Wenger eyes £8m move for Biglia to Arsenal

Arsene Wenger is reportedly keen on signing £8million Anderlecht midfielder Lucas Biglia in the January transfer window.

There are claims this morning that the 25-year-old Argentinean has been on Arsenal’s radar since the summer. Biglia left Independiente for Europe in 2006 and he is under contract at Anderlecht until 2015. The hardman has been capped six times by his country and won his second title with Anderlecht last season.

The stories are based on him telling Argentinean news agency Telam: “I know that there are movements but they are just usual events to me.”

Not sure that his hard evidence he is coming to the Ems!

The Mirror carries an interview with AW in which he we have a better chance of winning silverware this season than they did in the last campaign.

He has claimed the signings of Per Mertesacker, Mikel Arteta, Yossi Benayoun, Ju Young Park and Andre Santos in August have increased his squad’s chances of ending a trophy drought that stretches back to 2005.

He said: “Overall, we have more experience and this could be important if we are in a strong position should we have interesting challenges in March or April. That could have a big part to play.

“We got criticised a lot last season for not getting over the line, but I believe that we were so close, so, so close that it was unbelievable to accept. But we have added more experience.

“It was all change in the summer and some of that was for unwanted reasons,” he admitted. We lost some players that we didn’t want to lose, also we had some players that hadn’t played for a while, so we thought it was important to renew the whole squad, and that’s what we did.

“It was a challenge, and believe me it demanded massive work – day and night. But, overall, I’m confident. I believe there was some anxiety around the club and the team, but I always felt in our situation that a lot would happen in the last 48 hours, because I’ve experienced that before – and that’s what did happen.

“But basically I’m very happy with the signings we made and my challenge now is to prove that I made the right decisions. I have great belief in the players I bought in and I am convinced they will prove me right.”

Meanwhile, Andrey Arshavin admits he has failed to live up to expectations this season.  In the Sun, Arshavin concedes Gunners fans have every right to be critical of his recent performances. He said: “They should expect more from me, of course. They should expect some more tricks, goals and unbelievable passes.

“To be honest I am still expecting more from me as well but believe me, I do everything I can do. I just have to give everything I can at the moment, just on the pitch. I want to score more goals and bring my team to the title.”
