Arshavin – do the ends justify the means?

carlingcup1

Arsenal kept us waiting, but in the end they delivered when they had to, and the team overcame one of their biggest challenges of the season with a 3-0 win over Ipswich Town sending us to our first cup final since 2007.

The next big challenge will be winning the thing, and hopefully Championship relegation fighters Ipswich have taught us not to take ANYONE lightly. We’re fortunate that the likes of United, Chelsea and City were knocked out in earlier rounds and a final against West Ham or Birmingham City should give us confidence, but hopefully we will not see anything like a repeat of the performance at Portman Road.

We certainly didn’t take them lightly again tonight, but we were victims of the situation we’d got ourselves into – some of our play was rushed and despite creating some good chances, it looked like Ipswich were dealing with us, and growing with confidence as time went on.

I questioned Wenger’s lineup before the game, having hoped very much to see the likes of Song, Walcott and Nasri starting; I could not see the benefit of rotating for a big game like this when our next fixture is Huddersfield Town (not that I’m now guilty of taking teams lightly, I just mean since we’re only in the 4th round of the FA Cup it does not currently represent an instant chance of success). It looked like I was right, with Bendtner and Arshavin looking poor as they have done in recent times. Obviously Wenger felt that against a team like Ipswich, we might just steamroller them and give Nic and Andrey a chance to get their confidence up. It wasn’t really working out.

In the end though, Bendtner came to life and scored a superb opener; taking down a long ball by Jack Wilshere with one delightful touch, before cutting inside and curling a low shot past Fulop in the visitors’ goal.

And then of course came Arshavin to prove me wrong, providing the assists for the next two goals; firstly a well-taken corner onto the head of Laurent Koscielny to score our second, and then a well-timed through-ball to Fabregas to slide in the third.

The pair on the wings didn’t play well, but they delivered the goods, and Arshavin in particular added to his impressive tally of assists for the season. Unlike his performances, his statistics are very good. What takes priority? Are we harsh to criticise him if he can still provide the odd moment of quality that wins games? Normally, you’d settle for that, but at the moment there is thankfully no need, as Walcott and Nasri are both playing a lot better, and matching the Russian for end product.

We’ll presumably see these two again against Huddersfield at the weekend. Hopefully they can put on a display that justifies their impressive numbers.

Elsewhere tonight, Blackpool looked like ending Man United’s unbeaten run, until at 2-0 they were denied a clear penalty. I think every gooner knew at that moment that United would find a way back, and they did. I really hope they don’t do the season unbeaten, but I can’t see us catching them in the league either way. I hope I’m wrong, and I’m sure we’ll push them all the way, but to be honest, second place and the Carling Cup would be a major step in the right direction for next season.

I'm 23-years-old and currently living in Bristol, studying to be a journalist. I've been hooked on Arsenal since I was about 10, and as much as I sometimes wish I could stop, I can't give them up. Favourite player of all time would have to be Patrick Vieira for the sheer passion with which he played the game.

Nice article. And its a strange one with arshavin because he has started to give the ball away virtually every time he gets it and yet, as you say, has more assists than anyone this season despite not being in the starting line up for quite a while now.

Its sort of the same with Bendtner. Despite not really ever playing well in the way that Nasri, Cesc, Rvp etc play well his scoring record is still decent, and very good considering he’s a back up who is still only 23. I think perhaps the success of some of our other young players means that we expect much more from players at a younger and younger age but some players take longer to mature. And if he becomes like Van Nistelrooy by the time he’s 26 then it will be worth it.

Yes 2nd in the league and a cup would be a step in the right direction but I don’t think our competition for the league will be as weak next season as it is this. This is our best chance to win it for a while and may be our best chance to win it for the next few years. Not that we won’t be able to compete in the next few years but teams like Man city, Man u and Chelsea must improve from where they are currently. So we must take our opportunity this year.

anyone else think that Szczesny deserves to keep his place and that he should be first choice from now on? I certainly do. He’s definitely no worse than Fabianski and because of his age he will only get better and better with every game he plays and the confidence it will bring. And since he’s come in we’ve kept lots of clean sheets and not conceded many (although that could just be coinciddence).

I think we’re beautifully poised in 2nd place, breathing down the Manc necks – in fact I’d be more nervous if we were top right now as then it would become “ours to lose”.

I can solve the mystery of Bendtshavin’s weird form; basically it’s whenever I start slagging them off to anyone who will listen, that’s the point they choose to score or assist. Alas doesn’t seem to work with Denilson, Ebouie or Rosicky …

Firstly the Mancs still have Chelsea TWICE, City, Liverpool and a visit to The Emirates to come. They’re not out of the woods.

