Arsenal Overcome Udinese, But Problems Still Remain

Arsene Wenger is a happy man this morning. He was able to watch his young side triumph in Italy last night, after a tough week that’s been riddled with doubt, apprehension and harsh criticism from every possible angle.

Arsenal were able to overcome a tricky Udinese side, and with Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie both getting on the scoresheet, The Gunners were able to progress to the group stages of the Champions League.

The North London side are in Pot 1 for today’s draw, which is scheduled to begin at 5pm this evening.

The Champions League draw will always be a special time for me. Despite the fact that we’ve qualified every year since 1998, the fact we’re in the draw will always give me a great sense of satisfaction. A proud feeling, that I admit will probably never get old.

Over the two ties, I believe we deserved to progress. Although a portion of headlines this morning are suggesting that we were lucky to get through, I’m going to brush off these allegations, as I believe we were the better team overall over both legs.

Udinese showed they were a dangerous side at times, but I feel they lacked a killer instinct when it mattered most.

But you have to feel sorry for them, as like us, they’ve lost vital players this summer in the form of Gökhan Inler and Alexis Sanchez. Like Cesc and Nasri, they were two great players who were pivotal in the teams successes last season.

But unfortunately, in this modern world of football, it’s impossible to hold onto your best players when bigger teams come in with such lucrative offers.

It’s always a shame to see a team have one great season, but then are stripped of all their assets in an instant. Like we’ve seen with FC Porto this summer – a team that didn’t lose a single game last year, but now they’ve lost their manager and players like Radamel Falcao have also departed.

Thank God we’re not in a position like that. Er…. anyway…

Ever since Theo sealed our progression last night in Udine, I have been in a very positive mood. Although, I realise that this smile could be premature. We’ve still got a long way to go until I am fully satisfied for the season ahead. We have a week left, and until we hit September, I’ll remain hopeful that Arsene will be able to invest in decent quality for the squad.

But at least for now, things are starting to look brighter. Like Vermaelen, Szczesny was fantastic again last night. I don’t believe we have problems at the back. Although I would like to see us sign a new centre back, I believe we should prioritize our problems, and start improving our attacking options. At the moment, our side isn’t creating, and scoring enough chances.

I refuse to rule out our problems just yet. Especially with the fact that our side, that is plagued with suspensions and injuries, are set to play at Old Trafford this weekend.

I'm 20 and have been an Arsenal season ticket holder since 2006. My family has had Arsenal links since the 1920's, and the support is still going strong. I am at every home game, and also manage to get to multiple away games, when I can.

I have been writing for various blogs and websites since I was 15, but have now settled down and have become a regular writer for Arsenalinsider. I also run my own Pro Evolution Soccer blog, Only Pro Evolutions.

Arsenal is my passion. Writing is my passion. I was never good enough to play for The Arsenal, so I'll do the next best thing!

It doesn’t say much for our left backs when Sagna has to cross over from right back even though Traore was fit.  Unless Wenger buys a left back I can see Sagna becoming a fixture in that position, Jenkinson, so far, has done alright.

What worries me is who plays in place of the suspended Song and Frimpong on Sunday.

Time to get the cheque book out Mr. Wenger.

If Arsene recruits well in the remainder of the transfer window then some of last seasons problems will be eradicated. The defence needs strengthening and some creativity is needed to replace cesc and samir as jack cant do it by himself. If the recruitment goes well it could still be a good season despite the poor start. Dont expect too much on sunday at old trafford either.

We need players with passion for the club. Playes like winterburn, dixon, adams etc had so much passion for ARSENAL. Yesterday was a very decent effort.

I believe Traore must be axed for the way he walked into the pitch. No passion, no commitment……….he looked like he was pushed onto the field.

Mate, we’ve got plenty of those nowadays. Wilshere, Ramsey, Jenkins, Scezney, these guys are all very passionate about this club.

i believe that Ramsey is our weak link.i was watching his and he seems to slow the game down everytime he gets the ball.he tries to take it easy when he is supposed to work his socks off.He is a good player but he is not ready to take us forward.i would try Arshavin in that position.just my opinion.

