A Look At The Positives and The Negatives

PNN1

By GEORGE PEACE For my first Sunday lunchtime blog, I thought I’d look at some of the positives and negatives from yesterdays northern clash at Blackburn.

The Positives

The Win

The ‘simple’ task of securing all three points at Ewood Park yesterday was undoubtedly the most important facet of Arsenal’s weekend. Blackburn may be a mid-table team who are easily swept aside when away from home, but when they turn hosts, it becomes a very different matter. Any team has to buckle down to grind out a victory at Ewood but, nonetheless, maximum haul must be taken from places like this if a team wants to push for the Championship. If you don’t agree, just ask how Alex Ferguson felt after his team visited there last season! I don’t care how early in the campaign it may be, this was a ‘must win’ match for Arsenal. And however edgy it may have been at times, they managed to pull it off.

Theo Walcott

Theo will always have his doubters, people like Alan Hansen and Chris Waddle are too stubborn to even admit there’s glowing potential there, but his criticism is irrelevant. I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I wasn’t overly enthused about Theo’s hatrick last week, and was more concerned with how he’d follow up the feat. But follow it up he did! Opening the scoring, dancing through Blackburn’s defence and turning in a second ‘Man of the Match’ performance. He was easily our best player on Saturday, and long may this run of form continue.

The Atmosphere at Ewood

Ewood Park was buzzing on Saturday, and it was good to hear both sets of fans getting behind their teams and at each other. I’m sure the support of the travelling Gunners that day helped the team deal with the threat of Blackburn, however rare that threat was! When we went there last season, with five or six first-team regulars missing, there was a strange sense of foreboding – not this time however. Both sets of fans were riled up and, whether that was because the managers had been taking a pops at one another or not, the atmosphere was palpable.

The Negatives

Our Failure to Break

Okay, I agree that the only thing that really mattered on Saturday was the win, and I’m delighted we got that. But when taking a slightly more critical look, the final score should have been 4-1. In the closing 20 minutes of the match we twice broke clear of Blackburn and clearly should have put away both chances. The second break in question began with a three on one! Yes, Wilshire lost his footing at the end, but the whole breakaway should have been a lot quicker and more decisive. Issues like this aren’t generally mentioned if a team has won anyway, but imagine if after missing those chances, Blackburn had scored a 92nd minute equaliser. We still need to be more penetrative when given the chance to finish off teams for good.

Van Persie’s Injury

There’s not really much to be said here that hasn’t been said before. It’s the same old story of Robin producing glittering displays that are then suddenly halted by some form of injury. Van Persie looked great for the half hour he played, even setting up the first goal, but was then frustratingly (and somewhat expectedly) substituted because of an ankle problem. All we can do is cross our fingers that he’s not gone for too long.

Pre-match Manager Baiting

I said earlier that one of the best aspects of this weekends match was the atmosphere. That was partly due to the managers having a bit of a ‘handbags at dawn’ style duel through the press, prior to the game. But although I liked the resulting mood, it didn’t mean I liked the cause of it. Wenger making tongue-in-cheek comments about rugby and Fat Sam getting out the history books on our disciplinary record was just plain pointless. Wenger’s experienced enough to know that making comments like that is unlikely to influence the referee. Fatty’s been around long enough to know that his team can’t handle us without pushing the rules to their limit. So why not just leave those comments at home and not give the press something to distort and turn against you?

The Neutrals

Koscielny

I like Laurent Koscielny. The few times I’ve seen him he’s looked swift and well able to judge the flight of a ball. But something about the way he plays strikes me as nervous, and I can’t escape the feeling that there’s a clanger waiting to be dropped somewhere. Laurent was skinned alive by El-Hadji Diouf for the first goal and I hope not to see such worrying events repeat themselves. Issues like this are avoidable though, and with the experience of Squillaci in the squad, I’m sure these fears will quickly be abated – hence Laurent’s inclusion as a ‘Neutral’.

Almunia in Goal

Though many of you will think this should be in ‘Negatives’, I believe that the time for complaining about our goalkeeper is nearing an end. I would still love to see a new ‘keeper arrive, make no mistake, but I just don’t see it happening. In our up-coming Carling Cup and FA Cup matches, we’ll have a chance (hopefully!) to see how Mannone and Szczesny are developing. You never know, one of them may make it into the first-team before the season’s up. Before you all leave me comments saying that we need experience, and we should sell Almunia and Fabianski, remember that the transfer window is almost closed. Once it has, there will be no more use in complaining about our Number 1, whoever that may be!

Song Goes Blonde

Those of you that saw the game against Blackburn will no doubt have noticed that Alex Song has had a trim and gone blonde. So, unless the poor chap’s become very ill, it would look like he’s up for making a bit of a statement. Personally I like it; football needs more quirky characters like blonde Song and wise-cracking Eboue to lighten up what can otherwise be a culture of pretentious, gel-haired prima donnas. Now, let’s just hope Thomas Vermaelen takes to the pitch next week sporting a mighty handle-bar moustache…

