delay in the second-half kick-off.

Blackburn were unperturbed at going behind after their bright start, and they deservedly levelled the match seven minutes later. Christopher Samba, immense throughout the match, broke up an attack and gambolled forward before releasing El-Hadji Diouf down the left. Laurent Koscielny, back from suspension, provided little resistance for the forward, who muscled past the Frenchman with ease before squaring the ball for Mame Biram Diouf to tap in from six yards.

The Gunners were back in front soon after the break courtesy of Arshavin’s second goal of the season. Bacary Sagna charged down the right wing and squared the ball to Cesc Fabregas. The Arsenal captain’s shot rebounded off Walcott but into the path of the Russian who finished from 12 yards.

Fabregas and van Persie were both making their first starts of the season for the Gunners, but the latter was forced off after 35 minutes with a calf injury. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has often lamented the physical approach adopted by certain Premier League teams against his players, not least in midweek when he likened Stoke City’s tactics to those of a rugby team, but van Persie’s injury was sustained in an innocuous clash with Rovers’ teenage defender Phil Jones, deployed here in front of the back four. Fabregas was then replaced by Tomas Rosicky midway through the second half.

Arsenal could have had the lead as early as the fourth minute, when a short corner routine ended with the ball pinging around the box before Abou Diaby’s shot deflected off both Vince Grella and Paul Robinson and out to safety. Neither player knew much about it, but Rovers remained on terms.

After that Arsenal struggled once again to deal with Blackburn’s direct, aerial threat, with Ryan Nelsen having his header from a ninth-minute corner headed off the line by Fabregas, with Samba also heading over the bar from another set piece.

After Arshavin had restored the Gunners lead the London side began to exert more control over the match. Marouane Chamakh, on to replace van Persie, impressed again in attack.

However, as the clock ticked down, Blackburn rallied, and Michel Salgado could have equalised late on when he blazed a strike over the bar from close range after Samba had headed a corner into his path.

Walcott was denied a brace with five minutes left when he had the ball in the net, but the flag was already up for offside, while late substitute Jack Wilshere was denied an injury time goal on the break by a near-post save from Robinson.

It gives good feeling this weekend to know that the thugs of Sam Allardiced were comprehensively tamed by the slick gunners. Jay Jay Okocha was the last real footballer to have played for Allardyce. Since his depature from Bolton, all Sam Allardyce’s teams have been a pain to watch.
And for added measure, the force of Theo Walcott’s goal tore the net into pieces… that is what we call Ak47 goal. I hope Mr Hansen now shuts up and allow Theo to thrive and enjoy his game.
Arsenal have sent out a clear message to Stoke City, Bolton et al. We have matured and will not longer be intimidated. Up gunners!!

We need to credit this victory to manuel Almunia ,who didnt make any mistakes today…
Another good thing is that van persie is injured and he cannot play the international matches during this break…

According to Wenger, van Persie has a twisted ankle and reckons he will be out of action for ten to fifteen days.

Chamakh made quite a difference when he came on, mostly in defence where his wrestling talents came to the fore. The more I see of him the more I like him. With RvP out for a couple of weeks he could get a decent run of games.

Let’s hope RvP is not going to have yet another injury blighted season.

In the second half, I thought our passing
was careless and sloppy and we lost possession far too often. Fabregas seemed to be well off the pace and I wasn’t sorry when he was subbed. Still too early in the season to be despondent though.

Which defender would you be confident with against Drogba?

If there are only two DM players better than Song, that still makes him an excellent player – which he is.

What exactly do you think he does wrong Jim? Stop playing Football Manager and look at players for their individual talents and abilities.

Good win Gooners. I honestly think Chamakh is our best signing in a while. We’ll win something if he stays fit and plays the majority of games.
But Koscielny was raped for their goal.He was just brushed aside
I think you’re being very had on him there. The guy was going at speed and Kos was only just keeping up (which is better than most PL CBs). Because he was straining to keep up, he was off balance.
I really don’t think there are many CBs that would have stayed close enough to be ‘brushed aside’.
Some of them would have committed a foul early but I think his previous experience with our blind refs at liverpoo stopped him doing that (we’d have had a had time with 10 men on the pitch).

Good win when not at our very best. Safest hands seen out of MA in quite a while. Fabs 60 minutes just enough and most important came through a very physical test uninjured. Chams better be careful with his physical methods at setplays as a penalty will be
given if he keeps it up. Sagna’s failure led to goal where was his coverback? Slow jog back not acceptable. The clash of styles was compelling and pederson is extremely average until he takes a throw in

    Song for me too.
He had a few stray passes and looked sluggish but a couple more games in and he’ll be back to his best,
though I suspect that’s not good enough for the village idiot james who thinks he’s crap.
