Arsenal stage a stunning second-half resurgence

arsenal-barcelona
Arsenal staged a stunning second-half resurgence to clinch a 2-1 victory over Champions League holders Barcelona in the first leg of their last 16 tie at the Emirates Stadium.

Numerous chances were spurned in a pulsating first half, but it was the combination of Lionel Messi and Villa which saw the Spaniard clinch the game’s only goal with a finish of outstanding conviction.

Arsenal refused to be dictated in the second half, and the hosts’ inspired comeback saw Robin Van Persie level with a stunning volley from an acute angle, before substitute Andrei Arshavin slammed in a second five minutes later.

It was the North London club’s first ever victory over the Catalan giants, and it sees Arsene Wenger’s side assume the ascendancy in the tie ahead of the second leg at the Nou Camp.

Samir Nasri assumed a starting berth in the Arsenal midfield after passing a late fitness test and Emmanuel Eboue slotted in at right back to replace the suspended Bacary Sagna, while the much vaunted Messi formed a three-pronged attack with David Villa and Pedro for the visitors.

Wenger spent the week determined to assure all and sundry that his side had bridged the gulf in class which saw the Premier League club vanquished 6-3 on aggregate by the Catalan giants last year, and the hosts began the match confidently, holding their own both in terms of possession and purpose.

Arsenal carved out the first chance of the game as Theo Walcott hurtled down the left, but his incisive run was followed by a final ball towards Robin van Persie which drifted awry while Nasri implored him to look to his left.

A minute later, Victor Valdes was called into action after another rasping run from Walcott culminated in Cesc Fabregas dinking an exquisite through ball to Van Persie, whose first time shot was parried away by the Barcelona keeper.

The hosts would be made to pay for such profligacy in the final third.

Messi has scored 13 goals in his last 11 Champions League starts including four in one game against Arsenal, but he was unable to capitalise on a glorious opportunity to part emulate his display last season as he raced clear on goal in the 15th minute, only to dink his shot wide of both Wojciech Szczesny and the far post. A collective and audible sigh of relief went around the Emirates.

But then Villa made his mark: Messi hared down the right, before threading an exquisitely-weighted delivery through for Villa, who kept his composure to slide the ball beyond Szczesny.

Messi might have doubled his side’s lead in the 38th minute as he rounded off a sweeping counter-attack with a close-range header into an empty net, only for the offside flag to intervene. Replays suggest the Argentine may have had good reason to feel aggrieved.

Neither manager deemed it necessary to make a change at the break, and Arsenal came roaring out of the blocks in a similarly breathless exchange at the start of the second half, but the hosts were unable to muster a clear-cut opportunity.

The hosts enjoyed a period of sustained possession on the hour mark, with the best chance seeing Gerard Pique agonisingly outstrip Van Persie in meeting Fabregas’s teasing delivery to the near post from close range.

Messi then squandered another goalscoring opportunity which he would normally have dispatched as he latched on to a deft through ball from Iniesta, only to flick the ball wide of the near post with Szczesny going to ground as Arsenal had another major reprieve.

Wenger and Guardiola each made substitutions in the 68th minute, with intentions in stark contrast as Seydou Keita replaced the goalscorer Villa, while the expansive Arshavin was swiftly followed on to the field by Nicklas Bendtner.

But then the match was turned on its head in the space of five scintillating minutes: Clichy marauded down the left and found Van Persie with a slick through ball down the left, and the Dutchman found the back of the net with a rasping strike from an improbable angle to level.

Arshavin’s introduction proved an inspired one from Wenger, who was left to punch the air with jubilation as the Russian rounded off another brilliant counter-attack with an emphatic finish from Nasri’s pacey run and cut-back.

Arsenal preserved their slender lead in a riveting final seven minutes, and the Premier League side clung on to hold the advantage ahead of the second leg at the Nou Camp on March 8.

Brilliant end to the match! The substitutions of especially Arshavin, but also Bendtner, helped change the match. Still a huge job ahead of us at Camp Nou, but it not impossible! Barcelona will be without Piqué in their central defense, and I know we can score at Camp Nou!

    GAME ON!!

I can’t believe some people thought we played well. We were absolutely mauled for an hour. They were toying with us, and the linesman helped us out on more than one occasion.

Great result, mind, don’t want to be pessimistic, but the away goal means the tie’s more or less over. Barca tend not to win away in these knockout ties, but they’re almost invincible at home.

I just feel privileged that we get to share a pitch with the greatest footballing side of all time. They play how we THINK we play.

CescFabregas(4) would smack you round the head. Honestly. We played well and decided to be threatening with possesion instead of keeping it like barca. End of the day it went our way. Was a good match and the team did us proud.

We have sagna coming back a much more
fitter nasri in the secound leg and if fab can
play better in the secound leg then he did
Today then we have a chance.
Its only messi that is the dangerman the rest
Of then are overated , they pass the ball a lot
But dont go nowhere it a lot of side ways movement
Until messi gets the ball, we keep messi under raps.
    It game done.
I have to say that jack wilshere and szczseny was
Class tonight .i dont think arsenal played that good
Tonight because cesc wasent playing that good and
Song was trying to hard and nasri was not match fit
So i think in the secound leg with these three playing.
Better and sagna coming back thing look good.

no doubt he is a star, i love the way he always fools the opposition just as he gets to the ball creating instant space for himself. Not to mention his slide trap the ball and get up running. Definently a future legend at the club.

