Dein: Arsenal should keep Wenger

Arsenal’s former vice-chairman David Dein insists Arsene Wenger remains the best man to lead the Gunners, despite six seasons without a trophy at the Emirates Stadium.

Dein has remained in close contact with Wenger since leaving Arsenal after the pair spent 11 largely successful years working together. Arsenal have played some glorious football in recent seasons, but their last trophy was the 2005 FA Cup and that lack of silverware has heaped the pressure on Wenger.

“Arsene Wenger will admit he has had the most difficult couple of years of his career, for two reasons,” Dein told Sportsweek on BBC Radio Five Live.

“One is the fact the game is getting more competitive, we have seen more money coming in so the competition out there is more intense.

“Secondly, he has had to contend with the fact he hasn’t achieved what he would have hoped to achieve, albeit he has done remarkably well in the quality and style of play.

“But he himself, and the fans, want to win trophies. Arsene is very focused and very determined. I see him regularly, I see a man who still has as much fire in the belly today as when he started.

“He wants to win. I believe in his ability and I know for a fact he is trying very hard to improve the squad this year and I hope he does it.

“People have got to remember what he has achieved. It is easy in life to get rid of people. Then what?

“How do you follow Arsene Wenger? That is going to be the trick for the board and it is not going to be an easy exercise.”

dd coming out in support of his man just proves that the pressure on wenger is nearly at the tipping point. wenger better buy this week, he should have bought long ago but as usual he sits on his hands and it has come to this. i still don’t trust the old fool to buy the correct players that we need. but i will wait and see. but i know what’s coming and it’s the end game for wenger and he has brought it all on himself.

Even if the board sacked wenger,we will still have the same bloody Board guiding our club nothing will change until the relics on our board leave.I get the feeling Arsenal FC as a whole needs a complete overhaul.

You re a losser, gingertosser. Your likes ve been shouting ‘bring back dein’,'wenger out’ and now the man you want back says wenger is the right manager for arsenal yet you think it is ‘pressure’ at the peak. How ignorant! Moreover, where is the part dein says ‘underrate arsene at your peril’? Or re you ashame to put it in the article?

If Wenger does not sort out the defense and appoint a coach, it is better Wenger walk now for his coaching credentials will get such denting. He will best be remembered for turning Arsenal from one of the best sides in World Football to a team no quality player would consider.

Wenger need’s to sacked, today’s situation has not suddenly come about, everyone knows what needs to done yet still he is singing that he will do it his way !

We are now one week away from the start of the season and he still has not even contacted Bolton or Blackburn.

Gazedis is not doing anything and should go also.

Bring in the Russian and he would sort it out !

    Red and White forever !

Glad to see you call yourselves supporters!! Obviously of the new generation where you expect Arsenal to keep on over achieving. Wenger has made mistakes some glaringly obvious but we are where we should be with our resources. We can not compete financially with Man U, Chelsea and Man C. We are the only team to have spent 400 mil on a new stadium. Our sponsership deals don’t get renewed for another 2 years so not much new money coming in. You blame Wenger for not getting our transfer targets signed but that falls down to the board. Wenger should just give them the names and the Gazisa should do the rest. The biggest factor affecting Arsenal is the salaries. Sneider gets £200k a week, Toure at City gets £150+. They are offering Nasri £180k a week….our top earner Fabregas £110k. That is the main reason we can’t get the top quality players we crave. Get off Wengers back and start being realistic about where we should be as a club. Top in England, top 8 in Europe.
