Aston Villa v Arsenal

Two different types of crisis meet at Villa Park in Saturday’s early kick-off and whilst Villa’s is mainly injury-based, Arsenal’s is mainly not being able to defend based, which ironically can be more difficult to repair than most snapped cruciates. The unexpected reunion with Robert Pires is almost interesting, but if we were to talk about every former Arsenal players who makes a pointless cameo against Arsenal, we’d talk about nothing else.

The whippersnappers making up Villa’s midfield have the potential to make it big in the future – but this early Saturday afternoon may be a little early too early. Despite the slump, Arsenal have been creating chances and had it not been for Carlos Vela milking some reasonably forceful contact to the point it looked like a dive, could well have won and avoided the tedious knee-jerk reactions of this week.

At the very least, this one should be an entertaining and free-flowing game. They’re not words generally associated with Gerard Houllier teams, but with a lack of defensive minded options, he hasn’t got much choice. It should also feature goals.

Both sides have managed just 4 clean sheets in 14 games this season. Although there’s a sizeable gap in terms of league positions and points, Villa and Arsenal are more evenly matched if you take heed of results at half-time. If games were ended after the first 45 minutes, Villa would be on the cusp of the Champions League places.

Obviously the tradition of playing a further 45 minutes renders that stat virtually pointless, but it suggests Villa are no good at holding on to a lead. That makes the Double Result of Aston Villa at Half Time and Arsenal at Full Time @ 22/1 a very interesting proposition. Likewise with home advantage likely to negate any gulf in class, the draw is a good option. It’s unlikely to be a bore draw, so something like the 2-2 stalemate @ 11/1 may not be out of the question.

In an interview, with The Telegraph, Wenger stated that “he would have to be careful with Fabregas in order to manage the players recurrent hamstring injuries”.

Wenger is unable to explain why Fabregas so often suffers hamstring injuries, and does not know if it is physical or psychological. He does, however, promise to make every effort and explore every avenue in order to find a solution.

So another player is added to the list of the perennially injured to join van Persie and Diaby. What is the point in retaining players who are likely to miss large sections of the season every season.

Both Fabregas the club captain and van Persie could play a vital part in the rest of the season were they to be fit. There is money in the kitty and Inter Milan are reported to be willing to pay £43 million for Fabregas so upwards of £70 million could be available to strengthen the defence, midfield and attack.

It’s time to move, the unhappy Fabregas and the seemingly permanently injured van Persie, on and to unlock the piggy bank and buy some top class replacements.

Normally I’d vehemently disagree with that statement (selling Fabregas), however, having become more and more frustrated with the level of his game, and also the excuses of a hamstring being responsible for every aspect of his now less than ordinary performances I find myself in favour of a change.

For me his wayward passing has been more consistent than not, if this was Song, Denilson or Diaby everybody would be slinging muck in their direction.

It appears to be more of a state of the mind, in which case he needs to jog on to Barcraplona.

    BergTen,

Up until the distasteful “tapping up” by Barca, and the player’s expressed desire to join them, I too was 100% behind Fabregas, now as far as I’m concerned, the quicker he goes the better.

It’s sad to think of releasing players because of chronic injuries, but football is now “more important than life or death” and sentiment has to be cast aside.Think what we could do with £70million + .

    Nicky,

When you consider the wages being payed to non-performing players, no club can afford sentiment.

he has not shown any passion for this club, hes openly said he wanted out at the start of the year. His form has dropped as has his attitude on the pitch so i say sell him to the highest bidder. Arsenal have to many passionless players running around, you should feel great honour in playing for the mighty gunners, not just playing for the pay-check (arshavin). RVP is another sad case, my favourite player at the club for many years, but its all become to much. A player who promises to join the elite yet time and time again gets struck down by injury. A slower less physical league (italy, spain) would probably suit him more, and it would be for the best if we cash in while we can.

Fabregas out and nasri to take his spot, and buying parker from west ham. His leadership and passion would work wonders with arsenal and be good for the youth to see a true leader walking around the locker room.
