Robin Van Persie is leaving Arsenal. No, wait – he is staying. No, no, he is definitely leaving. Sorry, staying. That’s how confused you’ll be if you peruse this morning’s papers for news pertaining to the Gunners; skipper RVP after his two.
The Daily Star AW says RVP is refusing to discuss a new contract – despite the player insisting he is committed to the club. The paper says we want their skipper to agree a new deal. He is currently tied to the club for just this season and next.
“He knows we are ready to talk about it,” said AW. “The most important thing is what you do today and how much you are committed for the cause as long as you are at the club.
“The ideal situation is that he extends his length of his contract, but if he does not we have to respect that. What is important is that he plays like he plays. We are here to see special football players and he is a special player.”
The Mail, however, says RVP has “laughed off” claims he wants to leave the club. The paper reports him saying: “There have been many stories in the media lately. I am committed to Arsenal. That’s how it is.”
It claims RVP has been annoyed at a recent report that claimed he had put his house up for sale to help him secure his exit from Arsenal. “I moved house last year. I see stories which make me laugh, but I can see how frustrating it is from the fans’ point of view.”
Of the 2-1 win at the Ems, the Sun quotes AW has saying we have turned the corner. He said: “We have now won five games on the trot at home, so I believe that once you can put two, three more games together.
“You feel the attitude and the spirit of the team is great. Even at half-time, we had a good response. The motivation and quality are there, so we should slowly get there.”
