Why we must be patient with Bendtner

Nicklas-Bendtner

by OLIVER YEW Arsenalinsider’s Mike Harvey recently wrote about how Niklas Bendtner must prove his critics at Arsenal wrong, and while I totally agree with the point which is being made I still have some sympathy for the striker. The big Dane has not been at his best recently, constantly being let down by a poor touch here and a poor pass there, but while he continues to frustrate Gooners it must be remembered he is being played horribly out of position by Arsene Wenger.

Whatever anyone thinks of Bendtner, whether you rate him or loathe him, he is not a winger. The decision to keep employing him out wide baffles me every time. Granted, there have been a couple of bright moments, firstly the cross to Robin Van Persie at Elland Road was brilliant and then his goal against Ipswich was memorable and sometimes people need to play out of position due to injury, but we are hardly without wingers.

It is time Wenger and Arsenal fans everywhere realised this and stopped expecting him to beat a full-back with his devastating speed and whip in a cross. It is unfair to expect him to do this. He is a big target man, who has the added ability of playing the ball on the deck and he has an eye for goal as well, as we all saw in the Carling Cup semi-final last week.

The opener against the Tractor Boys was a stunning goal and if Thierry Henry had scored it everyone would still be raving about it and would the praise would continue for years to come.

But it is this ability and his physical attributes which give me confidence about what the future holds for the Dane, if he knuckles down and works hard, but he needs to be taken of the flank.

Without much opportunity to shine in his favoured position, Bendtner has quietly racked up five goals in all competitions from only ten starts, including three goals in four Carling Cup appearances.

It must also be remembered for large parts of last season the former FC Copenhagen trainee led the line for the Gunners in the absence of Robin Van Persie, scoring 15 goals in the process.

This shows he is much better at getting on the end of a cross rather than trying to deliver it.

I must point out that while this may seem like an article praising the 23-year-old, I am in agreement with many Gooners about Bendtner. His touch is poor and at times he really looks disinterested. He definitely needs to do more to convince me and many of the Emirates faithful and look like he is interested in wearing the red and white shirt, but to do this  believe he needs to be given a chance upfront.

Obviously that is difficult as Van Persie is on fire at the moment but the time has come for this Bendtner experiment to stop. he is better off sitting on the bench than playing out wide.

Then when he gets his opportunity up front, only then can we truly judge the ability of the Danish iinternational forward.

I quite agree with this article, never underate Bendtner, he just proved that with that stunning goal against Ipswich Town, which catapaulted us to the carling cup final.

We have to believe that Wenger knows his players better than we do, therefor his decision to play Bendtner on the wing must be because, in his judgement, the player is not good enough to be a target man.

Bendtner’s first touch is consistently poor, it was precisely that poor touch that bamboozled the Ipswich defender and allowed him to turn and score his goal. Comparisons with Thierry Henry are ludicrous.

We have had ample time to evaluate his potential, the consensus seems to be that he has reached his peak and it’s just not good enough.

i am supprised u identified that bendy has a poor touch, in recent performances he has shown to control long balls very well, he is not a player who sould play on the wing really but has done quite well. if he was at any other club they would be applauding his form

Like many players Bendtner needs a run of games, he was excellent last year keeping our title hopes alive and scored in the Camp Nou. John in Norfolk you need to put some glasses on if you think that wasn’t a deliberate touch to trick the defender. He’s shown in the last couple of performances that he is coming back to last year’s form.

    Are you joking John?

That was one of the best touches any Arsenal player has made and was no fluke. You probably had your eyes closed last season when he was the only player who stepped up and dragged us kicking and screaming to a title shot.

He has proven he scores goals, proven he plays well when he gets a run of games. He is not even at 50% of his potential, and just turned 23.

Arsenal fans really are clowns at times.

I agree Bendy has shown a poor touch in recent times, but there is no way you can say that his first touch for the goal against Ipswich was poor-far from it, it was world-class. Now all he has to do is reproduce that more consistently.

That Bendtner goal against Ipswich was of the highest calibre. It deserved comparison with a Thierry Henry type special and he just needs a regular run in the team. He’s not the finished article, but can be an extremely valuable player to Arsenal.

I think it’s more an issue of who he plays with. When I see Bendtner, Denilson, Eboue and more recently Arshavin in a line up together I worry.
Bendtner on the right wing with Eboue behind him is an nightmare

i agree with some of the comments about bendtner he has got a pretty bad first touch but he has scored 41 goals and 18 assists in 74 starts mainly as a substitute this is no mean feat. If he had the work rate he would be world class. Also he does miss his fair share of chances but he is always getting chances so he is making the right runs no doubt he is our second striker when fit. He should stay!!

