Now Van Persie must sign new deal at Arsenal

Adequate is the word that I would use to describe Arsenals transfer window. It could have been better but then again it could also have been worse. Watching the post match interview with Wenger after our dismal Sunday last weekend left me feeling angry, deflated and pessimistic about our future.

Wenger seemed in denial as usual, espousing his rhetoric of ‘special circumstances’. Van Persie saw through it as did most of us Gooners, pointing out that Man U were also missing players. As Robin was suggesting football is all about squads, not just first teams and ours was not even close to being able to compete with Man United’s.

In truth the Man U team that trounced us so comprehensively was almost unrecognisable from the team that started the Champions League Final last May. Only Rooney and Evra remained in the starting line-up, dramatically highlighting the difference between the two squads. Every cloud has its silver lining though. It finally appeared last night as the emphatic nature of defeat forced Wenger and the board to spend some of the infamously abundant silver lining their pockets.

At last, if not all a little bit too late. Wenger’s interview about ‘special circumstances’ and the imminent signing of Park though had suggested it might have been different. In reality these signings should have been made months ago and been given time to settle in. Yet they were merely just a reaction to a crisis situation, a situation that should never have been allowed to develop in the first place.

According to Wenger the reason we did not buy players before was because it was hard to find players of Arsenal quality. Yet he somehow managed to find 5 in two days, and two of them had been right underneath his nose for 6 years. Obviously Wenger has panicked – just as he said he would never do – and bought players for the sake of it. Arteta and Benayoun, both undoubtedly good players, are not even close to the quality of Fabregas and Nasri. Nevertheless they are better than nothing and although I am not ecstatic I am moderately appeased.

Earlier in the summer Wenger admitted to the world that we would no longer be a big club after selling Nasri and Fabregas. That is not completely true. Reality demands that sometimes big clubs must sell big players, (e.g. Ronaldo from Man U to Madrid), however big clubs always replace big players. Arsenal have failed to do that this summer.

It has been an awkward summer for Arsenal and I am glad the tedious transfer sagas are over (until the inevitable Van Persie saga starts next year). However I cannot escape fact that despite our squad being much stronger than it was last week it is still undoubtedly weaker than the one that finished fourth last season. The truth is that we have a real fight to get fourth this year and whereas last week I was despondent about the challenge, now I am now optimistic again.

what i believe , wenger  will sign 1 big name  in January even  it would be cup tie , you know Wenger has  a record of  signing in January, Arshavin came in January, Adebayo  too , and he  do that  to avoid Biding competition ,  HAZARD, MARIO GOTZE, or M’VILLA  one of  them will Land at  the Emirates in  January.

have to disagree mate- you cant replace Cesc easily, he is after all, probably the most complete playmaker in the world. AW did bid HUGE on Mario Goetz, a readymade replacement and when he wasnt available, tried for Gourcuff, which would have been a marquee signing. They werent available so he bought Arteta, the player in the epl most similar to Cesc. Nope, not as good perhaps but bloody good nonetheless. People are whingeing that he hasnt spent all the cash- I would imagine that would be a remiss thing to do when he still has to negotiate better contracts for a few players and may well have another pop at M’villa/Hazard/Gourcuff/Goetz in Jan or next summer. Why blow your wad completely if you havent got what you want- in my eyes very sensible.

Nasri, for all the hype, had a good 3 months last year but I do think he is a great player, just I think Gervinho may prove to be even better. Look at the realities- Nasri took 2 years to really blossom. Gervinho has hit the ground running pretty much and looks a very talented young man.

I for one will get behind the team and am hopeful that this new injection of older, experienced leaders will gel well and give the young starlets the necessary example to make them all kick on. I cant believe just how many negative comments I have read in the last 24. Wenger cant win, he is damned if he doesnt spend and damned if he does. Apparently, its panic buying. I would suggest that ALL of the players bought were scouted at length (as always with AW) and  that ALL were on his list. How otherwise could he have moved so quickly.

For me, I am looking forward to seeing Jack Wilshere playing with Arteta, Metesacker looming large next to Vermahlen and Santos ripping past defenders

    Come on the GOONERS!!

Thanks for your positive and (in my opinion) realistic comment. Anybody who knows me, knows how critical I can be. Still I don’t understand the wave of criticism now. Wenger did the best possible now. He never bought players for huge amounts. Not even when we were more successful. I’m also sure he’s ready to buy M’villa/Hazard/Gourcuff/Goetz. Why did you guys think Yossi’s got a 1 year loan deal only? I think to moan now is stupid. Let’s get behind the team and hope for the best.

