RTK’s First Rant – On and off field matters!

Sunday is a  day of rest unless there is money to be made by Sky on broadcasting games. It is also a day of reflection after the traditional Saturday fixture. I always

have the view that sleeping on opinions makes them more likely to be consistent, logical and reasoned. I have chosen to give you all my analysis of the main talking points about Arsenal at the moment. I have to divide this into on field matters and off field matters. the news of player departures is Arsenal news, whereas the rest is contributor opinion. So here we go, not so much a rant as a thoughtful dig at the establishment.

On field matters

Please forget the frenzy of anti-Arsenal media agenda and pantomime of handbags at five yards. We need to focus on the bigger issues arising from the game rather than get distracted by the calls for the FA to hang draw and quarter our players and these can best be analysed by the match stats.

Now, from what I witnessed, there was no offensive strategy on show there at St James’s Park, perhaps the most depressing aspect of this strong side. I say strong, because even allowing for the absence of Fabregas and Nasri, the players chosen by Arsene Wenger had more than enough to beat this Newcastle side three times over, so why didn’t it happen? This my friends is mainly down to the lack of a decent striker, a striker in the genuine sense of the word, who seeks out the ball and creates his own chances if he is not getting the service that he requires from his midfielders.

Not since the departure of Thierry Henry, have we had a definitive striker that could score 30 goals a season. We almost had it in Adebayor, but his moodiness and inconsistent touch meant that we could never really rely upon him. Bendtner’s touch was even worse than Adebarndoor’s so it meant that Arsene Wenger’s chosen formation with Robin van Persie as the spearhead of a 4-3-3, was able to maintain possession but failed to have creativity in front of goal. So what of the options?

Theo Walcott’s conversion to a central striker is more myth than substance. Gervinho was a ray of sunshine yet pushed out wide, he was totally wasted, as he interpreted his brief too strictly and when he should have moved in centrally to give striking support, he was too late. Now we will have lost him for at least three games. The worst thing about watching an Arsenal attack at the moment is the sheer lack of red and white shirts in the box. If Sagna or Gibbs got behind the Geordie defence, their anticipated cross was aimed at one sometimes two players, which against five defenders meant that we were never going to score.

So either change the formation, or buy a world class striker as placing all the responsibility on RvP has not worked last season, he is world class but plays too deep and takes corners! So he is hardly likely to get 30 goals this season. There appears to be no plan B. We desperately need to defend and score goals this season, and having only 2 shots on target is an absolute disgrace for a Wenger side. We need goals against Udinese, happily a shadow of the Seria A side that finished fourth last season. Shorn of three major players in Alexis Sanchez, Gohkan Inler and Cristian Zapata, at least the task will be easier than it could have been. We need to take a two goal lead away to Italy or at least prevent them from scoring, as the defensive acumen of Italian sides at home will make the second tie much harder if they don’t have to look for more than one goal.

I suppose that I ought to add a few words about the FA charges which will mean fines for the club and a three match ban for Alex Song. What you will not hear about is the nasty hack into the achilles of Song by Joey Barton just prior to the stamping, Song should have known better than to retaliate in such an unprofessional way and should have his wages docked for two weeks. After the disgraceful tackle on Diaby last season, surely Song should have realised the importance of getting on with the game. Joey Barton acts like a sick psychopath. He deserves no respect, and is a coward. The FA will take no action against Joey Barton, and if Arsene Wenger dare tries to sign this player I shall join the ranks of the disaffected asking Wenger to leave the club. Gervinho’s red card must not be appealed or we will lose him for four matches. Just let’s move on.

Off the field matters

Fabregas has gone back to his spiritual home, and I wish him well. He gave eight good years to this club, and he has left me with many fantastic memories. From his early appearances in the Carling Cup, to the San Siro goal against Inter Milan. But the free kick against Aston Villa where he came off the bench and scored a wonder goal to rescue Arsenal, was representative of his efforts. When we missed Flamini’s efforts, he tirelessy ran back and covered Denilson time after time. I shall always treasure the personally signed Fabregas 15 shirt when I finally met him at Highbury.  I first coined the nom de plume Fabregas_king_in_waiting when I was on Arsenal Word message boards, before starting to write blogs for the Arsenal Forum, before finally joining Arsenalinsider as Fabregas_the King. I salute a true Arsenal legend who I will always respect and admire.

