Arsenal legend Liam Brady believes criticism of manager Arsene Wenger is unfair, despite the club’s recent lack of trophies.
The Gunners have not won any silverware since the FA Cup in 2005, but Brady believes the Frenchman has done a great job in keeping the team competitive in that time.
As well as moving to a new stadium, Arsenal have faced new competition from big-spending Chelsea and Manchester City.
“I’m inside the club and we haven’t won anything for a few years,” Brady said. “But we have been there or thereabouts and what Arsene Wenger, the team, and the club has done is marvellous because it hasn’t been a level playing field.
“Manchester United have had the advantage over everybody for the last ten years and then Roman Abramovich came along and changed the landscape with his money and now Manchester City are on the scene with their money, so it’s not been easy for Arsenal.
“But we’ve always been contenders in the last five years since we won a trophy and the tenure of Arsene Wenger has been absolutely fantastic. I think it’s time to keep our heads now, we can win the league and if we win tomorrow afternoon we can win the FA Cup.”
The former midfielder also praised the emergence of youngster Jack Wilshere this season, but hopes the media hype will not go overboard and prove disruptive to his development.
“I’d like everybody to keep their feet on the ground,” he added. “Not only Jack Wilshere but all the young players that burst upon the scene in England,” added Brady. “The media really do exaggerate about players and that expectation did affect Theo Walcott when he was 17.
“One thing I’ll say about Jack is that he has a real determination to improve all the time, and even though it was backs against the rope at Barcelona he did keep his end up well. They’re only kids really and I think he’s only going to get better – but let’s not get carried away.”