Regarding Nasri, he was very normal before last season, and only started to blossom this season, he needs more time to prove to be a great player. He is not irreplaceable, with Gervinho, Benayoun, Park, i don’t have much worry about his replacement.
Why no one mentioned Arshavin ? He is a great player, and possesses the skill and speed, and what he lacks is consistencies. When you look at last year’s squad, besides Nasri, Arshavin is the only one with flair and speed, and good at 1 on 1, he can dribble pass opponents and create killer pass and goal threat.  AW should play him more often.

Again you show absolutely no idea of how the transfer market or business works.

It is very difficult to do business early when you are competing with clubs like City and Chelsea with bottomless pockets.      A fee was agreed for Mata,  although his wage demands were well beyond Arsenals wages sructure.   Hence a move to Chelsea.

Bolton,  held out for 15 million for Cahill  and as a result he will move for free in a year.

We also didn’t have garanted Champions League football until a week before, again another reason players will hold off.

It is very easy to spend someone elses money, millions of it, and just because the owners have money doesn’t mean they want to spend 25 million on Adeybor for example, who City have let rot, on 200K a week…. for a business, it’s not realistic.   The transfer market is a gamble,  look at Reyes, Forlan, Veron, Shevchenko,  all costing huge salaries and transfer fees, that was money written off.

Until FIFA and UEFA actually apply and implement some financial fair play regulations this is the Reality.   Complaining and whinging isn’t going to change the situation and it certainly doesn’t help the team.

KROENKE SEE’S AFC AS A BUSINESS, TO WHICH HE CAN BLEED OUT THE PROFITS AN THEN SELL ON!!! GAZIDAS WAS RECOMMENDED BY KROENKE, GAZIDAS HAS BEEN SETTING ARSENE’S TRANSFER BUDGETS, GAZIDAS HAS LET PLAYERS SLIP THROUGH AFC FINGERS WITH HIS INSISTENCE ON A WAGE STRUCTURE THAN MIRRORS FULHAMS, GAZIDAS TALKS TO AGENTS AND ALMOST PURPOSELY DISCOURAGES ANY PROGRESS FOR A TRANSFER. ARSENE IS UNAWARE OF WHAT IS GOING ON BEHIND HIS BACK. THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE CLUB OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS HAS NOT BEEN GOOD, THE FANS NEED TO CHALLENGE THE BOARD FOR ANSWERS, AST ARE NOT ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS.

I don’t know if you are really an employee or not. I (for now) feel positive (see below), but I agree with you that Kroenke and Gazidis are animals. I hate them and nothing can change it. Piss off you fucking businessmen. They think the heat is off. I hope that’s not the case. We should get united.

This post is really misguided. Van Persie is contracted until 2014 and there is no way he could leave next summer for below his market price of around £23 million. Who would want to buy a player of his injury record anyway? Don’t you wonder why no one bids for him?

The pessimist will never stop.So Wenger just went to the transfer market and picked the 5s on the last day wise up bro.,If Nasri had stayed back, he would have signed for Arsenal at the end of the season,b/c the inevitable would have occurred. RVP will surely learn from the mistake of others. The problem is not Wenger but the traitors Ashley Cole,Xleb,Flamini,Reyers,Now,Nasri,Clichy And Bertner.

    Hi

I think it is important to respond to sensible comments that provoke a good debate.

The editor changed the title of the article. It was not supposed to be about Van Persie signing a new contract at all (that was based on a one line joke near the end of the article). It was supposed to be a comment on our dealings in the transfer window.

I am happy that we signed players (Mertesacker and Santos especially), good players, and I see the merits of all those transfers. However what I was trying to point out was that our squad might be deeper but lacks a little bit of quality when compared with last years squad.

I’m sure Arsene has scouted those players but you cannot deny that those were not his first choice targets. Arsene has always said he would never buy just for the sake of buying – so why has he done so now?  (why has he not done this in the past, we might have won the league one of these past 6 years if he had)

I have always believed that we had a great chance of winning the league every season except this one.

What do you think about our transfer dealings overall?
Where do you think we will finish this season?

Well Rishi this is your younger brother Will I would like to take this time to agree with the points you’ve given but also Nasri would of stayed but Wenger bout 5 new players and Nasri thought that this would make him no longer have a postion as a starting player at Arsenal.