A question? When will Arsene Wenger realise that actually you can negotiate deal firmly behind close doors whilst agreeing publicly that a player’s contract is being discussed in nprinciple with another club. Twitter means that Arsene Wenger attempst at news management have become to sound more and more ridiculous. His comments at the press conference about the possibility of keeping Samir Nasri were risible. But apart from pointing out the silly posturing by a manager who should know better, it is utterly wrong to encourage false hopes as part of some face saving exercise. Arsene Wenger AND Ivan Gazidis have been responsible for letting Nasri get into such a strong position. As for fans buying shirts with Fabregas on the back, you do not deserve a refund if you were that gullible.

I have utterly no sympathy for the buck passing comments of Ivan Gazidis at the recent Arsenal Supporters Trust meeting. Is Mr Gazidis really asking us to believe that he has nothing to do with managing the wage bill at the Club? It seems to me that it is Arsene Wenger who is running the club at the moment. If we have abundant transfer funds then why did we let the buy out clause expire on Mata. We knew that Fabregas was going by the player’s comments today in Spain. The club prevented Cesc from explaining the situation to the fans for over 2 months. So try and hide behind that fig leaf.

For a club of 125 years of heritage and wealth, when doing things the Arsenal way was a thing to be proud of, now it seems that the Arsenal way is one of utter shambles. What springs to mind is justifying how people who are paid an obscene amount of money to get it right can be excused when they get it wrong. But nothing will happen as they are only accountable to the major shareholders. Our transfer priority was to  strengthen the defence. Next to obtain replacements for Fabregas and Nasri. It was not necessary to close one deal before starting another as we had already become resigned to losing the players. This is the curse of the self sustaining model, but will someone point out that we don’t have to have the money in the bank before buying new players. I shudder that the other reason for this dreadful dragging of feet, is a real fear that Arsenal might not qualify for the group stages of the Champions League. if this is a real consideration, then how far have we fallen???

But losing Mata and allowing Nasri the upper hand and risk him leaving on a Bosman is frankly insulting to Arsenal fans. Gazidis is willing to upset fans with a 6.5% increase and having the arrogance to suggest that we should be thankful that we had ticket price freezes, but strangely quiet about who is responsible for this litany of poor management. Where I will agree with Arsene Wenger relates to concentrating on the players who want to play for the club. I am still calling for patience as the transfer window still has two weeks to run, but losing Mata was unforgivable and has shaken my faith in the Arsenal management. We the fans expect better from Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis, there is no point asking for trust as now it has to be earned after the recent transfer debacle.

On a final note if you will excuse the pun, I shall not be singing Nasri’s name this season if he stays, but there is utterly NO EXCUSE for Arsenal fans to abuse our own players with obscene songs, no matter how upset you are. Your actions are no better than the looters who ran amok in London. Please show respect to our players who wear the shirt. I know that I am a hypocrite by not singing his name, but I draw the line at further abuse. Please go to Man City Samir, you deserve each other. So here’s looking forward to Cahill, and two other players arriving at the Arsenal, I would have loved Mata, but poor management meant that we wasted too much time on player deals like Fabregas. Either we have the money or we don’t, and these last few examples have led me to question if the club are being transparent with Arsenal fans.

We must support this team and get them through the Champions league Qualifier. Sing loudly and remember if you attend the game and don’t give them your support, don’t moan if the result is not of your liking. COME ON YOU GUNNERS!

Rocky the King.

Ok I wasn't born and bred a Gooner, but after being in the wilderness, I saw the light and beat a track for Highbury. I have been a season ticket holder for over a decade, and now a life member of the Arsenal Supporter's trust. I hate the Scum and Man U with a passion. Formerly FTK I am co-owner of Arsenalinsider and it's chief blog writer, I can be found having a rant about all things Arsenal, and believe me, you had better listen...

I like your style RTK, reminiscent of a previous contributor but a little more thoughtful and considered, what was his name?  something like FTK?

I’m going to read it all again before commenting,

Keep up the good work RTK,  you may have a future here after all.

My sentiments exactly, re: on field matters. RVP is unreliable because of injuries and the fact he plays too deep. We need movement up front to free the midfield and the defence. Put the opposition in defensive mode and give yourself time to organise.

I also feel Ramsey needs time, too slow in decision making. However, maybe the combination of Wilshire, Song and Frimpong will bear fruits.

