How nutty Nige saw off the Seadogs

sfc
by CARL ELDRIDGE You get to go to some weird, wonderful and woeful (T********) places following the Arsenal. But I put Scarborough firmly in the wonderful bracket. More for the experience than the place itself (can a club ever have had a better nickname than the Seadogs?). Alas, the club went out of business three years ago and I have just read that the demolition of Scarborough’s Athletic Ground is imminent.

Me and Brad went up there - before it was renamed the McCain Stadium - for a League Cup game during the 1992–93 season and managed to persuade the box office wallahs that we were mates of Tony Adams and that the seats put by in his name were indeed for us. I have always felt slightly guilty about this and often wondered how TA’s pals got in that night.

The game wasn’t a classic but was memorable because of the fog. Or sea mist. Whatever it was it enveloped the ground so we, sitting in the main stand, could only see half of the pitch. So when nutty Nige hit a 30-yard screamer to give us a 1-0 win, half of us saw it thunderously fly from his boot and the other half saw it go in. We cheered the goal in stages that night.
I think that was the season we went on to win the League Cup and FA Cup (both against Sheff Wed) so it seems to fit nicely that AW has said we are going for all thr trophies this season. We expect a strong outfit up in Geordieland next week then, boss!
Nothing like a cup tie at a lower league ground and amongst my favourite trips away in this category are Hartlepool, Hereford, Grimsby, Yeovil and Cardiff, while York and Wrexham are memorable for all the wrong reasons of course.

Brilliant picture, but very sad. maybe someone should send it to Rooney and remind him that just a weeks wages would be enough to run this club for a season. i guess we should all be doing a little more to save our local clubs.

Wasn’t there a drunken visit to Shrewsbury in the early 90′s as well?

Everyone remembers the defeat at Wrexham but I also went there when we beat them 3-2 (after being 2-nil down) in 1978.

On the train home the police were telling us to pull the blinds down covering the windows because the train was being targetted by the friendly taffs on the embankment as it left Wrexham. There was a story they were even firing shotguns.

I went to watch Barking FC play Hadleigh a little while back. It was a preliminary FA Cup match where both teams had to pay £1,000 to enter. The winner got their money back. Barking used to be a good club but now windows are boarded up and they still use a microphone which has to be pulled through a hole in a wall. There is no food on offer. This is where John Terry grew up and it suprises me he couldn’t even donate something like £5k. Instead he robs people for tours of Stamford Bridge …
