RTK Blog: Another Arsenal own goal

The news that the annual shareholder Q&A has been postponed is a disastrous PR move by the club, and just confirms to me that those who are running the club have double standards. Last time I looked, the annual Q&A was a vehicle which prevented the AGM from descending into farce with shareholder’s questions from the floor heaping embarrassment upon the Board members present. If Ivan Gazidis and Arsene Wenger think that they will have found a way to prevent more negative headlines in the media, and enable confidence to begin to grow, then they have seriously miscalculated. But given their performance in the Transfer market this summer why am I surprised. Errors like london buses have a habit of all arriving at the same time. There are ways to breed confidence in an organisation or public company, and this isn’t one of them.

It is arrogant in the extreme to treat shareholders like this, and now the shareholders themselves will understand how the grass root fans feel. I would humbly extend words of warning to Arsenal Football Club. Think very carefully before alienating your own bedrock support. You are currently losing the battle for hearts and minds of longstanding loyal supporters. It is now time to face your critics and agree that you have got it wrong. It is time to compromise and embrace change. Changing one’s stance is a political decision. Do not fall into the trap, because  conviction can sometimes be a weakness rather than a strength, if it leads to stubborness and blinkered awareness in the face of reality. “Victory through Harmony” is our motto, and Harmony at the moment will only arrive through pragmatic changes of policy.

Surely it should be clear by now to the Arsenal Football Club Communications department, that every move that is made to try and manipulate the social media, fanzine bloggers and the mainstream media news will result in the very opposite of what was intended. They need to understand that genuine grievances will turn to a loss of respect and support if they are treated in this manner. Even the reputation of Arsene Wenger, who I have supported through grim times of negative criticism will suffer a mortal blow. I have heard many accuse him of  many things. Sophistry, Hyperbole and even having taken leave of his senses, but I for one would never have considered Arsene Wenger capable of cowardice, so it must have been upon the advice of others. Now is the time to lead by good pragmatic judgement and real effective change. People earn more respect by admitting their mistakes and putting in place remedies to prevent reoccurrence, rather than obstinately retreating into their fortresses and pulling up the drawbridge.

As for suggestion of relegation? Now that is lala land talk, and reading Tony Woodcock’s interview, he never said that Arsenal will be relegated or come close. He merely warned that football is a funny game and the unexpected sometimes happens. Arsenal being being rooted in the lower third of the PL table being one of them if they fail to correct their defensive weaknesses.  Arsene’s buys of Oxo and Gervinho shows that he can provide attacking Wengerball if the players are determined and willing, and with 33 games to go we can easily still turn this around, and as I have said. I believe that Arsene Wenger is the right man to do it, subject to criteria discussed in an earlier blog. So this is another own goal by Arsenal, but this time not on the field of play. Finally, if this is the new “Arsenal Way” in action then expect more attempts to stage manage the media when Stan Kroenke at last breaks his silence, prior to the AGM to a select group of fans. His advisors should note however the lessons of history, which shows us that manipulated sanitised propaganda in a crisis always comes from a totalitarian regime during the final months of it’s rule…

Ok I wasn't born and bred a Gooner, but after being in the wilderness, I saw the light and beat a track for Highbury. I have been a season ticket holder for over a decade, and now a life member of the Arsenal Supporter's trust. I hate the Scum and Man U with a passion. Formerly FTK I am co-owner of Arsenalinsider and it's chief blog writer, I can be found having a rant about all things Arsenal, and believe me, you had better listen...

you have no fucking idea what you are talking about, keep your pretend football manager gig going…leave the PR analysis to someone who has some idea. with soldiers like you in an army, a battle would be lost at first set back. have some fucking courage and loyalty, rather than having your backside be used as a pincushion by people who are laughing behind your back. for fuck sake, you people are so easily led — get some bloody awareness. if you are an arsenal supporter, use your goddamm keyboard to organize and mount some counter measure on behalf of the club…and some of you sound so fucking self-assured in spouting cluelessly undermining drivel — a demonstration of the best and worst of the power of modern telecommunications.  most of you have been worst than bloody useless to this point…get your head out the clouds and turn your shit around

I dont think arsene makes decisions about what goes on at AGMs. I think this is purely a board decision. Last I checked Arsene isnt a board member at AFC. yes he may have influence over what the board does, but I dont think it is entirely accurate to include his name without any solid evidence confirming his link to the decision. To call Arsene Wenger a coward based on your opinion is a good example of why some people dismiss blogs like yours, ie because you write factually inaccurate information and such information does not deserve the respect you are seeking.