Interesting change of name sir, at least now its cast in iron. Rocky Lives.

From FTK to RTK that is really, really cool.

As for Juan Mata I do not believe that transfer was ever on the cards from the player’s point of view.  The reason I write this as I prefer facts.  I checked the Valencia papers and saw that Mata is the vice-captain.  Further more at the dedication to the forthcoming season to the patron saint of the club, the captain and Mata were the two dedicating the offering.  If a player is wishing to leave then Mata’s performance does not fit the bill.  For a player to be in his last year as Mata is supposed to be, then why the steep selling on clause?  It makes the Cesc selling on clause seem cheap?

The mismanagement of the Fabregas transfer I would put down to the personal feelings involved between the parties most closely concerned.  I can understand Mr Wenger, but not Mr Ivan Gazidis.  Personal feeling are all very well but not when it affects the whole running of The Arsenal.  Three players were given free transfers during the summer and were at the club for as long as Cesc.  The personal feeling is kept wholly and solely for the farewell meeting.  Can we expect the same for RVP for example if he leaves.  Mr Gazidis your job is to manage not to baby sit!!!

Ever since the departure of David Dean the Arsenal board have proved to be totally incompetent. Every time the Chairman opens his mouth, other than to stuff in another forkful of Beef Wellington, he shows precisely how out of touch with the clubs supporters he is. The man must still be dizzy from the u-turn he made over the Kroenke fiasco and his famous quote “we don’t need his type here”.

Gazidis is another disaster, appointed presumably at the behest of Kroenke, he has done nothing but appoint legions of back office staff whilst failing to address the poor income levels from sponsorship, failing to get a grip on the player contract situation and failing to managing the PR of the club in any effective way.

The sacking of Lady Nina and the death of Danny Frizman have left gaps on the board which have not been filled. Consequently the club is left to drift rudderless towards the maelstrom of unsettled players, fans discontent and financial instability which will grow significantly worse if Arsenal fail to progress into the next stage of The Champions League. The CL is said to be worth £25 million, that’s a sizeable bite out of the transfer fee received from Barcelona.

The Chairman must as a matter of urgency do all in his power to get Kroenke and Usmanov into talks to reconcile their differences and work together for the future of the club.

Somehow Wenger must be made to realise that a number of his squad are just not good enough, loyalty to his players is all well and good, but it goes beyond loyalty in the cases of injury prone players like Diaby, Rosicky and Gibbs and just not good enough in the cases of Fabiansky, Almunia, Squillaci and others.

We are all aware of the needs of the squad, a centre back, a left back, a defensive midfielder and an out and out striker.

Unless big changes are made in the next two weeks I can’t see Arsenal finishing above sixth in the league and it seems only too likely that another season will go by without a trophy.

That is precisely how I see it JIN if I am honest, rivalry aside that is just not good enough for a club like Arsenal, but this wage structure is to blame mate, it does not matter what profession you are in the very best get paid the most money, so until Spurs sort out their ground capacity, and Arsenal start to spend some bloody money, samba and cahill will be about as good as it gets, whilst the Aguero’s and the like go elsewhere.
Both clubs also have the added problem that even tit’s like Glen Johnson and Gareth Barry are earning 50k a week more than our best paid players, not that you would want them but that type of player won’t step down for peanuts either..impossible task for Wenger in truth.

Arsenal spend a lot on wages. Not in the same league as Chelski and city but not too much less than what manure are spending and I think its more than Liverpool (although that could be outdated now). I can’t remember the exact figures but its not too different.

The problem is who we are paying the money to. for the same kind of money we now have 1 or 2 world class players and about 50 average to good ones many of whom are on loan, many are youngsters earning way too much because we had to give them big wages otherwise they would go elsewhere but they still have no guarentee of succeeding and many older squad players who aren’t good enough.

I think we should operate more like the American franchises who have a wage cap but can break it and pay 3 (or 4?) players vastly more than the rest of the squad. We need to have a few star players who can be attracted with big wages and compensate for this by either having fewer players in the squad.

We currently have 60 professionals at the club including players on loan and surely it makes sense to cut that down to around 45 and spend the wages saved, on a few world class players who have experience and will win us some trophies.

agree, quite why players are so bloody awkward now is beyond me, people in general know when someone is better than you and deserve more, now they all want equality, nobody in the 90′s moaned and wanted equal when Carbone and di canio were on more than everyone at Sheff Wed or when Le tiss was on more at Southampton..why now does Glen Johnson think he is worth as much as Gerrard ? utter nonsense !..good shout superRob !

