I will admit, it would be incredibly easy to avoid talking about the Newcastle game, as it still pains me to think that we threw away a FOUR goal lead in just 22 minutes. Nonetheless, here it goes…
I found a decent stream for the match, hooked it up to my TV and it was absolutely fantastic (apart from when the stream went offline, causing me to miss our 4th!). We played so well, and it looked like we could have written ourselves in the record books if we wanted to – unfortunately, we actually did in the end! Seriously though, at half-time, I was convinced that we could have scored another 4 if we wanted to!
But that fantasy soon turned into a nightmare – as soon as Abou Diaby lost his inexperienced head, in my opinion. With his history of receiving “hard” tackles in the the North East of England, you can understand that it was hard for Diaby to let Joey Barton’s tactics slide – but I’m sure even he knows now, that he should have kept calm – like Sagna did when Bowyer stamped on him at Birmingham. Don’t retaliate and hope that the referee and/or FA do their job and take necessary action.
Although, as the entire footballing world knows, the referee didn’t exactly help.
I’ve been going to football regularly for about 12 years now (don’t worry, I’m only 19!), and I have NEVER seen such a bad refereeing display. Phil Dowd was absolutely disgraceful. One of the most important roles for a referee is to look after the safety of the players. The official from Stoke certainly didn’t do that. He looked more concerned about punishing players for time-wasting, dissent (rightly so!) and getting caught in Kevin Nolan headlocks – rather than preventing the initial incidents causing these retaliations. I’m sure you’ll agree with me here, I never want to see Dowd referee an Arsenal match again!
Moving on, our growing amount of injuries is turning into a problem – which I assumed in a very recent article of mine. Despite not spending in January, I feel Wenger is growing feelings of concern too. As I type this, both Fabregas and RVP have withdrawn themselves from of their International squads, due to “flu”. Clearly, Arsene wants them to be fit and ready for this Saturday’s home game against Wolves – and rightly so!
Arsenal also haven’t confirmed how serious the injury to Johan Djourou is. Worryingly, there are rumours suggesting that the Swiss defender could be out for around a month – which, if true, would be a disaster.
Despite everything, I still remain confident for our title hopes. But I have to admit, that I’m beginning to feel less and less confident. When it comes to the Arsenal injury table, there’s not many that are more paranoid than me. We need to keep players fit, and get our injured players back as soon as possible. However I know, with our medical team, this is a huge ask.
On a brighter note, the weekends football results were pretty satisfying, in the end. We owe Wolves and Liverpool a big North London thank you, but let’s not expect results to go our way like they did last weekend. We must concentrate on ourselves and move on from the nightmare we suffered at St. James Park, starting by beating a revitalised Wolves side, managed by the wonderfully miserable, Mick McCarthy.
Come on you reds.
