Bendtner’s future on the left?

nicklas_bendtner

Arsene Wenger has hinted that Nicklas Bendtner’s recent move out wide could prove to be a permanent one.

The Dane had previously made his name as a central striker, putting his height, strength and aerial ability to good use as something of a target man for the club, but has found competition for that spot increased this season with the arrival of Marouane Chamakh.

And with the recent return to fitness of Robin van Persie, who has been in fine goal-scoring form for Arsenal, Bendtner might have to get used to offering something from a wide position.

Initially playing on the right of a front three, the 23-year-old scored an excellent opener in the Carling Cup semi-final by cutting in from the left, and Wenger thinks this could be a good tactic for him.

“He didn’t surprise me with that goal against Ipswich, because he works on that in training. He is very good on the left side. In fact if he has to play wide, I think he would prefer to play on the left so he can cut inside.”

The kind of goal Bendtner scored against Ipswich became something of a Thierry Henry trademark during the French striker’s time at the club, and when training with Arsenal recently Wenger believes the two players may have spoken to each other about playing as a striker from the left.

“Thierry spoke to him,” the boss revealed. “I don’t know what was said but I saw them speak together. I don’t know what people speak about in the dressing room.

“It can be about football, it can be about cars, it can be about anything. But Thierry likes to give advice to the other strikers.”

Although it will take more than a goal against Ipswich to convince me, it is an interesting idea, and we’ve seen big Nick do that before. It could be good for his all-round game to play there for a while, so he can add classy strikes like that to his game, as well as his tap-ins and headers. Some time in a different role can be good for a player, and it wouldn’t be the first time the manager has tried it out.

However, won’t it be equally tricky for Bendtner to dislodge in-form wingers Nasri and Walcott as it would be to get in ahead of van Persie and Chamakh?

And it doesn’t say much for the future of Andrey Arshavin if so many players are being preferred to him out there, even those who aren’t familiar with the position.

It’ll be interesting to see how we line up against Huddersfield today.

I'm 23-years-old and currently living in Bristol, studying to be a journalist. I've been hooked on Arsenal since I was about 10, and as much as I sometimes wish I could stop, I can't give them up. Favourite player of all time would have to be Patrick Vieira for the sheer passion with which he played the game.

I stumbled across this site… Goddamn, Newsnow!

I like how you make up quotes, when you obviously have nothing to write about.

I really hope Bendtner doesnt play out left as hes not good enough. The guy picks out one pass every 13 games and suddenly becomes a left winger, laughable.

Or maybe Wenger could just accept that he’s not good enough full stop and move him on. And buy somebody who is. Apparently, that’s how success works.

No new signings promised by Arsene. So close to something big…and myopia sends it on its way. Bye bye glory.

Can’t wait to watch Denilson and Bendtner running around cluelessly for more games.

Still, at least we’ll be able to parade the balance sheets around Islington on the open-top bus in May.

True. We won with a weakened (rotated) team, Ferguson did the same yesterday and had a scare also, with games coming up thick and fast it’s a necessity not an option and we came through it.

Bendtner won the match for us today (along with Cesc) and scored the crucial goal in the last game.

And niether of the players who you will no doubt continue to hate and abuse regardless of their performances will not be playing in any of the big games anyway.

Why do you people not realise that it is not feasible to have a squad full of superstars and some of the players have to be squad players. Firstly the only teams in the world who can afford to do this are Citeh, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Secondly look at the trouble that citeh and madrid are having keeping their players happy and the impact on team spirit this has.

One player taking quite a bit of stick is Arshavin, of the 279 Premier League players having either scored or assisted a goal, AA23 is a credible 10th, considering he is obviously out of sorts imagine how much of an asset he can be for us when he re-discovers form.

Nice link there berg10. And note that though he’s 10th overall he is an even better 3rd in terms of assists alone. As you say, not too bad for a 3rd choice winger (although he’ll be playing more now that Nasri is injured).

I didn’t spot the fact he’s joint 3rd in the assists only, and in great company too (Drogba and Rooney). Recently in commentary it was mentioned that although Rooney is having a barren scoring spell his assists are making up for it this season, same then for Shava.

I don’t hate or abuse regardless of their performance ever, quite the contrary, I only criticise players solely based on their performance.

Thats my point. Based solely on performances, Bendtner has been one of our best players in the past few games, yet you still insist he is clueless. Also his goalscoring record in his career (at arsenal only) is scoring almost a goal every 2 games. And most of these appearances are as a sub. That is a pretty good record considering it includes the time when he was a young player of 19 – 21 years old and the entire time he hasn’t been first choice.

42 goals in 141 games is his Arsenal record. 22 goals in 88 games is his Arsenal Premier League record. That’s one in four. God knows where you got 1 goal in 2 games as his overall record (did you mean for this season perhaps?).

I watched him closely yesterday. He’s clumsy, awkward, absolutely hopeless at times. Best player in the past few games you say? What at? It certainly can’t be as a footballer.

He’s a mid-table player, if that. I think he’d struggle at Blackpool actually. If that’s what you’re happy with in an Arsenal striker, then fine, that’s up to you. Me, i really want more. And i expect more.

And the same goes for Denilson and Squillaci. Diaby, well, he’s an enigma wrapped up in a mystery. But i think he’s a good squad player to have.

Personally, i think it’s not bad to be critical sometimes, that’s how you achieve success. And I wonder if enough questions are being asked at the Emirates (and i’m a big Wenger supporter).

My bad. My memory for arsenal stats has let me down! I got the appearances mixed up and was thinking roughly 40 goals in roughly 85 games! Thanks for putting me right.

I agree that his performances aren’t great but the thing is that when he has a run of games he usually scores. Personally I am willing to sacrifice 1 striker not playing good football and being a bit clumsy if he can score more than 20 goals a season and I think that Bendtner would do if he played every game (not that I’m suggesting he should – just that I think he’s capable of doing it).

The reason I say he’s been one of our best players in the past few games is simply because he has scored important goals (I don’t care how they go in, as long as they go in) and he won the penalty that won us the game the other day. For a striker, I think that results on the pitch (goals and assists) are more important than if they can do fancy flicks or dribble past 4 players. Yes its nice but frankly we have lots of other players who do this and I don’t mind having a striker in the squad who only scores goals. Give him time and I think that he will score many more.

Well, personally I’d like to see a striker capable of a bit more than falling over or getting a lucky deflection. Jesus, if that’s all that’s required then Arsenal can sign me for a couple of pints and a new pair of jeans.

Lets agree to disagree. We won’t get anywhere here.
