Arsenal fans want prizes not profits, Wenger

Arsene Wenger With Champions League Trophy

Since moving to the Emirates in 2006 Arsene Wenger has become increasingly prudent in his spending so as not to put Arsenal in any financial difficulties, due to the debt Arsenal were already in from the building of it.

So the Frenchman had the responsibility of remaining competitive whilst still spending relatively small amounts of money, although Wenger was not actually ordered to do this, he felt it was sensible to do so. However, not one trophy has been lifted at the Emirates(other than the Emirates Cup) and this could be due to Wenger’s lack of spending with his transfer preference being cheaper, young and inexperienced, possible stars of the future rather than stars of the present. This has made Arsenal a very profitable club as Wenger usually either promotes from within the youth system or brings players in cheaply and sells them on for much, much more.

The Arsenal manager using the youth system however has paid off, epitomised by the emergence of Jack Wilshere, who this year has been a revelation for Arsenal and recently winning Arsenal player of the year. Currently, Wilshere is probably the best 19 year old in the world and would be worth probably in excess of £15million or £20million, this just shows how successful building from within is. Building from within through youth recruitment helps team chemistry as the players grow up with each other and forge a great understanding, an example even more successful than Arsenal who do this is F.C. Barcelona, the greatest club in the world currently and probably have the greatest club team the world has ever seen.

They value building from within above all else with their famous La Masia academy-cum-boarding school which was recently covered in The Times. However, eventhough Arsenal have a very similar system to Barcelona they obviously do not share the same success, this could be for a multitude of reasons, in Spain, particularly Catalonia Football is huge, bigger than it is in England so more children play the game, play for clubs and are scouted by Barcelona, maybe currently there is just more football talent in Spain, but the only thing that we know for sure is that Barcelona are successful and Arsenal aren’t (based on trophies).

The Gunners chief still spends a lot less then Barcelona though with Barcelona paying huge sums of money for Villa, Ibrahimovic(in a ridiculous deal and he was largely unsuccessful at Barcelona), Alves, Mascherano and even Adriano and Milito, who in my opinion did not command the transfer fees that were paid who were £8.25 million and £15.75 million respectively.

Now, Wenger would never pay amounts like that for second grade players (bar Jeffers), where Wenger has spent large sums of money, on the whole they have been good transfers, Arshavin-£15mil, Nasri-£13mil, Wiltord-£15.75mil and to add to this Wenger has made some sensational and cheap transfers Fabregas-free, Van Persie-£2.2mil, Song-£1mil, Pires-£6mil and of course the big one Thierry Henry-£8million.

But has Wenger made the club too much of a profit based organization rather than a trophy winning football club? The answer most fans would have to this is ‘yes’, simply because he doesn’t win trophies(recently anyhow) and does not make big signings which is what every fan wants him to do, we want him to capture our imagination with some big name signings, I’m sure we’d all love to see the likes of Benzema, Cahill, Sakho at Arsenal but will Wenger ever make big signings like this?

With expensive signings comes a lot of pressure, is it possible that Wenger’s scared to make big signings because they might flop and if they do flop, who will receive all the criticism? Wenger. Anyway, I feel as if I’m getting off topic now. So now for the killer question is Arsenal too much of a profit based business rather than a trophy winning football club?

Yes.

No. I think Arsenal is a club that understands the importance of both. There is good balance at Arsenal. The football is always close to trophy winning. We lost a final this year.. had we won, then this question would have been a no brainer. We won at the Emirates against both Champions League finalists. A team that can beat Barcelona is a trophy winning team… Wenger is genius and when his hard work pays off big no one can say he was lucky, because had luck been on his side he would have bagged a few titles in the past 6 years. I say not because I am a blind supporter of Arsene but because I appreciate his understanding of the world of football reflected in his previous financial prudence.

Are you kidding, what are you a banker or a sportsman? We’ve forgotten the importance of winning which is why we can no longer recruit. Balance? – mate the only balance at Arsenal is a bulging bank balance.

Luck and hard work?, the youth policy is disintegrating before our eyes. Beating barca, then being completely dismantled by them, and losing to a good many crap teams aint much to hang your hat on. We haven’t come within 10 points of winning the league for years now. You require more evidence of a failed policy? The only persons who care about this policy are the club’s bankers, the board/owners,and fans who don’t understand the importance of winning and are satisfied with the last six years and cl football. The club is complacent and drifting away from the top four. This transfer window wenger has it all to do.

