Time to stick away fans in the Gods, Arsenal

I wrote a piece about people leaving our home games early earlier this week, and it looks like I’m not the only one to notice the lack of support shown in the stadium. This week REDaction held a meeting with AFC representatives before the Carling Cup tie versus Manchester City at Emirates.

The questions about safe standing, ticketing, and unreserved seating posed to the club were unfortunately on the whole dodged by the club. More interestingly I thought was the one of the questions posed about player interaction with the fans.

It was put to the club about the an improvement in post-match appreciation by the players would be appreciated, which was met with a reply saying that the fans must also meet them halfway, which includes staying for the full 90 minutes at home games. Obviously I’m not the only one to notice that other fans are leaving early, the players are clearly noticing too.

How frustrating must it be for a player to be entering the final stages of a match and to look up at the stands for encouragement, only to see thousands of people leaving  the stadium rather than cheering the team on? As I stated in my previous piece, we can be the difference between us drawing 1-1 at home to Fulham and beating them 2-1.

It seems though that most of the dodged questions were around the issue of ticketing, such as the location of the away fans and the potential for unreserved seating for Carling Cup games. I feel that if we could get blocks 5-12 put as unreserved seating for Carling Cup ties this would improve the atmosphere no end.

Those who travel regularly to away games will know we have some of the best away support, all standing, all singing and giving their all for the lads. Take a look on youtube and search for arsenal fans at whatever our last away game was, and you might just be surprised to see just how passionate our fans are.

Unfortunately most people who go to away games are then separated at home games, which contributes to the dire atmosphere we currently have to endure. If we could get 2,000 people who want to stand, sing and stay for the full 90 minutes it might, just might make a real difference to a result.

Away fans positioning was another point raised, which whilst I agree with the sentiment, this should have never been an issue in the first place had the club stuck them in the upper tier from when we moved. How much of a lift must it be to away teams knowing that they will be backed by 3,000 (or however many fans they bring) in the lower tier behind the goal? We should do what Newcastle do and stick them up in the upper tier, as far away as possible from the pitch, and charge them the highest prices to boot. The less away fans in our stadium the better if you ask me.

The dire atmosphere at our new home needs drastic improvement, and isn’t being helped by people wasting a ticket by only attending 75% of the match. Perhaps if you can’t commit to attending the game to the end you shouldn’t be there at all.

Arsenal fan since 1988, and regular at Highbury from 1994 onwards, Now a ST holder in the North Bank Lower at Emirates and regular away follower. Boyhood hero's were Ian Wright and Paul Merson and favourite players from the current crop are Robin van Persie and Jack Wilshire. Best Arsenal moment was being at White Hart Lane when we clinched the title in 2004.

Couldn’t agree more with everything said here. I hate it when I watch others leave. Stay and support your team.

You (And REDaction) raise some interesting points. An unreserved section would be a great idea. I remember as a kid my dad used to meet up and stand with all his mates, while me and my brother would sit behind the hordings with the other kids. The worst of it now is the fact that I now sit infont of some corporate owned seats, normally there are some mindless Essex girls sitting there chatting about makeup (seriously!) sometimes I even get away fans sitting there (normally complete pricks that will cheer there team and goad the home fans, completely against etiquete, which having been in the reverse situation I’ve always adhered to)

As for seating for away fans, I see your point but I’m conflicted about it. We’re the arsenal and we do things the arsenal way. Part of that is respecting our opponents. Although to be fair I got nose bleed seats for the emirates cup a few years ago and the view was still good, so maybe it wouldn’t be too disrespectful to stick them there.

It’s Saturday, it’s match day, this is a Tuesday morning piece, where’s the pre-match? where’s the build -up? where’s the excitement? where’s TGIF?

Completely agree mate. I wondered why NCutd stuck away fans so high up away from pitch. At our stadium we put them behind the goals. At old trafford even there, there is a gap from the pitch to away fans. I am from Aussie and can see the difference on tv. When we drew 4-4 with spurs (yes that game) you could see the spud fans leaving, then delirium when they drew it. I dont want to see them much less hear them, we can at least do something bout seeing them.
    Mon the Arsenal!!!

I dont think you understand the real reason for early departures?
I have a season tkt and oftern leave 5 mins before the end….the reason why is finsbury park. When thousands cram into one train station its quite a difficult journey, especially night games.
Now im all for opinion but suggesting people shouldnt go to games at all based on people leaving a fee minutes early is a little dim.
I pay for my tkt, i love watching arsenal…albeit i leave 5 mins early.

Yet another bulls*** sob story of an excuse from some rich part-timer.  We have the best public transport access of any football club in the country bar none, within walking distance of FIVE tube stations!  Boo-hoo, don’t like being amongst large crowds of people?  Then f*** off and support Blackburn.  People like you are an embarassment to our club and give real fans a bad name!

I agree that fans should stay and players should come and see the fans at the end.  Szcz set a great example, singing with the fans at the end of Wigan. I leave via Highbury and Islington and it isn’t hard. The worst ever, on the busiest evening, is that I’ve had to wait for the second tube!  Alternatively stop for a pint and no waiting!  We can’t complain if the players don’t put in the effort at the end of matches if the supporters aren’t there to support…

I think we need a new Club song. Something better than and more exciting than the awful ‘wonder of you’

If we had an uplifting unique club song that fans contribute to the choosing of, singing in the stadium would increase.

Leaving the game early is disgraceful. Fairweather fans should stay at home. The atmosphere at the ground is a running joke as is the singing – awful twaddle, no noise, no humour, no invention in the songs. A premier league club with third division support. Go to Liverpool, ManU even the grunts of Stoke – Arsenal fans are too busy worrying about missing the tube home to mummy to stay and too befuddled by over-indulgance in latte’s to sing … grow a pair you mincers.

One more thing, i also notice our fans leaving early and that Yo me is the worst part. Doesn’t matter which game it is, they leave. Maybe traffic and avoiding (55k) at same time I dont know and I am not them. Mg dad used to leave early and I would hate it so I would like think to I wouldn’t leave Arsenal.

Also do not forget the tourists. Last time (against Fulham) I was surrounded by lots of tourists in the clock end. They asked me a lot of questions, so I do know they were tourists. Of course it wasn’t only them, but still it affects the atmosphere as well. For long periods of time I felt totally isolated. I solved the problem by taking an extra beer. Ha ha. Then I did not care that I was 1 of the few in the neighboring area, who showed some more passion.I just cannot accept the traffic is difficult argument. I never leave early. Gooner2007 you say you love Arsenal. Then why aren’t you interested in  what’s happening to your team?
