Will There Now Be A Exodus At Arsenal?

Samir-Nasri_1202636

Arsenal went to the Reebok Stadium on Easter Sunday hoping to resurrect their title hopes, but instead it was Bolton Wanderers who came back from the dead.

After the Trotters’ 5-0 mauling by Stoke in their FA Cup semi-final, they responded by showing the ability to kill off opposition which has so deserted the Gunners of late with a dramatic late 2-1 win.

Owen Coyle was delighted with the way his players show the cojones to keep going even after a saved penalty was followed swiftly by an Arsenal equaliser, and when Tamir Cohen celebrated his 90th-minute winner by revealing a t-shirt in tribute to his recently-deceased father, a degree of poignancy was added to a big moment in the club’s season.

The significance of the result for Cohen and Bolton is, however, obscured by its relevance to this year’s title race, i.e. all but knocking Arsenal out of it.

Nine points behind leaders Manchester United with four games to go, they are now instead looking over their shoulder at Manchester City as they try to avoid sliding back further and into fourth place. Any schadenfreude revelled in on Saturday as Champions League-chasing neighbours Tottenham stumbled will have been short-lived.

The defeat may have ended a 16-game unbeaten run in the league for the Gunners, but they were simply dropping at a crucial stage of the season to maintain a credible threat. Rescinding a two-goal lead to Spurs (for the second time this season) plus failure to beat Blackburn, West Brom or Sunderland since the start of March put paid to any hopes of Arsenal claiming a quarter-share of the quadruple they were on for such a short time ago.

The sight of Wojciech Szczesny sat stunned inside his goal at the final whistle was reminiscent of William Gallas’s sit-in at Birmingham back in February 2008 when Eduardo da Silva’s broken leg kicked off that season’s capitulation. In fact, Birmingham have a lot to answer for, what with this season’s Carling Cup final win heralding this season’s breakdown.

Arsene Wenger has gamely accepted culpability for the defeat, diving on the grenade to avoid his players taking the flak: “I feel the players have had an outstanding attitude this season. They are not to blame. If somebody is to blame, it’s me. I pick the team,” he said, garnering precisely no objections from anyone. “We still lack maturity, experience and calm in important situations.”

It would be real task for anyone to total up the column inches dedicated to Wenger’s refusal to sign more proven, experienced players since they last lifted a trophy in 2005, but now he could be faced with a fresh worry regarding his personnel: will he be able to keep hold of his best players this summer?

Talk of Cesc Fabregas’s long-mooted move to Barcelona has died down but has never completely disappeared. His presence this season has had an air similar to Cristiano Ronaldo’s final year at United about it. Should Barca beat rivals Real Madrid to glory on both domestic and European fronts over the next month, what better way for them to build on that success than the signing their much-coveted youth product?

While most Arsenal fans have had well over a year to get used to the idea of their club captain leaving – as they always have done ever since Tony Adams retired - the prospect of losing Samir Nasri has only recently emerged as a possibility in the minds of many. The Frenchman’s form his mirrored that of his club this season. He looked the best player in the country at the back end of last year, but the loss of his scoring touch has been a factor in Arsenal’s downturn. Now, with little over a year left on his contract, the 23-year-old may be tempted to look elsewhere in his search for a first winner’s medal. The terminally prudent Wenger may be forced to cash in on the French playmaker while he can, in order to recoup some of the big fee paid out for him three years ago.

Gael Clichy is also a little more than a year from walking out of the club for nothing. While in footballing terms the left-back may be easily replaceable, he is the only surviving member of the 2003-04 Invincibles squad still at the club (Fabregas did not make a league appearance, while surely Jens Lehmann won’t still be at Arsenal next season? Won’t he?). Therefore, Clichy is one of the most experienced members of the current squad, a damning indictment if ever there was one.

Just how many other players on the Gunners’ roster could be tempted to seek pastures new? Andrei Arshavin only joined the Gunners after declaring his “dreams” of joining several other clubs around Europe, while Robin van Persie would surely have attracted far more interest were it not for the persistent injuries which have reduced him to just 152 Premier League appearances in his seven years at the club.

If Wenger is not careful, then his inability to move things forward could lead to him taking a big step back.

Nasri will leave for almost nothing this season. Fabregas will go, Clichy will go, even though he has his faults, he is still better than what Gibbs has showed and is one of our players who genuinely shows any desire. All the crap like Denilson, Diaby, Arshavin, Squillaci etc. will stay and we will be a mid-table club thanks to Wenger. None of these players will keep loving Arsenal if we aren’t ever going to win anything. WENGER OUT

Think that we will see our better players now leave. Wenger has publicly stated that he “promises” a trophy will be delivered the past 2 seasons and if us fans are angry then the players must be too. Cesc, Nasri, Clichy, Arshavin will leave maybe RVP too.