Cut the wenger genius’ deadwood adrift and bring in some winners.

It’s got worse since Kroenke got involved, every club he owns has been run as a profit driven venture not a trophy winning venture. Yet I hear Supposed Arsenal fans say Hooray Kroenkes here to give us plurality, fuck off I want trophies not plurality. I couldn’t give a shit who owns the club as long as they have the same attitude as me Win, at all costs Win. I’d rather the fat Russian took over cos if your more worried about our financial results than the endof year results than your a cunt and should fuck off back to the city you prawn sandwich eating little mummy boy pricks

Profits come before trophies at Arsenal and that is total disrespect to the fans. Fans support sport teams for trophies, not profits. If this was about profits, then fans could support some real winners such as Google or some other real profitable business. Unfortunately Wenger has it all mixed up! Therefore, he should leave now!!

If all you want is big money signings go and support City or Chelsea.

We are one week into the summer – or a day if you count the CL final as the end… Do you really expect everything immediately?

Was Ashviran not a big named signing? the likes of Vieria on 4.5 million one of our best players…. so this goes against everything a big signing brings…

This whinging mentality is not seen at any other club, and I believe the fans are becoming part of the problem. If you don’t support the team, why turn up to moan? it doesn’t make sense.

Supporting a club, (and let’s face it we are one of three clubs that have won the premier league in 20 years) is not just about winning, only one team can win a year…. we have competed, we have come close. but throwing money at a problem isn’t always the answer.

I’m not saying signings aren’t needed, but complaining after a few hours of the transfer window being open is childish, and does little to add any thing constructive.

Comparing Barca success to ours is a little off the mark as well. Look back – how successful have Barca been in Europe apart from the past 5 years…. their youth project is older than ours… give it time, we are only just seeing the likes of Wilshire coming through.

Try and concerntrate on the positives, we were the only team to beat Barca, and we were robbed. We beat Man U, we beat Chelsea – a complete overhaul is not needed.

As I said try and support the team, it will make the whole process of watching football more enjoyable ofr everyone, the players, the fans, and with support results will come.

Have you ever watch Arsenal under another Manager?

Do you really think a team capable of beating Barcelona doen’t have a winning mentality?

and to say we were completely dismantled by them gives me some understanding of your knowledge of football – we were winning the tie with 30 mins to go, and then Van Persie was sent off…. so 150 mins in a 180 min tie and leading is being dismantled…?

Out of the following Big name signings who has been more successful?

    Vieria – 4.5 million
    Cesc – 500K
    Reyes – 17 Million
    Wiltord – 13 million
    Jeffers – 10 million
    Van Persie – 2.2 million
    Ashvarin – 15 million
    Gilberto 4 million
    Vermellen – 8 Million

One final question for you, which all the Sack Wenger crowd never seem to offer is who would you replace Wenger with?

a week int othe transfer market and your crying….? get a life.

As a fan I expect to support the team regardless. I don’t expect anything. It is a choice supporting a team, not something that is forced on you….. What do you expect? because you turn up, Arsene to listen to you? afterall he is only the most successful Manager in our history and your just an ungrateful fan that has only been around since we have been successful…?

the word is balance, and im afraid its not one of balance. Financial considerations are as important as a successful team, however no-one will ever convince me that the balance is correct. Wenger’s book-balancing and profit making priorities are way above the success of the team. His comments bear that out, his ambitions are absurdly modest;(2nd would be good for the next twenty years).
All Football managers have the same goals, as they were usually once players used to scrapping hard for a victory…they desire to have the best possible team to attain the highest position they can.But not Wenger!. His character isnt one of competitiveness, more of a distant analytical academic. AN educated and intelligent man with a belief in total football and morality throughout his philosophy. All very laudable qualities, but a manager doesnt have to be that rigid in his thinking. His perceived strength is in fact his weakness as he is unable to shift a mindset that fails to deal correctly with the very basic problems that confront him.A very simple problem of a weak defense has him pondering the value of centre-backs rather than spending reasonable money and sorting the problem. He may save 10 million on cheap centre-backs like squillacci, but the loss in revenue for failing to win trophies and further running the risk of losing ambitious players(nasri etc) is a price way too high to pay.In short you have to speculate to accumulate, but i am afraid i am anticipating a weak venture into the transfer market, with some cut-price bargain deals and this great club slipping further behind.