I agree that it doesnt feel right to not have a Q&A session from a FAN’s point of view, however from a SHAREHOLDER’s point of view, profits remain the top item on the agenda and yes football results bear a very significant influence on profits. An unsuccessful football club will not bring results in, meaning fewer gate receipts and also will not attract players wanting to play for the club on the cheap (ie you end up a Man City situation whereby you have to pay ridiculous wages to attract players). All these factors  will be on shareholders minds. Profits and results on the pitch are linked very closely. I am sure the major Arsenal shareholders are unhappy about the results on the pitch and want something done about it asap as this means the value of their shares falls if the club does badly.

      Please read my blog again,

I said the following : I have heard many accuse him of  many things. Sophistry, Hyperbole and even having taken leave of his senses, but I for one would never have considered Arsene Wenger capable of cowardice, so it must have been upon the advice of others.

I allege that avoidance of a very negative Q&A equates to cowardice, but not of his intention…

In the real world where I live and where managers and directors of companies who underperform for 6 years would have long been fired long ago, postponing this type of shareholder meeting is a sure sign of crisis in the company that can cause a sell off of stock.

If course this is arsenal, there are many lemmings like my NY friend below who are happy to follow Wenger and Gazidis over a cliff in the name of loyalty because they can’t think for themselves and see the facts in front of them.

We are continuing a run of relegation form and sit 17th. Enough.

And for those who keep lamely asking who could replace Wenger and seem
not to know how to use Google, Gasperini has been out of a job for 7 months and we could have had him. Now it’s too late and he is at Inter. This will be Inters fourth manager in what, 2 or so years? Shocking! Yet they won two cups in 2011 finished second in Serie A and qualified for CL.

So tell me — why must we keep the same tired, failed manager for 16 years?

“underperform for 6 years”?…a lot has happened over the last 6 years at Arsenal, “underperforming” (relative to economic resources) is certainly not one of them.  Arsenal has made a number of apparently frustrating decisions of the last few years (like not buying a proper defender in the last January’s transfer window, and turn around this summer and were willing to risk 20M pounds walking out the door with Nasri) and they continue to make some puzzling decisions.  But what has happened over the last few years at Arsenal has been overwhelmingly more good than bad  - and by some distance.  If Arsenal has shot themselves in the foot, it’s not at the cost of not realizing a normal return on investment (they have done that and more).  If they have shot themselves in the foot, it is at the cost of not realizing their class.
So… over these last “failed…16 years” there has been wobbles but there have also been great glory. [and while i'm at it, and jumping several steps] don’t be turned (if you are in that camp) by talk that the club’s off-the-field accomplishments are also beside the point.

I hear your pain, but three wins in a row in this league can mean going from 17th to sixth, so I don’t see Arsenal getting relegated anytime this century.
What you may be right about is the feeling that Arsene Wenger has tenure of office, if we fail to make the top four this season, we should not reward failure and Arsene should resign.

rocky_the_king, i am surely taking some of frustration out on you, but i do believe that some of our blogs are unintentionally adding to the problem, given the climate relative to Arsenal. I also believe that if Arsenal were to fall out of the top-4, Arsene should step down…for the sake of managing the club’s culture (of success) — but that he should leave with all the honors due to him for he has contributed a lot.

We agree, I continue to believe that we owe Arsene Wenger a debt of gratitude for bringing back success to the club after 11yrs. It was 17 yrs before that famous 1971 victory, so our current generation of Gooners are spoilt.
We have punched above our weight DUE to Arsene Wenger. let no-one forget that.
But equally that does not mean we cannot challenge him when him repeatedly makes errors.
he asks to be judged at the end of the season, we did, he cannot complain and hide when that judgement is exceeedingly negative, because he failed to do his job and strengthen the defence…
          No worries dude! :-)
We are all proud Gooners together!

I’m surprised that with the balance book legislation to take effect that Manciteh can so ignore the economics of the sport and continue to spend silly money… and will apparantly get away with it!  I believed clubs would be more balanced.  I am completely mistaken and in shock at how Arsenal’s market strategy is being so left in the dust by the big spenders.