Secondly Arshavin’s ends doesn’t not justify anything. We want to talk about playing Total Football then all 10 outfield players need to move as a unit. You wonder why Barca was so quick to get rid of Ibrahimovic despite him having a record of scoring in every other game? He contributed nothing to the Barca philosophy. even inf Ibra scored 50 goals they’d still sell him because the other 9 outfield players have to do the work for him to get those goals. Pep saw that as completely unbalanced and I agree with him.

Think of it like your workplace – you bust your butt doing all the ground work but then your boss gets the credit and the bonus. Sure the organization met the project deadline successfully but you did alot more work than the other guy for less recognition.

That’s Arshavin – he’s getting credit for goals and assists when he did nothing but sit in the front position waiting for the midfield and defense to put the ball on a plate for him.

Bendtner and Arshavin are proven quantities — look at Nik’s performance last season. This year, he has been injured, and the success of Chamakh and Nasri means he has less first team opportunities to play into shape.

As for Arshavin, his production and genius are not replaceable by good old boring English football, the kind Abndy grey admires. Production matters. How many great players have been complete non-participants in the defensive part of the game, starting with Michael Owen? Real Madrid plays defense with ten against eleven, in order to carry the offensive threat that is C Ronaldo.

That’s true but those teams were built around those players. Liverpool’s game was to get Owen the ball much like Madrid’s game is to find CRonaldo at every chance. The teams are intentionally playing like that. Arsenal isn’t built on around Arshavin, he’s arguably a peripheral player because he’s not considered part of the strongest XI. Although Messi is the biggest star on Barca, the entire team plays as a unit, not just giving the ball to Messi because Xavi and Iniesta play as much role as he does. So we can talk about playing 4-3-3 Total Football but unless Arshavin does more tracking back then we’re not really the flowing unit we want to be.

Arshavin will become Score-4-@-Anfield-Arshavin. now that he is finally settling down, he is showing some of his well known attributes from Zenith, which is to provide superb assists. his goals will come, trust Arsene when he sees sth in him. but we’ll never see him running like an english. he’s short legs remember?

I dont want to agree with those that believe we will end the season in second place. Manu will lose 6 points to cheski, drop three points at the Emirate, drop three point in anfield and drop two pionts to city at ot.
I am happy we are not number one right now, couldnt have been able to take the pressure. Trust me, we are going to sneak in at about the last few games and walaaa, we be champions!!!!!

The thing with Arshavin is he is fixated on the opponants goal and is constantly gambling whenever he gets the ball – either trying to beat players or slot players through. Passing backwards or sideways is completely unnatural to him, he is the complete opposite to some of the ‘crab’ type players who only want to make sure they dont give the ball away. Its inevitable that Arshavin will give the ball away a lot when he is constantly gambling trying to penetrate the other defence. Fact is he has caused more goals overall than even Nasri, but because most of them have been assists rather than goals he hasn’t had the credit he deserves for it. Overall of course Nasri’s play is better, but Arshavin hardly deserves to be slated for what he has done. Players of less courage would just play it simple and pass it sideways everytime

Blackpool can cry about their penalty shout but why sub on 2 forward or attacking players at 2-nil? A bit of a holding midfielder and some relief for their backline would have been the wise thing. They deserved to lose for being so stupid.

Some claim this is the defining moment for Manure and showing their “resilience” for their “fightback.” I think it shows how vulnerable and swiss cheese they’ve become at the back and absolutely beatable.

Note how quickly chelski’s house of cards has fallen.

AA has just come through a patch wherein his old tricks don’t work anymore. He has been studied and became too predictable and is still too predictable in certain attack positions of the field. Does anyone think AA can cut to the goaline and be given the space to nip one again? I don’t think so. So he has to work harder than ever to improve himself mentally and become unpredictable physically. A corner kick to the near post was a workmanlike cross and was simply what is expected of a professional of his stature. The passes and through balls leading to goalscoring opportunities are working with him one out of 5 to 10 times. A success rate which upsets many of us. They are high risk and have turned us all too often and he has not been the gizza chasing back the 90 yards to defend the error which pisses alot of us off. Recently we have seen him track back more. He is not a good defender but his presence does make a difference and help the defense with his high pressure in those kinda vulnerable breakaways and we saw a bit of that last night.
Am I happy with AA? No. I think he is an entire level below Nasri, Fabs and co.