Nice post author. I’m very optimistic this season. We look very strong as a squad. RVP gets injured on comes Chamakh, Cesc tires on comes born again Tom Rosicky, Andre Arsh tires on comes Jack the lad. We now have true depth in most areas. I watched the Blackburn game closely and Diaby is becoming more disciplined, a monster in fact! He and Song look away day musts and can form a great partnership in defensive midfield. Theo is beginning to blossom, looks lean and mean and Koscielny, despite getting skinned for the Blackburn goal (should have opted for the slide tackle) is a very sharp marker, concise distributor and looks really fit. Remember, he’s only played 2 games in the Premiership, difficult away games! Cesc was far better than he got credit for, he’ll be smokin’ after the International break. Clichy has Gibbs to keep him on his toes and may lose his starting berth if he gets injured. Geat competition there. Eboue is our Mr versatile and I’m pleased to say, now Mr dependable. Vela still has plenty of time to prove his quality, Denilson is good cover but may struggle to get a start now and especially when Ramsey returns. We need to get behind our keeper. If it’s Almunia, we need to help him, he had a good game yesterday. Let’s give him some support at the Bolton game if he starts. To conclude, all we need is some luck this season and by luck I mean fit and healthy players. We’ve been savaged by injuries to top names for years now. Let’s hope this is our year. Back the team, back the manager, back the board. Up the Arsenal.

We definately do need another attacking player, because of injuries but not only that, the bottom line is we got a lucky break with arshavins goal yesterday and other than that we didnt create much, we don’t create much against decent opposition and will only do so against the likes of blackpool, bolton at home.

We lack directness and that’s what undid us last season just as much as the defence, against teams in the top 6, we cudnt create anything! let alone score much last season, games against chelsea, united, spurs, villa, everton @ home. (not including the everton away as they were truly shocking that day)

Yes we’ll score plenty against low quality opposition, it’ll always happen, but we lack direct, match winners. Rosicky, Eboue, Vela to me arent going to win you the league, sue me, but they are just not. We need someone who will sometimes do something diff and have a shot once in a while when things arent going right, theres too much passing and going backwards rather than moving the ball quicker and going forward (aka barca), actually creating chances. We don’t create chances against decent opposition, even blackburn.

Someone who can run at players and be a little greedy and do something on his own and take initiative, if we had a ronaldo we would’ve won the league last year hands down and this year too. Someone like an Afellay, even an Ashley Young, an IMPACT player is needed or believe me we won’t win the title or champions league this season for definate, just being honest. Theo is arguably our most direct player but we need more, thats for sure.

    George,

I disagree with you about the Wenger comments, while they may not directly affect the way referees manage the game they do draw attention to the antics of certain players.

Yesterday was a case in point, I believe he allowed the Arsenal players, Chamakh in particular, a bit of licence in “handling” the Blackburn players when defending at set pieces.

When it comes to the psychology and mind games, involved in Premiership football, I wouldn’t be so bold as to dispute Wenger’s expertise.

I’m soo happy for Theo he is now proving his critics wrong the reason why hes playing better is because he is no longer is just counting on his pace alone. He is no longer just trying to beat the fullback at the barline hes cutting inside allot more were hes most dangerous,Theo almost is now almost like are main target man and as the the Special 1 has said on so many occasion’s before this is where we will see the best of him. He is now able to show his great movement and finishing Walcott is not a out and out winger this was the problem all along, He will finish are top scorer this season that I’m sure of, On the negative side I’m sorry but as i said yesterday a world class DM is needed and this has been the case for some time now lets not get to over excited guys over 3 games into the season and start wanking like allot of fans happen to do, We are still short of some new faces.

Got to disagree with a lot of your points there Rock. I admit, we weren’t massively creative yesterday but we’re still missing a fully-fit Fabregas. Yes, we were lucky with Arshavin’s goal, but conversely, we were unlucky not to have had scored the other two clear chances. Last season we destroyed Spurs and Villa at home (3-0) & when we went to Old Trafford with a full squad, we played United off the park (we had something like six shots on target, they had one, but we somehow lost!). If injuries don’t ravage us this season, I don’t think we need any more attacking players. Van Persie, Chamakh, Arshavin and Walcott are a strike-force of considerable power, especially with the penetration of players like Fabregas and Nasri in behind them.

I understand that Wenger just wanted to make sure the referee kept an eye out for such things as fouls on our keeper, but I just don’t know if it was necessary. Sometimes comments like that can end up working against you, instead of for you.

Whether it was through his comments or not though, I thought the game was handled well by the ref’. And I certainly won’t dispute the fact that Wenger knows a thing or two about mind games.

    George

Good blog, though a bit harsh on Theo’s hat trick for me, as we saw with Arshavin and Jack this weekend even the best opportunities are squandered now and again, especially in long grass, maybe Theo has benefitted from the summer off and can at last push on to a higher level.

Admittedly AW’s comments can make us cringe now and again however, visiting a hostile ground like Ewood (players not fans lol) any weapons available need to be deployed and as much as I agree this could backfire, as his comments were based on fact and who the ref was going to be possibly we benefited, even if only that no serious injuries were reported (the RVP challenge was innocuous and is not thought to be serious).

I didn’t want to detract from Theo’s hatrick, I thought it was thoroughly deserved. I just had a nagging feeling that we might not see anything from him again for a few months.

But he proved me wrong at Blackburn, he was excellent again! Finger’s crossed for Bolton ey? ;)

Yeah, he’s already beaten his total (EPL) for last season, if he maintained his current rate he’s on 50 for the season

A clean sheet against the Trotters would be good too having scored 4 and conceded 2 in January.

Berg10, spot on about the length of the grass. No one seems to have noticed that. It had a big effect on how we played.

Not even going to go into how poor Blackburn are. Coming back from the game on the train and hearing their fans say how well they played. Thank god I don’t have to watch that crap every week.

As for AW’s comments, he was praised by most of the top football writers on Sunday Morning on Sky, for saying what he said. He was bang on the money. It is not football and should be stamped out.
