Wenger eyes German aces Reus and Grosskreutz

Inter Milan poised to swoop for Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie. Or how about Borussia Dortmund midfielder Kevin Grosskreutz admitting he is interested in a move to Gunners?

These are two of the offerings within the nation’s sports pages this morning in a week that will drag out the merest rumour of a yarn to fill the papers in the absense of domestic football and the stories to meet our thirst for knowledge.

Morning and welcome to the backpage round-up. The RVP angle? Can’t be arsed to comment as this – speculation will continue until the skipper puts pen to paper on a new deal. A friend of this site says that they know his agent and that he will definitely sign an extension to his current Emirates deal. Time will tell. Hope so though ‘cos he’s rather good at scoring goal is he not?

As for Grosskreutz (we’d rather have your mate, Mario, pal), he told the Mail: “If I do ever leave Dortmund, I would like to go to the Premier League in England, and my favourite club there is Arsenal.”  Until City offer him a billion pound an hour on a 30-year deal.

Still in the Germany, and another transfer tale sees Borussia Monchengladbach manager claiming that AW has inquired about his star player Marco Reus. Now if I’d been doing my job properly instead of munching on tea and toast, I’d have led of on this story as it seems it has some legs.

The boss in question is Lucien Favre and he is quoted thus: “Yes, Jens Lehmann gave him a tip to watch Marco. Then Arsene called me. I know Arsene very well and told him the truth: Marco is a very, very interesting player. But I am coach of Borussia and want to keep him.”

So there you have it. I am off to read the 50th anniversday edition of Private Eye while listening to Half Man Half Biscuit’s ‘Dead Men Don’t Need Season Tickets’ on a loop.

His agent is Darren Dein. On that fact alone, it wouldn’t surprise me if he left in the summer.

Another rumour states Arshavin threatening to quit if he’s continually “glued to the bench”…..pass the Evo stik someone.

If i’m honest, even with the lack of effort defensively, he is still better than walcott and would soon find his form if he was given more opportunity. Class is permanent.

Walcott is in the team on merit. Arshavin has had loads of chances and hasn’t done it. Has even said himself he has been average.

Agree entirely, form dips and confidence returns providing the manager handles his staffs needs and desires correctly, Arshavin did not become a bad player over night, he is a man being played out of position and he still has a better touch and finish than Theo Walcott…it is totally wrong and naive to condemn a man when he is being asked to do the wrong job in my opinion…he signed a forward thinking central goalscorer who had an uncanny nack of producing goals from nowhere without thought just instinct and Wenger has tried turning him into some kind of Remi Moses, absolute Bollocks in my view, look atn his finish at home to Barcelona ! is that a man who should be backtracking and heading balls off his own goal line ?

Can’t agree with that. He tries the spectacular and to beat 4 or 5 men, great when it comes off but more often than not it doesn’t, regardless of what is asked he doesn’t do the basics , look at the Catalan red and blue c*nts , they set the standard, press harrass defend all over the pitch for the 90+ not now and again, ALL outfield players. He’s proved he can’t hack it, whatever the reason is immaterial,  I’d take Walcott over him all day.

          To answer your question…yes!

Berg10 I know you have more football knowledge than that, surely you do not expect a man to play out of position and be natural at it ?  Barcelona press all over the pitch because they have round pegs in round holes, they do not have a single player being asked to do a job he is not developed to do, now if he played Villa at left side and asked him to back track the opposing wing back are you honestly suggesting his game would not be affected and he would not look lost ? you say outfield players like they are all equal and have no strengths and weaknesses, so Jack Wilshire should be able to play centre half no problem at all then without his game suffering ? ..as long as he presses, harrasses and works hard..of course it makes a difference so it is not immaterial at all…Footballers are not robots they are selected for their position and developed, occasionally you might get a young lad who is a centre forward and the club see him developing into a left back like ashley cole was, but let’s not forget when Wenger signed Arshavin he was playing as second striker having already failed at being a midfielder with Zenit, he was scoring freely and making huge noises, Arsene signed a goalscorer and played him where he had already failed in Russia…bad management !  not going to argue over it I know I’m right ..Jimmy Greaves would have been a shit right back and Bill Nick wouldn’t have played him there !..and unless I am right why did the entire football world fancy their chances when Mascherano dropped in to cover for puyol when he was injured last year ? surely he should have been able to fit in like any other outfield player ?

Woa woa woa bigsy boy. I’m certainly not stating I expect a dwarf type low centre of gravity player to fill in for a centre half at all, that isn’t the argument. Van Persie tracks back often and reclaims the ball that was lost up the field, so does Walcott, Jack, Song, Rosicky…..their not bleedin Centre halfs are they? Nor are they expected to fill in that position or full back, this guy rarely makes a tackle, he chases, misses, puts hands on hips and shakes his head. Brilliant!

Comparing Jimmy Greaves (great player) and his era are incomparable, different set ups and most certainly different laws and interpretations exist now, football has evolved, wasn’t it you that said recently that Wenger hasn’t moved on? well that’s very recent compared with Greavsey’s time.