I hate how most arsenal supporters have this mentality that ‘its barca so even if we get bundled out at least it was to a great team’. Stuff that we are the mighty arsenal we should fear no-one, i don’t care it we go to nou camp, the players will be thinking we can win there, so the fans should aswel. Fuck barca, and fuck messi (i don’t care if hes the best in the world, i hate the wanka for what he did to us last season), im sick of everyone saying they are the best footballing side in the world, and we are second. We don’t spend 35million on players every season to get there. Its our turn to take the reigns and be the better team!!!!!

Eh, Ye they had the ball and had the control in the 25-30 min to the end of the first half well ye thats Barcelona is fraking great team and able to do that vs any other. But that was it thats what people slap us in face!!!! 30 min of domination and cuting our last line with short passes (risk Wenger knew) and that would be in vain if the line was playing like it should or if we were effective with our chance “and we had them a lot in first”. The Proffesor wanted us to play our game HE didnt want to give up and play with 6 defenders and and 3 Defending midfielders or cut messi leg, thats why we love Arsenal and Wenger. And look at RVP shots full of desire he try hard and he make mistakes (but he did it) and our young skipper mistakes(not that he didnt had nice passes) all indicate on big pressure from media and responsobility that had huge effect on the game. But wanted to say then this never happend for us, when top players fail to deliver the result someone else step in and take the responsobility even if this was from the young players like Wilsher,Szczesny, and god damn i aways liked Koscielny and had faith he will get better, but he was fraking awesome. And to point only RVP and Ebue(well sadly he is not same guy from 2006) are in the best age. We EARN this win and wont say Barca wont earn it to if they won, it was damn good football 90 min, best in the world.
HAIL Red Army supporting 100% for 90 min even when we were 1 down and that was worty life memory.
Emirates was Wonderful. wish was there :(
    HAIL ARSENAL !!!

so every single one of you are blatantly ignoring the fact Barcelona had 1 perfectly good goal dis-allowed , messi put the keeper on his arse and missed from 5 yards, he then had 2 one on ones he put in the side netting and you didn’t touch the ball for 80 minutes ?
Based on what footballing fact do you go to the Camp Nou and expect messi and co to miss the same chances…great RESULT but plllleeeeeease look at the glaringly bloody obvious, the fortress Camp Nou will see them through , they dominated the game on you’re turf , they will spank you on theirs…or do you really believe messi and co will have another off night even though they ran you ragged doing so …honesty please people would be nice …like..

Jesus what a great result and a chance now that we didn’t think we would have , we got out of jail and hopefully can make it count out there , it will be tough but you never know you’re luck..all i read is how good wilshire was ? another Joe Cole FACT !…wont get a regualr England spot until he is 25 and beats women up outside nightclubs..nice !

Arsenal missed just as many chances. Yes Barca were incredible in possesion but as we have learnt to our cost many times possesion means nothing unless it leads to chances and goals. And the stats show that we had more shots on target (ok only by 8 to 7 but it wasn’t as if we created nothing) and the same attempts off target.

Yes it will be a tough game in the nou camp but without Pique they will be vulnerable in the final 15 minutes again and I would back us to get at least 1 goal. Its just a matter of stopping their attack and with Djourou and Koscielny we are much better equipped to do so than last year when we had the slow and clumsy Silvestre and Campbell. They are quicker more agile and they may not be so good in the air but that doesn’t matter against Barca.

He’ll be first choice in the Euros. Thats why the England manager has said he is building a team around him. He was the best player in a team thats just beaten the best team in the world. Regardless of how much possesion we had (47% according to the bbc and 33% according to skysports if your interested. How can they be so different?) people are bound to say that he is wonderful because there was an Englishman competeing with the midfield that won the World cup!

No one is saying that we’re through and yes Messi missed 1 very good chance and 1 other chance but last year at the emirates we were completely outplayed for pretty much the entire match (unlike last night when we actually managed to put some passes together at times) and we managed to scrape a draw so why is it so bad to hope that we can scrape a draw again?

How does it sound to you if I said that Milan couldn’t possibly be that bad again and tottenham were just lucky that robinho and ibra had an off day and gave no credit to tottenham. Actually what happened was that Milan were awful but spurs did play well. And Barca were awesome but Arsenal deserve credit because they were too.

and to think i thought (as you claimed reguarly) were an impartial party and lover of the great game. You’re turning more and more into a blind scum supporter as the days go by. Open the other eye matey,we didnt touch the ball for 80mins did we? what a load of shit, besides a patch in the first half it was relatively even in terms of possession, and even the commentators were saying how amazing we were doing and playing our own game (something teams never do against barca).

Put the keeper on his arse? oh you mean how the big pole spread himself well and did all he could to put messi off the shot. The one he put into the side netting was also a relatively tight angle so that shouldnt be classed as a certain goal scoring opportunity! How about the good goal scoring opportunities RVP had, which by his lofty standards should of been scored or at the very least troubling the keeper. Or the abidal interception that stopped RVP from scoring a header into an empty net!

Another joe cole? another bullshit comment. He will be taking out the trash and replacing either of fat frank or stevie G in no time. You must be upset because your supposed CB prodigy dawson is falling by the wayside and wont be in the england side anytime soon. As for lennon haha no chance.

How can you say that. They had to double up against him after 10minutes because they couldn’t handle him 1 on 1. He wasn’t the best player on the team but he certainly wasn’t the worst. Because he came off (and RvPs goal) they changed their style of play to get another goal and that left the space for nasri to run into for the 2nd.