Mainly Arsene clinging to the belief in this HUGE FINANCIAL CRISIS which is going to hit football.
He is sadly mistaken to confuse the demise of Global Stock markets and the EURO with the kind of funding by Oil rich Sheiks who don’t need western banks.
Most of them are getting richer by betting against the Euro.
The European banks are pouring Billions into the pockets of Speculators who are either good at the futures market or who are heavily short selling

My first thought was – would the real Rocky approve or is he turning in his grave?

First of all, this will be the first AGM with a SOLE OWNER in charge!

Note Mr Gazidis comment recently about Silent Stan speaking, I assume this will be at the AGM?

Kroenke is only owner by majority shareholding, which is a little different to someone who owns 100% of the business.
That having been said, I think that he will be made to feel very uncomfortable and I very much doubt if he will utter a single word, if he does, I think that it will be a prepared statement without questioning.
I cannot see the other shareholders holding back, can you?

Well firstly stop all the waffle and cut to the chase…This little porkie pie clearly needs a few more days to seal and make air tight before being thrown to the public.
Secondly those of you who persist in spouting nonsense about Man City and the so called fair platform with regards to money and financing of clubs..please take a sensible pill or try and have a devious mind for a minute or two, these are people who are at the top of the worlds Oil chain, not some wally who scoops up camel turds for a living and converts them into fuel…do you not think they have every solicitor and con trick in the book to get around it, we already have the oil rich Man City getting billions for a sponsorship deal on their stadium that goes on their balance sheets, next week 380,000 barrels of crude oil will no doubt be passed to the man who sponsored them..waste of time trying to play by fair means in this game now, Roman is funding a football club whilst the people he starved to become a billionaire search for a pair of shoes in the blizzards…get real !

Things don’t look too good at my club.  ‘Silent Stan’, the board and Mr Wenger have made a right cock up of things.  In the words of Michael Stipe I’d just like to sign off with this thought for Arsen:

(also @Bigsyisback) There is also the caution of “be careful what you wish for”.  Here is where i stand on wenger: a lack of cutting edge has manifested itself (i’ll avoid going into details as much of the evidence is being shouted from the roof top at the moment).  While it is possible that some of what we are seeing might be the result other causes (e.g. finances, upper management/general club strategy, the contract negotiation team, etc.), some of the current difficulty lands squarely in wenger’s lap: i think the club needs to take a hard look at him as a coach – and i do mean a hard look. Pulling wenger out as coach will cause other dominoes to move, e.g. players who are here because of him, players who are possibly considering coming because of him, prestige that he lends to the club, etc.  What the club, however, can not tamper with is it’s sustainable model – i think the industry is littered with enough examples of the consequences ” living beyond your means” that i don’t have to dive down on this.

There is of course the minor possibility that some oil-rich character might swoop in somehow buyout the club.  I would consider that an unfortunate development, and there are all types of pros and cons that folks can come up with on that one – at the end of the day Arsenal is a football club NOT some type of cause. It may be a case of “if you can not beat them join them” – meaning, in other words, one can not sensibly ignore reality and simply wish the world were different…but that’s a discussion for another day. Nonetheless, however, since such a white knight is a minor possibility, the club has to push forward with strengthening its current business model.  As they say in planning, “hope for the best, but plan for the worst” (i.e. if you were in the camp that consider a sugar daddy a “better” outcome).

If you then believe, as i do, that strengthening the current model is the way forward, the manner in which Arsene Wenger transitions for the coaching position can / is going to be of massive importance: the better scenario would be one where there’s orderly transition and he leaves from a position of strength; the scenario in which he is hounded out the club would be very bad, in my opinion.

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”  There are those in England who, for whatever reasons, seem to actively welcome the possibility of  mr. wenger’s failure this season.   Arsenal supporters have to be careful about who consider them friends, and act accordingly in their support of the club – (constructive) criticism can be a very valuable form of support.

Perfectly put but sadly 99.9% of fans do think this way or even care, they only worry about their tea not being milky, their meat pie being hot and Arsenal winning more than they lose and giving them a reason to glow on the way back to the pub.
How the club get to those few simple pleasures in life they care not.