Agreed mate, I think ramsey hasn’t had the best start to the season. We really need wilshere back fit. He is pivotal to our success. Frimpong looks like he is going to be a good holding midfielder he just needs to not rush into too many challenges a jocky players more often. Also his distribution is a bit off with some misplaces passes. But he is athletic has a high work rate good positioning. Looks promising. Songs been our best midfield player so far. Lost count of the crucial challenges he made – he also gets forward too. I think playing arshavin central would be a great idea. We desperately need a player who can link up in the middle and make runs into the box.

There’s a rather big chance Arsenal wouldn’t have won either of the games against Udinese if the Italians managed to hold on to their stars instead of selling them. That’s probably true. But they had to sell them, because their budget depends on sales. And that’s likely true, too.
Arsenal are missing a swift creative midfielder, who could get a good hold on the midfield and create the game without just spilling the ball to this side or that, like Ramsey tended to do last night. That’s probably true. But the ramsey we currently see is still several steps behind the Ramsey we know from last season. I don’t think he is enough, I actually think Wenger & the board and anyone else that matters should seriously consider other options. I like some of the rumours that are circulating right now, with the likes of Marvin Martin being linked to a move to Emirates. It’s nice, becuase I don’t think Arsenal need a Kaka, a player who would control the game from day one, but still need to adapt to the English game. They need an option, someone on whom they could rely in trouble. Surprisingly, yesterday it was Rosicky who gave the necessary impetus to the London side. I liked that, because he once counted among the 10 best creative midfielders in the world. I think it’s high time he showed more of the things which made him famous. Other players raise both eyebrows and questions, like Chamakh and Squillaci, normally reliable, if not very complicated, players, who nevertheless appear patently unable to fit in with the Arsenal side. If they can’t, Arsenal need players who would like to warm the bench for a while, just until RVP or Vermaelen get an injury. I don’t know if Wenger can really find such players, but if he can, Arsenal will have one of the evenest sides around. If that can’t win them the EPL or the CL, it can still lead to a lot of good.

Traore made a slow entry to eat up a few seconds – we criticise them for being naive about such things usually – they finished the game pretty professionally last night, and didn’t let Udinese back in after the second goal. Well done. Still need a specialist left back though, and why we didn’t buy Enrique heaven knows. Plus a centre back one or two versatile striker/cretaive midfielders and an experienced box to box man who can shoot and tackle. Even with the blossoming of Frimpong, still need to strengthen the squad – lot of matches ahead!

I thought Arsenal done well last night considering the pressure on them, ok a better team and you would have to ask if they would have finished Arsenal off in the first 30 minutes, I thought an average side like Udinese hitting the woodwork and bombarding the goal was a bit poor to be honest but well done..

JIN – I have to say they way I see things right now and I did put this on another posting, my Nth London side would be ..

    Sczezny

    Sagna
    Vermaelen
    Dawson
    Ekotto

    Bale
    Modric
    Wilshire
    Walcott

    VDV
    RVP

Walcott and Lennon was a close call as I think they are both crap but Theo does work harder and scores more so gets the edge, that is an honest selection and it has to cause concern as a gooner, because 6 years ago we wouldn’t have had any players anywhere near a starting 11 ..you are right you need a left back and fast !

Have been watching the Arsenal selling of key player antics from a distance. I follow UK football from Colorado USA. Seeing what is being said by writers and critics in the UK I unfortunately see a similar pattern unwinding for Arsenal this season as to what happened to another sports team owned by Stan Kroenke, the Colorado Avalanche ice hockey team. The Avs in late 1990 early 2000 were one of the top teams which went on to win 2 Stanley Cups, they had top players and coaches, then a slow meltdown took place. It was not immediately noticeable but bit by bit it was broken down, key players sold no new key replacements, they slipped down the logs, changed coaches and finally settled into a routine of being aimless and a washed up team at the bottom of the logs. During this downward trend owners and management stayed silent, fans stilled paid top dollar to see a once noted team, but who wants to see some players putting their hearts into the game and owner is raking in some money left on the table but the fans. Kroenke then went onto giving his son Josh the ownership of the Avs, and went onto other ventures such as controlling Arsenal, and getting into an American football team. I am sad to say that Kroenke has no interest in UK football, he is there for the money and will raid the fans coffers till Arsenal is at bottom of league fighting for survival, and the fans have become dis-content and wandering what happened when their once famous club was invaded by a greedy rich American corporate big knob. Hope this does not happen for the sake of UK football and fans over time, but to me I cannot see things differently. If I am proved wrong I will take back my words.
