Wenger has been given the go-ahead by Valencia to take Juan Mata to Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has been given the go-ahead by Valencia to take Juan Mata to Arsenal. The Telegraph reports that the Spanish side have opened the door for Arsenal to make a firm offer for Mata, but adds that the Gunners boss will first settle the Cesc Fabregas saga once and for all before he makes a bid.

Valencia manager Unai Emery said: “Valencia has to be prepared for a footballer having to leave, either because is he is not wanted or because some big club wants to sign him.

“We want him to stay and Mata has also expressed his wish to remain at Valencia, but we know that if a big-money offer comes in from any club and it’s good for both the player and the club, it could lead to his exit.”

Meanwhile, Barcelona midfielder Xavi has apologised to Arsenal for commenting on the Fabregas situation. Xavi claimed Fabregas had told him he was “suffering” because of his desire to join the Catalan club.

AW accused Xavi of being disrespectful, but the Spain international insists he did not mean to upset anyone. He said: “I’m sorry. My intention was not to offend Arsenal and Wenger.

“We know that Cesc has this desire to come and I said that he was suffering. But I don’t want to offend either Wenger or Arsenal. I was only looking out for the interests of Cesc and Barca. The controversy seems absurd to me. I don’t want to get into a war of words with Wenger.”

Bit late now, pal.

Staing qwith Cesc, the Independent reports that he won’t be on the flight to Germany today for the Cologne game and remains in limbo waiting to be told whether Barcelona have been successful in their efforts to sign him.

The paper adds that the same hamstring injury that prevented him from travelling to Asia tour month continues to be a problem. Funny that.

Elsehwere, the Mail says that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is furious after being fined two weeks wages for outspoken comments confirming his desire to leave Southampton. The paper adds that Arsenal will improve their £10million bid for the player – a £5m down payment with the rest in add-ons – by next week.

Even if we interested in Mata we would offer 50p and a packet of crisps. Then by the time we’d increased our offer they’d be a whole host of other clubs interested and we’d lose out. I get the feeling this summers “transfer activity” is based on making ridiculous offers for players that quite obviously won’t be accepted, then Wenger can turn round and say “we tried to sign all these players but the clubs wanted too much”. This way Wenger gets to continue project youth and increase Arsenal financial wealth (and probably his bonus!) at the expense of winning anything.

I now know what is holding up the progress of the England squad from being also rans to outright winners; it is an attitude of greed adopted by a lot of these wanna-bes lesser clubs who want to put profit before any development of these up and coming young players.

This boy will never develop to his full potential playing championship football and here is an opportunity for him to step up a class and this is being thwarted by this ridiculous fee of £12 milion . The Southampton manager should be singled out by the FA hierachy, fined and reprimanded for this act of treachery!

I don’t think it’s actually the case, I understand your frustration about Arsenal transfer policy (AW’s one BTW) but, I understand that spending £20m for a defender is ridiculous, vidic or terry or any other big name in big clubs may worth that price but not Samba or Cahill for wich I would give max £12m and that would be in a desesperate late move. Look at Jagielka bids turned down by Everton, sorry but he is not worth £10m.

About Mata, I believe Wenger may put a better price on him IF Fabregas leaves, else, no more than £18m will be offered, though £22 could interest Valencia.

Any given day….if fabregas exits…i would go for Ribery and not Mata, reasons :-
    1) Strong with if not great then good pace
    2) Proven player and has the physicality needed for the English game !!!

The only problem with Ribery is his constant injuries….on saying that he ticks the boxes then.

We had him since 7yrs old and he’s doing great. just because Arsenal come knocking don’t mean we’ll bend over and sell him cheap. We don’t need cash any more unlike when you took theo. Also Bale is Best Lefty in the world(Southampton routes again)

a player is worth what you are willing to pay for him. He is worth what ever the need is. If the need is stark, then you will pay alot more for the player than you might normally or if he is simply cover. I guess AFC do not perceive the need is as great as the price demanded for these players. I perceive most of us feel the need is greater than AFC decisionmakers do. As it relates to more defensive cover in the middle I absolutely believe that. I believe it less with a player like O-C from S’ton.

When are you all gonna realise that wenger is looking to get fired and go to Paris SG. If Arsenal let him go how much does he get? Check it out.