I don’t know why AW bought AA to play him out of his favoured position, I imagine it was discussed with the player but irrespective of that if the hole is round and the peg square get rid. That was my point.

I have noticed those traits in his game Berg10 I do agree, I also see it in Pavyluchenko too, so I do understand where you are coming from, I guess it is back to this age old argument about professionalism, some will dig in others won’t but I just feel playing the lad where he is meant to be would be a start..to me he looks like he has had enough, the trouble is he is exactly the type to go to Liverpool and score enough goals playing centrally with suarez to make them a force..managers are their own worst enemies at times..a stupid signing with hindsight as clearly playing him where he made an impression was never on the agenda..

Sorry, can’t garee that he is better than Walcott. He may or may not have more class or talent but he doesn’t show it enough. Theo (on a good day) gets in some good crosses/assists, scores a few belters and covers jenks.

      Rubbish!

In a very long interview mainly regarding Russia and the Russian footballing scene.  In the piece regarding Mr Wenger, this was about the differences between certain trainers and Mr Wenger.  There was a question about the Russian playing for the team from Tottenham Marshes and if AA would be happy sitting on the bench!  AA said he would have to think about that when it happened.

There were questions about Birmingham – how could The Arsenal be so stupid as to lose to a relegated team.

There were questions about the departures and arrivals in the summer.  AA asked Nasri to stay, but money counts.

Played out of position? How long are we going to milk that excuse? He’s played over 100 games for Arsenal in more of less the same position – is he still out of position? At what point do you do the same thing over 100 times before you can’t use the excuse that you aren’t used to it? I think you need to stop fooling yourselves – Arshavin just isn’t cut out for the EPL or Arsenal – is it any wonder his buddy Pavyluchenko can’t get a proper run in for Spuds either? The game is too fast for them and they lack the endurance to put out an effort for 90 minutes. Can’t defend, runs into a wall of defenders and loses the ball, forgot how to shoot, some days he looks like he’s forgotten how to pass. This isn’t the league or team for Arshavin – he needs a team where he isn’t asked to run backwards or one where the game isn’t fast and hard – he needs to look to Italy or Spain for a slower, more technical game. He can’t go to Barca because he would actually have to defend and track back and run for the entire 90 minutes.

Sorry but I don’t buy the played out of position excuse when you’ve played as much games as he has and is being paid as much as he is. He and his followers are just looking for excuses for his mediocre performances.

There may well be a hell of a lot of truth in what you say, it may just be that the game on these shores are not set up for Russians / Ukraines ..Rebrov and Shechenko didn’t exactly set the prem alight, the only one who done ok was Kanchelskis, but you cannot get away from the fact that the points you highlight to be his weakness are those required of a midfield man in 2011, Arshavin is not a midfielder and nowhere on his CV does it ever say he has been succesful in that capacity, at Zenit he failed at it, and was moved forward and scored for fun, that was the sole reason the prem clubs all sat up and took notice, it really is bloody unfair to start reeling off the qualities needed to be succesful in the role he is asked to do when few of them are in his locker to start with..especially when Thierry Henry is such a classic example of how much a mans game can be affected by being played in the wrong position..truly amazing that anyone can argue this point it really is..if a genius like Henry can look average being played out of position anyone can !  Arshavin needs an arm around him and he needs to be told to roam in the pocket and do what you like. the reason Arsene Wenger keeps being linked with wingers is because sadly Theo Walcott needs to play in the pocket and I am betting Oxo will need to too if he is to be seen to full effect…whoever is buying these players are giving little thought for the system or the development and confidence of them, Theo would take Wengers arm off if he gave him the central role and so would Arshavin and right now I see RVP needing help and for the life of me I don’t understand why they are not put in there to give RVP a rest when needed.

Yeah ok ..clearly you just don’t rate him, Darren Bent failed miserably at Spurs yet has scored goals everywhere else, it happens for whatever reason it happens but playing him where he is supposed to be more frequently than he has been out of position may have been the answer.

Hmm that’s an interesting comparison, but surely his attitude is sufficient enough to say he’s a loafer and I don’t think the EPL game can afford that kind of player at the top level.

Bent clearly did not fit the style of game the Totts had in mind at the time. There’s no shame in admitting that this just isn’t the place for you. Podolski failed at Bayern but scores for fun at Koln. Mat Hummels was deemed surplus at Bayern and this is when they had scrub Dimichelis as their starting defender, but Hummels has turned into one of the best defenders in the league at Dortmund. Thierry didn’t fit Juventus and turned into the best striker in his prime at Arsenal. Kherzhakov was a bit part striker at Sevilla but has found his place back in Russia scoring every week. The list goes on and on of players who just didn’t fit at one club for whatever reason but turned on the magic at another. It happens, big deal, move on, Arshavin has been at Arsenal for a good 3 and a bit seasons now and we rarely ever see him play like we thought he would consistently. He shows flashes now and then but they’re far too few.

Again this whole notion of out of position is moot. Do it over 100 times and it can no longer be considered to be unnatural – he’s gone 119 appearances now and that’s more than enough time to adapt to the position.