Just can’t wait for the next few weeks, the club will come out with the standard pre season ticket renewal deadline with promises of world class additions and ambition, then the day after renewal deadline Wenger will come out and say, “actually I am happy with my squad, Vermaelen coming back is like a new signing” blah blah blah.

Everything that comes out of the clubs mouth is lies, lies, lies and we have been fed them for 6 years now.

As a huge Arseanl fan: While wenger stays I’ll support every other team 8) we play against until he goes. I celebrated madly last Wednesday when VDV scored the equaliser for Spurs and cheered madly again when Cohen scored the winner for Bolton.

No. I think as a true fan, the sooner Wenger goes the better, and this will only be achieved by beating beaten all the time and crap results. So yes, I was THRILLED when Spurs came back to 3 – 3 – was over the moon when COHEN scored the winner and I will be cheering loudly for UTD next week to stuff us. I’ll be back cheering for Arsenal as soon as we start winning games under a new manager. As soon as we get a trophy I’ll be singing my lungs out for the Arsenal. Untiol then, come on you reds next week. 8)

Now arsenal will struggle to keep their third or forth position.

I think, in the next 5 games, Arsenal will win only one game against Villa.

I am expecting other game results will be lose ot draw.

It is very difficult to get Chamipons league position now.

You are an absolute disgrace. If you are a true Arsenal fan then I hope you never attend a match again. When times are hard, you still, no matter what, back your team. You certainly do not cheer the opponents. You are probably just another one of these clueless idiots that do not even understand football or how it is played. You’re basically saying you only support Arsenal when we win and when we get a trophy you’ll be back supporting us. Well you’re not welcome back! You disgust me with your selfish attitude. Wenger’s made mistakes but the Arsenal name is worth more than any manager or player and if you turn your back on our badge, you are not a fan!!

Fabregas will go I reckon as he probably feels most let down and unlikely to give him another chance, personally I don’t think Nasri will or should he was unheard of in all honesty until this season so owes the club and Wenger, as for the rest do they matter ? doubt it !

Almunia, Clichy, Djourou, Diaby and Bentedner should all go. Nasri has had his head turned by his agent and Inter Milan’s offer plus would be amazed if we manage to keep Cesc.

Would def look to sign Gary Cahill and Leighton Baines plus a striker as well as Chamberlin from Southampton

i think some so called fans here are the reason why Arsenal is the way it is.right now we need fans that will think with their heads and not just with their hearts.think for a moment you buy every season ticket and dont even think about boycotting the way things are being run. honestly, everyone that thinks anon is an idiot and blah needs to really look at themselves. All y’all talkn about supporting the club thru thick and thin etc is just as the same as the stubborness wenger has about trying to win trophies without really addressing practical issues.grow up,stop cussing and if you cant see that the season is over not cause we are not being real fans but because the philosophy is wrong and unless we get a drastic failure this season there is no chance whatsover for drastic changes, the man wenger even had the nerve to come out and say we wont change the philosophy and by that he doesnt mean our free flowing but the way we waste chances upfront and for now despite all thats happend he thinks we only need to work on our defense. please guys wake up and do arsenal a favour, stop trying to cheer up the team to a death when the problem is the manager, he needs to really see the extent of his flaws this time and the closer we finish this season to top the more idiotic nonsense we will hear from him

It does make me laugh that the attitude is that players like Nasri and Fabregas will leave because they have been let down.

Who was it again that tried a ridiculous back heel on the edge of our box against Barca, or who missed a one on one with the goal keeper yesterday? I can tell you for certain that neither were Arsene Wenger.

The players can’t be given a free ride here. Wenger may have been myopic but he has shown great patience, loyalty and faith in this group of players. He has given them long contracts, time to develop and even now is protecting them. What does he get in response? Ill advised media interviews, endless flirting with other clubs and now hints that they may go somewhere else to win something.

They have been given every chance to win something by Arsenal and Wenger. Paid lavishly, mistakes forgiven and time to grow in to the players they now are. They have failed every single bit as much as Wenger.