SR7,  This goes back to Wenger’s sometimes misplaced loyalty to “his” players.  Rosicky played against The Toon but is now suffering from a groin injury.  Diaby out for weeks to come, YET AGAIN!  Get rid of them… free transfers if necessary…get them off the wage list!  we all know the list of players who are not up to standard yet Wenger will only buy where the incoming player is better than those in residence.  If his case it is a matter of not seeing the trees for the deadwood.

In cases like Bendtner, Almunia and Eboue, it appears free transfers might be necessary because the standard of the clubs who might be interested in them have no chance of paying the wages they are used to and in the end the players may choose to stay and play in the reserves for £50000 a week rather than play in turkey and take a £15000 a week pay cut.

These players can be sold to save money but I was talking more about players like Mark Randall. It was clear since he was 18 that he wasn’t going to make it and wasn’t in the same league as the players around him of the same age so why did it take so many years of loan spells and 2nd 3rd and 4th chances to sell him. And there are many more examples of this type among our 60 professionals.

Wenger goes for a different type of player to the above mentioned, he likes a more explosive, quicker turning, more agile player to play the type of football you do it is a must, sadly that type of player is more likely to get hamstring, ligament and strains than a Tony Adams up and at them build..
If you want graceful football you have to accept the injuries I am afraid….

SR7,  A wage cap?  It will never happen!  Can you see the top European clubs agreeing to that?  It would take away their advantage due to their financial muscle.  The press and TV love the high wages, it gives them cheap and easy copy.

Even if a wage cap could be brought in, football throughout the world is so corrupt that the rich owners would drive a horse and cart through the regulations by paying players through blind trusts and offshore accounts.

Nice idea,SR7, but it’s just a pipe dream I’m afraid.

Bigsy, the wage structure is certainly a problem, but that stems from the ownership of the club not from Wenger, I’m sure he would pay more for the best if he could and doing so would atrract the best players.

The stalemate between Kroenke and Usmanov is stifling the club’s development.  Much as I hate the idea of some Middle-Eastern potentate  owning Arsenal that seems to be the only way in which we will compete with Chelsea and Man City.  Man United are a different case as they have an amazing ability to generate cash from their reputation alone.

On another matter entirely, the terrible events of the past week must be presenting Tottenham FC with a bit of a dilemma.  On the one hand they will seem to be deserting a sinking ship by moving to Stratford and further disenfranchising their local support, while if they stay can they build the kind of stadium and surrounding infrastructure to provide the income necessary to support the ambitions of the fans.

In truth it didn’t do Arsenal any harm moving from Woolwich, so why should it hurt Spurs to move ? we need to compete and in order to do that we need to get the 30,000 off a waiting list and through a turnstile, we both share an enormous fan base from manor house to cambridge, so somewhere like Enfield, Cheshunt, would be ideal with M25 access, Tottenham is a dump and we need to move on !

I do agree but still feel that Arsenal and really I am saying Wenger need to figure out how to break teams down, the biggest weakness Arsenal have is the playing deep against them, it exposes their weakness 2 fold,
A- They are unable to get behind and expose you and their ability to over play the game stifles themselves and becomes easy to defend against.
B- By playing deeper against Arsenal you can get at them with longer balls over the top and challenge the obvious weakness of the central pairing, in exactly the way Ipswich did at Portman Road last season,

They do need a plan B, because more and more teams now know that if you deny Arsenal the space in behind they will not hurt you, this means you can play a cagey game relying on set pieces and long balls to exploit their frailties in the air…Carrol, Kaboul, Zigic, Kenwyne Jones, all bagged up in this manner last year and nothing has changed in my opinion this term..personally speaking whatever Wenger does like Redknapp is pointless, Samba, Dann, Jagielka, Cahill are not top class players they are affordable players due to current low wages, anyone any good will be signed by the wealthy sides, sadly that means Nasri and Modric..R.I.P Nth London.

I think this is why AW was so desperate to hang on to CF4 as his ability to spot the killer pass unlocks the rigid barricade deployed so succesfully against us, something like the way Bergkamp, Ljungberg, Henry and Pires used to play.