Agreed with your article completely. Bendtner is simply made a victim of AW’s experiment. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to see that if RVP & bendtner are played together, It ought to be him down the middle & RVP at the wings, for both technical & tactical reasons. RVP likes to drop deep, has better pace & passing ability, whereas Bendtner is better aerially & pose a more demanding physical presence to the opposing CB.
I still think he’ll come good eventually, overall I’d rate him higher than Chamakh, even though I think the moroccan makes an excellent backup.
I dont give a rat’s bottom about the players personal life, I’m only concerned with what they do on the pitch. So even if the Dane comes across as snobbish or aloof to some, I can name half a dozen underachieving players who deserve more flak if one would take a holistic view of our team.

Am I joking? Absolutely not. He did not control the ball, it bounced away from him, as so many balls do. Watch Nasri or Fabregas when they receive the ball, instant close control and awareness of their next move. With Bendtner the ball is never under control and that’s why he so often gives the ball away.

Please don’t insult Thierry Henry with these utterly ridiculous comparisons.

I don’t remember the last time I went to a match and didn’t hear abuse at Bendtner around me.

The fact is, these silly 98ers are a bunch of fickle pricks and no blog will stop them. There are more 98ers at matches than proper fans.

Against Ipswich the twats behind me were swearing at Bendtner all match and then sung “super Nik” when he scored. Fickle or what.

If it’s not Bendtner, it’s Arshavin. If it’s not Arshavin, it’s Denilson.

Support the team and the players. Don’t be chumps!!

Bendtners first touch for the Ipswich goal was excellent, anybody who has played football can appreciate that. In regards to his position, its clear that he is not a conventional winger however Wenger encourages fluidity and the interchanging of positions. Having him start the game wide right does not stop him getting into central scoring positions.

He took it on the outside of his foot, took all the pace of and wrongfooted the defender, there is no way in hell he did not mean that, why not just go ahead and say he was trying to pass to someone but somehow the ball flew into the back of the net.

He is not a Winger but neither is he a Centre Forward capable of scoring 20 goals plus a Season in the Premier League. As a back-up he is far too “hit and miss” and with the exception of the odd game (Ipswich, case in point)he never really does enough to hurt the opposition either from the bench- as an impact player,or as a “Starter”.
Frankly he is not half as good as he believes himself to be!!

Excellent article, I have been telling this to other Gooners at the office but they wont listen. Personally, I think that if we are playing the trio of Chamakh, Bendtner and Arshavin tomorrow then surely the best solution would be to switch Bendtner to the left wing and Arshavin to the right. As you say, Bendtner is not a player who can run at and beat the full back before crossing and his great goal against Ipswich did come from cutting in from the left handside. This switch also might help Arshavin too, as I’m sure if he got an opportunity to score on his favoured right side he would take it. Anybody else agree?

Ok for all those bendtner & denilson fans, wake up & listen to ureselves!!!! all i hear is how we should be patient & how we should support these players (PLEASE) the truth of the matter is they have had there chances to play in their “prefered” positions & have failed misserabley. I’m sorry but the kind of money that they get paid, they should beable to control & pass the ball a whole lot better than they do, & the problem may well b the manager who in my opinion continues to play these players & they simply are not good enough to wear the Arsenal shirt. In the last five years they have not improved, infact thyey’ve gone bkwards. they are not the onlyones in the team that need to move on !!!!

Theres a reason why arsene put bendtner on the wings. He knows. When arsene decide to put rvp in the centre of the front 3, many doubt his decision. Many thinks rvp should play on the right. Look at how well rvp plays now. The same goes to henry. He plays as a winger at juventus. Then arsene plays him as a striker. Hes now a legend. Arsene observe nick everyday in training. He knows what is the best position for the player eventhough it taked time for the player to realise it. Nasri is another example. plays in the centre for marseille yet he plays his best games for arsenal in the wings.

i always like bendtner. i believe he is similar with inzaghi. im not sure many people realized this but almost every time bendtner plays, he will always get into goal scoring positions. after that its a question if he can finish it or not. wenger is right to stick with bendtner, he’ll be an important back up when needed.

He’s scored a few goals….give a monkey half the chances bendtner has had and the return would be similar.the fact we are applauding such players as bendtner eboue denilson and rosicky is mental, as is the 15million being banded about for his signature.

First of all everyone who plays right or left midfield are not wingers, the fullbacks at Arsenal do that job, run through the flanks, whip a cross and sometimes even dribble. If you look at the way we play, the fullbacks are part and parcel of most of our attacks. In that case, the attacking three up front are just focal points for our attacks. None of those three hang on to their positions, they revolve around, infact when Rosicky plays the central role, all four of them rotate constantly. This confuses people who mark them. Also, when the fullbacks rush in, the three upfront move into the box and take a more central position, now the fullbacks can either cross the ball or pass it to someone closer, giving us more option. In order to do this successfully, all three players upfront need to be good at passing and also finishing. This season, unlike the last 3-4 seasons, we actually have players who are more confident with their finishing skills (Nasri, Walcott especially). This is Wenger’s approach to breakdown teams that defend with 10 men and its paying nice dividend. Literally, the top three act as 3 strikers and this where Bendtner’s skills come to play. He holds the ball well, decent with his head and also bullies the defenders. This last month though he has shown that he can also whip a cross if needed. By having, 3 strikers and the fullbacks playing the traditional winger’s role, we have almost all our players, except the centre backs, in the opposition half, allowing us to control the game completely (ofcourse, making us more susceptible to counter attacks).