I have had major doubts about Wenger ever since the beginning of the 2008/2009 season which ultimately saw us finish 4th and an astonishing 18 points behind winners Manchester United. My doubts about his policies is by no way, shape or form newly founded. I have indeed been venting my anger towards him for the best part of three years. Convincing myself season after season that he will change as he is not daft; he knows the recipe for winning. However, as an avid and long serving Arsenal fan he has deeply let me down with his refusal to see the writing on the wall. He has planted the seeds for failure for 6 seasons and as a result he has come to lose the composure and calm that once made him the pinnacle of admiration. He is now a regular at showing poor sportmanship, embarrasing touch line antics (constant throwing of water bottles) and infuriating post match comments. What he falis to understand is that he is the making of his own downfall and at the root of the club’s on the pitch problems. How much longer can we give him to heed to what the fans and the media have been uttering for six seasons and which his captain has just reinforced with comments last week. Please open your eyes Wenger as another season like this will surely see you tarnish your legacy and be forced into resignation. I’m afraid that the all too common adage that ‘no one is bigger than the club’ does not apply to Arsenal as Arsene Wenger clearly is.

Wenger says he will buy the players. But can you trust him to keep his word?A few seasons ago he said he had some super players referring to crocked players like RVP and a few others. We know what happened.
I couldn’t believe it when Wenger bought Silverter and Campbell, both over the hill if not the mt. The red faced cunt will never any of his quality player to a rival team.I bet hw had a good a laugh when the FM paid him 850000 BP
I will reserve judgement until the FM has bought the quality players.IF it’s case of Silvester, better promote some of the promising youth players.

Dermot D. and the other A.K.B.’s on here – You are not interpreting what Greg Bryant is saying correctly. If you read his post slowly, and THINK on what he’s saying, you’ll realise he is being anything BUT “selfish” ! In fact, he’s putting the CLUB ahead of the manager, which is how it should be.
In your haste to vilify him, you ( deliberately ?) overlook that what he means is; he is prepared to sacrifice short term success in return for longer term GAIN. He also said that he will be back to supporting the team AFTER Wenger is gone ( a new manager ) – i.e. we will have a much better chance of winning matches without Wenger, and trophies will hopefully come as a RESULT of that.
What he’s essentially saying is “you’ve got to be cruel to be kind.” It’s a form of “tough love”.I happen to agree with his position, and he should be commended for that.
If you truly love something, you want the best for it.By wanting us to drop points to other teams, he is trying to make a point. No-one is bigger than the club.

Roto – In case you hadn’t noticed, Arsenal had already “fucked up” BEFORE the Bolton match. So by that stage it didn’t matter much anyway, did it ? That was what Greg Bryant was alluding to in his post above.
We “fucked up” ( yet again ) because of Wenger’s negligence in refusing to buy a goalkeeper, defender and defensive midfielder, in the transfer windows. AND because of his tactical ineptitude, inability to motivate players, and a dozen other reasons, which you would know about, had you been following the debate.
Before the end of LAST season, repeat LAST season – Wenger said “Judge me in May.” So he should have gone THEN.But here we are in May AGAIN,and I suppose you’ll be saying “give him another year.” Sorry. He’s done well for us in the past, but his time’s run out.Wenger, you’re an honourable man. So do the honourable thing, and resign!

Spectrum, you’re an idiot. Many fans want Wenger to leave, but that doesn’t mean they start cheering for Tottenham when they score. How is that for the good of the club? So explain to me how Greg cheering actually helps our club? My point is not that he is a disgrace for wanting Wenger out, my point is that he is selfish for cheering the opponent. Which I believe is unforgivable. Oh and don’t condescend me you arrogant peasant. You don’t know anything about me or what I do, so don’t you come on here telling me to read things slowly and think! Greg clearly states that he will come back and sing once we have a trophy. How can you justify that? Isn’t that the clearest definition of a glory supporter? So your arguement is “by wanting us to drop points to other teams, he is trying to make a point. No-one is bigger than the club.” I would personally, as an Arsenal fan, rather win every match and win the title, with Arsene Wenger, then want us to lose just to have a reason to part company with the Alsatian. I am not here to protect Wenger, or make a case as to why he should stay/go. But at the same time I am not willing to read that fans of this wonderful club cheer when other teams score against them. That is the highest count of treason and blasphemy in my humble opinion. Should Wenger have signed players in January and in August (2010)? Yes, and no trophies is clear evidence that this needed to be done. Is there a clear reason as to why we implode come March? There must be. Am I 100% frustrated with the club, team and manager? Yes! Because if we can see it why can’t they? But am I ever, ever, ever, going to cheer VDV or Cohen when they score against us? Never. And there lies my arguement! So Spectrum, I shall put this in the nicest possible way: Shut up, you neanderthal!