So at the end of it, Bendtner is not wasted as a Winger, he is more of a Striker, who rotates with the central player. He adds more muscle to our attack and adds something unique to our attack.

Finally someone with some sense. Arshavin gets booed because he doesnt “put in a shift” and defend, but why did we buy him to defend or create goals. Arsenal fans need to realize that Bendtner as third choice striker…better than what most teams have. NB52 and arshavin are the same as in they could both be playing bad but still have that end product. And denilson deserves some but not all the shit he gets.

typical of most arsenal supporters, a player plays a couple of good games and all of a sudden hes the next big thing AGAIN.Two weeks ago everyone was asking for his head for continual poor performances, one goal later its all forgotten. No question it was a quality goal, but its amazing how fickle supporters are. He is inconsistent, has a poor first touch, terrible in the air (amazing for someone so big, compare him to chamma and the heading ability is laughable. Yes he scored a thriller against the scum in december 2007 but has he scored a header since?Half the time in games when the keeper kicks it down field he runs under the ball and misses it, not good hold up play at all),and wastes so many oppurtunities (in the run of games last year yeah he scored a few, but if you remember correctly he wasted countless oppurtunities. One game he had heaps of opputunities and scored none, but half the fans said ‘its ok at least he got in those positions’, what a stupid excuse he should of converted more.

Same goes for adebayor, his one fluke season came about because he strung a season together but largely because you have world class passers in the team like fabregas, nasri, ect. So you will always get excellent delivery, those 30+ goals probably came from 2056 misses.

Arsene is a legend, no manager is better in my opinion, but his one flaw is his stubborness. He persists with these terrible players (denilson especially-dealing with him for a whole season at DM was a joke, especially when he should have bought in a player due to flaminis departure) as though to prove a point. He cant pick gems everytime unfortunently, bendtner and denilson are definently not arsenal quality! We have been patient with them long enough!

I don’t think you will find anyone involved in football, who has ever played or managed the game, who thinks sticking someone on the bench when they’re fit is better or more advantageous for them than being played out of position.

In his last two games Bentdner has one assist at a crucial stage in the FA cup game, and then another even more crucial intervention with a goal in the Ipswich game. So saying this “experiment” of playing him out wide is a failure and should be stopped is frankly ridiculous.

Not least for the obvious joy and skip in his step, it has given a player who has been beset by injuries for the last 12 months.

Have a look at yourself and wonder why it is exactly you decided to run yet another Arsenal blog.

JIN – Bendtner may not be good enough and I think you’re right to say that he hasn’t consistently played well but I think the number in red kind of suggests you can’t argue that it was a lucky touch or even if it was that it bounced away from him! It was pretty much perfect for the situation. After the first touch the ball was positioned perfectly in front of him to run on to it.

I would also disagree that it is accepted that he has reached his full potential. As that goal showed and some of the others he’s scored this season in the carling cup he can produce some quality moments and goals. Its just a matter of producing them more often and sometimes this is simply down to needing a run of games as many have said or perhaps some confidence. I know he appears very arrogant so people assume he is always full of confidence but I think its quite possible that he feels differently to what he says and when he plays badly, which he has done on several occassions in an arsenal shirt, it does actually knock his confidence.

Don’t forget he scored over 30 goals in the reserve league when he was 19 which doesn’t happen very often so he must have some kind of ability.

Is he the first squad player to be played out of position – give me a break…..right wing is a far better position than “bench warmer”. If Nik wants to play that is his lot – he will never de-throne RVP and if Chamakh gets some goals he will firm as No.2 striker. Where is your article making excuses for Eboue having to play right-back?

Niks poor first touch has continually been part of his game since I have had the opportunity to watch Arsenal games over the last 2 years. The points raised by those making constructive criticism of Bendtners game has not arisen since Wenger started playing him on the wing.

Bendtner just needs to find some shooting consistency and calmness, something henry had.

He misses a lot, but I agree that that is, on the flip side a good criticism as it mean he has good anticipation and awareness, and the shooting is something that can be worked on. Once he figures out how to shoot accurately given a short space of time, he’ll be really good.

He was very frustrating at first, given the reputation that came with him into the first team. But to me he has improved, and I think by the second half of next season he would be quite something.
